Pop treats him just fine. God’s Plan is sitting in the top 10. :skull:

Wait, WHAT? treat him like crap? what are you even talking about, he's been scoring hits on Pop Radio for almost a decade. :biblio:

God's Plan has been #1 for 11 weeks and is barely top 5. :lmao: Pop radio is giving him the bare minimum.

Other 10+ week Hot 100 #1's this decade peaks on Pop radio:

We Found Love - 8 weeks #1 on Pop Radio

Hello - 4 weeks #1 on Pop Radio

Shape of You - 9 weeks #1 on Pop Radio

See You Again - 4 weeks #1 on Pop Radio

Closer - 11 weeks #1 on Pop Radio

Blurred Lines - 10 weeks #1 on Pop Radio

Uptown Funk - 6 weeks #1 on Pop Radio

Happy - 4 weeks #1 on Pop Radio

One Dance - 1 week #1 on Pop Radio

God's Plan - 0 weeks #1 on Pop Radio

Pop radio does not give him his deserved treatment in correlation to how popular he is. And once God's Plan peaks its obviously going to be removed from playlists and fall down the chart completely more quickly than those hits.

Camila Cabello gets better treatment at Pop radio than the biggest artist in America right now. That should tell you how out of touch Top 40 radio is even though this discussion has been done 1 million times.

Make Me Nice is also debuting #1 next week, and I bet it will struggle to go top 20 on Pop Radio while songs like Filthy & No Excuses which were dead on arrival AND have bad reception went top 20 with no hesitation.

You replied better than I could. NFW is racing up the AI radio charts now (even before it was officially sent to radio) but it's going to stall around the Top 15 because Pop won't pick up for another  week or two and even then it'll drag its feet. This happens consistently it's just that now Drake has major streams to offset the discrepancy.

Camilla’s core format is Pop radio though. It’s not for Drake, so it’s not too suprising.

Pop stations don’t usually look at Hot 100 positions or even streaming yet to determine what they play

And Top 40's core artists are the most popular artists in the country releasing hugely popular songs. Drake's current singles are not too-offensive for Pop at all, they're doing well on sales & streams, Drake is an established household name, and he's the biggest artist in general currently.

Pop stations definitely do look into what's doing well on charts, wtf?

If they're not paying attention to Hot 100, they're paying attention to iTunes: God's Plan has been #1 in sales 8 weeks

If they're not paying attention to iTunes, they're paying attention to Streaming: God's Plan has been #1 in streams 10 weeks.

We've also literally witnessed radio constantly start rotating songs that haven't gone out for adds yet simply because they're having strong success on charts.

Top 40 as a format has its own set of core artists and Drake just has never been one of them. It’s not about who’s popular on The Hot 100 since that involves popularity beyond pop radio especially with the streaming audience. Two totally different audiences.

That’s why so many songs that go Top 10 on Pop radio don’t have good streaming

Pop radio does take digital sales into consideration, although I think the impact of that is lessening as the digital sales market is dying. That’s why you see a song like Meghans Trainor’s  new song doing decently well on sales but still struggling on Pop radio. The market isn’t as competitive anymore so good sales mean less for pop radio than it did a few years

But even pop radio including digital sales in their decision process took time. They didn’t in the early years of digital sales. Then they found out the audiences were similar enough for it to be relevant. The streaming audience is so different from the pop audience that it makes sense that they’re not really considering it yet. And they even  mention in this Billboard podcast that pop radio doesn’t really look at streams

Yeah, that’s the issue.

Drake is the the biggest artist in the 13-30 demo, which is Top 40’s demo audience.

And Meghan has been doing worse on iTunes than Pop radio. They’re still pushing the song despite being dead on arrival was the point.

50 Cent, Nelly, TI, Kanye, Eminem, Usher, Boyz II Men, etc have all been Pop Radio staples at some point. There is literally no way you could argue Drake doesn’t capture the same demo they did. Which is why it makes no sense as to how Drake performs on Pop radio and stubbornness is the only reason at play

This is true. Big Rap hits like Without Me, Lose Yourself, Hot In Herre, Dilemma, Shake Ya Tailfeather, Over and Over, In da club, Hey Ya, The Way You Move, Gold Digger, Stronger, Live Your Life were #1's in Pop Radio in the 00's. It's weird that random songs by NF & G-Eazy (Him & I) are getting more support than Drake.

Ppl complaining drake isn’t #1 on pop? Really? Myself I dislike rap a lot and I change stations everytime a rap-ish song comes on. So do many radio listeners. It’s not that deep.

Drake does have pop appeal and is widely known but his music isn’t necessarily the type of pop song to be played on pop. He’s got rhythmic and urban radio for rap fans. The fact he always manages to go top 10 on pop shows he’s not being treated poorly. It’s the same logic the other way around: nobody ever complained Havana was never played on urban, despite how big the song is and Young Thug’s feature.

I mean the argument is how out of touch T40 is, not necessarily “Drake’s not #1 omg!1”. It’s just an example. You can use a different song of a different genre too. No one’s expecting Kodak Black or Gucci to have 5 Pop #1s or anything.

Havana being played on Urban makes no sense. T40 is the most diverse format, with the largest reach, yet its stagnant on songs America is not showing interest in. And is controlled by heavy stations that are at the hands of the labels. Why can G-Eazy’s rap song top pop and not the biggest single of 2018? They’re both rap songs. Urban/rhythmic are at a disadvantage audience impression wise as well, so putting them down is interesting. And liking God’s Plan doesn’t simply make you a “rap fan”. It’s spent 12 weeks at #1, broke multiple streaming records and still near the apex of all formats. Clearly its reach is beyond “rap fans” and should be shown accordingly.

I don't know why it is so hard to understand? I'm an avid pop radio listener and I would change the station immediately if they dared to play Gucci Gang, 6nine or any other mumble rap ****. :skull:

In the 2000s during the urban dominance Top 40 radio embraced a lot of Hip-hop/R&B songs because these had wide appeal (and tbh were GOOD songs), the streaming crowd mostly white male teenagers cannot take over Pop radio.

God's Plan is doing well and it's gonna be a top 5 (possibly top 3) hit, One Dance was way bigger because it was poppier and pop radio has not paid dust to Drake, that's definitely a lie/fake news.

The main demo for pop is usually more like 18-34 and they’re usually women and often white, so it’s not going to be the same as the main streaming demographic

And none of those rappers are core pop artists either. They’re way more way successful on the urban/rhythmic formats than Pop.

Also, Drake has had more hits on pop radio than Kanye, TI, and 50 Cent. So the amount of pop airplay they received was sufficient then there should be no complaints about Drake

You can’t compare those songs to God’s Plan :deadbanana: All of those are very pop influenced or have  hooky choruses.

Songs like Let You Doen by NF fit into that category of the songs you mentioned. When Drake releases a song like that then that will be something else. But he doesn’t release songs with that much pop influence/big hooks like the NF songs and the other songs you mentioned

God’s Plan has neither element. The fact that it has gotten this far already on Pop radio really shows Pop support but to be unsatisfied until it hits #1 on Pop radio is being greedy since it’s not the type of song that fits the format in the first place :rip:

Exactly, we’re talking about two completely different demographics here. And yeah the rap hits of the 00s were way more pop influenced/hooky so they did better

Yeah, One Dance and Hotline Bling did better on pop radio cause they were poppier and hookier. It’s not hard to understand there’s no vendetta against Drake on pop radio :rip:

If anything they are being very supportive given that the song doesn’t really fit the format musically. It could have been worse and the song could have not even gone Top 10 like Humble or Bad and Boujee or Bodak Yellow. So a #3 peak is nothing to get angry about :skull:

I’m not sure if it’s just me or I think it’s pretty obvious and logical why drake gets bad treatment on pop, it happens to plenty of rappers not just him either. His music has never been top 40 type and the songs that are more that lane like one dance do better there.

Its literally the SAME thing as like urban not playing pop songs or country not playing heavy metal.

Havana is NOT an Urban song simply because it has a Rapper (maybe you shouldn’t even be joining the discussion if you don’t know what Urban music is). So no, that comparison is invalid.

Top 40 is not supposed to play purely Pop music. It's suppose to play a mix of whats popular.

No we shouldn’t — that makes no sense.

Urban and Rhythmic play a certain genre of music, R&B and Hip-Hop.

Just as nobody is complaining that Drake isn’t charting on HAC & AC while Pop artists dominate that section — because they play a certain genre that is completely not meant for Drake’s music.

Top 40 however is meant to play a spread of genres. The similarity between the music is that it’s popular music for the general crowd. Drake is the biggest artist in the country, and has a 11 week #1 hit. Obviously it should be at the top of Top 40 Radio if they’re supposed to be playing popular music.

Honestly are you just trying to say only black people listen to a Drake and he has no place on Pop radio?

Because white women aged 18-34 eat up his music. You would find a 21 year old white female who listens to Drake frequently before you find one that listens to Camila Cabello and Meghan Trainor.

Views was the biggest album of 2016, and he looks to have the biggest album of 2018. You don’t get the huge crossover widespread appeal Drake has without also connecting with the white audience largely.

There’s a reason God’s Plan spent 8 weeks at #1 in sales. Do you think black people are heavily using iTunes more than white people? Especially in 2018? He clearly has a huge connect with the  white audience. And just as you guys say those under aged 18 mostly use Streaming; therefore his huge power on iTunes is from the demographic ages 18-34.

All of those artists each did much better on Drake at Top 40 during their peak, despite him having just as much appeal. That’s the issue.

And Drake has more hits total than Kanye/TI/50 on Pop because his career has been successful longer; however his biggest single peaks on Pop are smaller than theirs despite the larger career. Again, that’s the issue.

Can't understand that either. Forbes literally called God's Plan an "escapist pop smash listeners need right now", "with digestible hooks" and "extremely catchy track" from "a good guy who excels at writing escapist, candy-coated pop-rap anthems" :deadbanana4:

Why wouldn't pop radio play a pop song -- especially one that has been a huge smash from the start and from someone of the likes of Drake? :deadbanana4:
