Episode 6: "Shēngxiào"

Congratulations to our Top 12 artists. You've all survived the first cut and will continue to release music under Platinum Records' watchful eye. While we saw some real highlights last episode, second chances will not be awarded to artists who disappoint twice in a row, so if you fail to impress this week, then it may be you packing your bags and searching for a new record label…

After your impressive debuts, we need a follow-up single. Something that's going to connect with people the world over. For this episode, we want you to write songs inspired by the 12 Signs of the Chinese Zodiac and their associated personality traits and characteristics. Everyone falls into one of these categories, so you're automatically appealing to 1/12th of the population! How you are influenced by your assigned zodiac is completely up to you, and the subject matter of your song is also undefined, so long as it relates to the traits or characteristics of your zodiac.

Our social media bloggers have also compiled a reference table to get you on the right track:

Zodiac Animal Birth Years Personality Traits
Rat ...1972, 1984, 1996, 2008... Quick-witted, resourceful, and versatile
Ox ...1973, 1985, 1997, 2009... Decisive, honest, dependable, and hardworking
Tiger ...1974, 1986, 1998, 2010... Brave, competitive, unpredictable, and self-confident
Rabbit ...1975, 1987, 1999, 2011... Gentle, quiet, elegant, and alert; quick, skillful, kind, and patient
Dragon ...1976, 1988, 2000, 2012... Confident, intelligent, ambitious, persevering, and hardworking
Snake ...1977, 1989, 2001, 2013... Intelligent, courageous, confident, insightful, and communicative
Horse ...1978, 1990, 2002, 2014... Animated, kind, straightforward, active, and energetic

Star Challenges

✪ Set your song within one of the years that correspond with your assigned Chinese zodiac sign.

✪ Reference the animal associated with the Chinese zodiac sign you've been assigned in the lyrics of your song.

Due to their success in the previous challenge, TemporalCitrus & Kylie Jenner were allowed to select any of the 12 Signs of the Chinese Zodiac of their choice. Everyone else was randomly assigned one of the remaining nine signs to keep things fair for all in different time zones. If you are really struggling to find inspiration in any of the traits or characteristics of your assigned zodiac, you may swap with another artist, given both parties agree to the swap.

Ugh. This basically demands that I write an empowerment anthem, and those are almost never good lyrically. And Katy already did the “tiger” themed empowerment anthem anyways. :katie:

LOL at 1998 being one of the years, though. I guess I’ll write a song inspired by the bravery of the heroes who fought in the Battel of Hogwarts. :keir:

I don't feel this is necessarily true, but if you were going to go down this angle, probably look to songs more like "Brave" than "Roar" lyrically. Never let fitting the challenge outweigh having great lyrics.

H U M M I N G B I R D

Inspired by: ‘The Hum’

sEaFVjd.png

INTRO
I’m falling deep in these high lows of mine
Creeping up from behind, dark tones of my mind
A restless sleep yet I still dare to dream
Of that caged hummingbird breaking free in flight
High, high, high

 VERSE
Lifeless feelings, hollow shouts ricochet all around
The storm engulfs all my thoughts every second in every crowd
A predator of my psyche it follows every step
A familiar friend ensnaring me in its web
I’m paralysed by static I still try to outrun it
As every heightened biting murmur trips me up again
Everyone plays ignorant, they can’t hear the night roars
These terrors I can’t fight I’m so confused, completely torn
The endless drone drills away at my hope, my will to stay
Yet I still dare to dream that I’ll outrun it someday

 PRE-CHORUS
A flutter within in the darkest night
It unravels in fear, I wait for a sign
That you’re still here yearning for release
Hummingbird - won’t you please return to me?

 CHORUS
And then I heard you first, then I felt you second
And when I saw you third, then I remembered
The song of beauty your wings deliver
It carries me higher than clouds of cinder
In dreams of serenity my mind’s broken free
I fly at quicker speed to higher frequencies
I’m like that hummingbird, I still dare to dream
But when I woke up you flew away from me

 BRIDGE
Futile fantasies dreamt by fools in need
I chase after you towards another dream
From all the chaos, I run away from me
I desert myself, escape reality
Yet it brings me back it always brings me back
The sound of disconnect rumbling in my head
All of my senses are taken over
I lose sight of myself, can’t hear myself think
My sense of identity lost in the mix
Where nothing makes sense and everything just is

 CHORUS
And when I heard you first, when I felt you second
And when I saw you third, then I remembered
The song of beauty your wings delivered
It carried me higher than clouds of cinder
In dreams of serenity my mind broke free
I flew at quicker speed to higher frequencies
I was like that hummingbird, I dared to dream
And when I woke up

 OUTRO
Lifeless feelings, hollow shouts ricochet all around
The storm engulfs all my thoughts every second in every crowd
The endless drone drills away at my hope, my will to stay
Yet I still dare to dream that I’ll outrun it someday
Someday

EXPLANATION
My song this episode is inspired by the phenomenon and unsolved mystery known as ‘The Hum’ which is reported as being “a persistent and invasive low-frequency humming, rumbling, or droning noise not audible to all people.”
Since it is low-frequency” I used that as a metaphor for depression. The fact that the Hum is said to be “not audible to all people” was a perfect representation of depression for me and how complex it is. Also, the Hum is reported as being “persistent and invasive” which is very much like depression and how it is always there, creeping up on you in even the happiest of times.

My song is called “Hummingbird” because, after doing some research, I found that hummingbirds flap their wings “at high frequencies audible to humans” which creates a humming sound. To me the hummingbird is therefore symbolic of hope due to it being on the opposite end of the sound frequency spectrum. This is why the person so desperately wants the hummingbird to return.

Therefore, I decided to explore this concept: depression represented by the low-frequency Hum, with hope represented by the high-frequency flapping of hummingbirds.

In addition, I decided to have the hummingbird only exist in the dreamworld in order to separate - and perhaps juxtapose - the fantastical utopia where the high-frequency hope (hummingbird) resides with the cold reality of the low-frequency depression (The Hum). This is why the hummingbird flies away when the person wakes up.

With my song this week I hoped to illustrate what depression is like, and oftentimes how ruthless and relentless yet covert it can be. This is why I tried to make sure ‘Hummingbird’ was not overly uplifting since that would be an inaccurate truth of the nature of depression. Hopefully, you’ll be able to resonate in some way with the themes explored in my song! <3
