US Airplay Discussion

Perhaps, anyway I'm just arguing based on personal opinion. I don't claim to know how American radio work fully but I do know they move painfully slow.

I'm not advocating for pop radio to play any urban song that is a streaming hit. But just looking at this year, when you look at how pop radio took their time to hop onto obvious pop smashes like DSN, BL, Say So when they're already blowing up on streaming, only to hold onto them for MONTHS long after they have peaked, even cannibalizing the subsequent singles... It's just annoying at this point.

And now because pop radio can't let go of DSN, Physical never even got sent to pop radio. That's the other thing stupid about US radio where it's hard for an artist to have multiple songs (unless you're in your imperial phase like Katy TD era or Taylor 1989 era). DSN must have fully peaked and collapsing before radio can play another Dua song. Or you have instances where labels pull a song off the radio just to make way for the next single. And so because DSN has finally started falling, BMH can rise now. Whereas pretty much in the rest of the world, they're ready for a 4th Dua single already.

And then you have cases like MOM and Intentions where the songs didn't even do amazing on callouts, but somehow gets a push to #1 MONTHS after it has peaked. And how songs like Circles and Sucker were kept on power rotation for 25+ weeks straight :rip: You can't tell me a listener actively wants to listen to these songs for 6 months straight.

Once again, I'm just ranting so ignore me if my argument bears no weight.

I get your point, and I find it annoying to see the same song being played so much for half a year as a chart follower as well. On the other hand, that's what people want to listen at the end of the day. like if people have loved listening Circles, Blinding Lights, Don't Start Now etc. for such a long time, radio had all the right (and duty?) to play them. as for as willing to listen the same song so much for 6 months sounds weird, it is what it is.

And I don't think it's an american thing. UK airplay chart has currently BL at #4 and DSN at #10. and these two songs were smashing the charts since their releases back in November '19, while in the US they took some time to smart smashing. so they are even more overplayed there

I actually think radio should follow callouts way more. Often there are some songs with bad callouts that take weeks to actually peak and freefall. Say So for example hasn't had top notch callouts for a while (they're still good but not enough to have the song so high for such a long time). It should be lower by now (while BL and Adore You are still very much loved and they should rightfully be played). Songs like MOM and Intentions should have never gone #1 too, even if the latter had good sales/streams. yet their label push them for weeks for the #1 and once they reach it they freefall.

I think american radio problem is how slow they are in picking up a song. DSN took quite some time to take off. Before You Go has had great callouts for months but radio started picking it up only recently, when the song is now very old. what was the reason in waiting so much?

Thanks for replying. I agree that if they should really base it off something (callouts, streams or whatever), they should fully commit to it. It's just strange that some songs get pushed very hard despite mediocre callouts, yet when I question pop radio not supporting some other songs, I was told because it has poor callouts.

I'm not sure how long a song takes to debut on callouts, but it shouldn't take that long imo. Correct me if I'm wrong but ROM hasn't debuted on callouts yet right? I mean it was a hit right out of the gate so radio was reasonably on board, but now it's just stuck in an awkward limbo outside top 10 (happened to many other songs previously)... I'm told because it hasn't debuted on callouts so pop radio is hesitant to push it yet, which is strange imo. And IF it does get great callouts, it will probably keep climbing and finally peaking at #1 like 3 months later, when everyone else would be basically done with the song already :rip:

BYG is a very good example. American radio is always so slow and it's frustrating. I notice they are also slow in supporting urban-leaning songs too. I'm not sure how they did on callouts but I'm talking about songs like Roxanne, hot girl bummer and more recently Falling and Blueberry Faygo (idk if they will even support the latter but I'm assuming so).

yeah I agree, they should debut on callouts sooner (ROM should debut this Friday). no idea why they take so much time, especially for a song by two established and very popular artists.

and yeah, watch Bluebbery Faygo be top3 on pop radio in late August (when it's getting great callouts for weeks now )

After using payola for Intentions to get #1, now Scooter used it to push SWU

Do people actually want to be hearing these songs this much though? I know personally when I hear Sucker, Circles, or other massively overplayed songs, I change the station quicker than Stupid Love left the Top 10. :skull: Maybe they need to sample more people in these callouts to get a better picture of what audiences actually want to hear. And on that note, aren't the callouts we see just a very small picture of the full callouts? If I'm right in thinking that, how do we know that what we see as good callouts are actually good overall?

Just trying to figure out why radio slowly continues to because slower and slower in picking up new songs and letting old ones go, because it's gotten WAY out of hand even though I quite like some of the songs that have overstayed their welcome (like Blinding Lights, Don't Start Now, and Say So). Like I was absolutely shocked that Stupid Love and Rain On Me were so high up on radio charts in the UK and Australia just a week or two after release while they were just getting started still here. I know that's the case for lots of big songs, and it always baffles me.

The Bones is at 91M AI and couldn't crack a single week in the T10? Kinda embarrassing :rip: It's a good song but it was obviously radio fueled, and callouts were never better than decent.

ROM continuing to get great updates despite no callouts, and the big stations still haven't dropped its spins. Internal research seems to be good, so I'm hoping callouts will be good, probably this Friday

Is there a way to check station's ranking for each format?

You mean each station's weekly playlist? If so, yes. You just need an AllAccess account (free) and go here. Select "Stations" and then you can choose the format you're looking for. There's gonna be a list of all stations monitored by Mediabase for their charts.
