I really don't think that we will see anymore Diamond certifications for songs released after Uptown Funk, See You Again, and The Hills. The only exception might be Hello, which has just under 5 M in sales and a lot of streaming. Closer (8XP eligible though just 7XP) Shape Of You, and Despacito seem to indicate that 8XP is the new singles certification ceiling.

Despacito is eligible for Diamond though. With youtube streams it is now significantly over 10M units.

I had thought so too when they submitted Despacito for certification late last fall. But the RIAA only gave Despacito at 8XP. Frankly, I was stunned, as from the information we had it was just a very few streams and/or sales away from Diamond more than a month before the 8XP. Could the RIAA be only counting the Bieber remix as Despacito's certification?

I'm glad to see that Three Days Grace's label got around to certifying the band's albums and singles.

As for Katy Perry, why did the label update her singles certs but not her albums? One Of The Boys and Prism probably at least 3×P, and Teenage Dream is over 8×P.

I actually think we might see more songs getting certified Diamond now that streaming is going strong. Of course not a lot but I can see at least two songs being big enough for it to be Diamond every year

Shape Of You has a decent chance of going Diamond. Closer might be close too. But, as someone mentioned on a thread earlier in the week, with virtually every song going at least Gold, certifications aren't nearly as prestigious as they once were.

Yeah. I'm old enough to remember in the physical single days. what a HUGE deal it was for a song to go multi-platinum. Double Platinum was big, Triple Platinum was even more remarkable, and Quadruple Platinum signified you had one of the biggest songs of all time. OF course, the only song to go Diamond prior to ITunes and ODS was CITW 97.

I didn’t know about that but I can see it haha. But yeah, I think more songs will get closer and eventually hit Diamond nowadays

I think Prism is around 4x Platinum at least based on the singles certifications:

Roar 10x Platinum

Dark Horse 10x Platinum

Unconditionally  2x Platinum

Birthday Platinum

This is how we do Platinum

1,7 million pure sales + 2,4 million SPS (based on the certifications of the singles alone) = 4.1 million (4x Platinum).

What I can't understand is why with the RIAA will include streams in certification totals, but not the sales of physical singles. The RIAA combines physical and digital albums, so singles shouldn't be different.

Even if the RIAA only counts each physical single as once (despite the world charts doubling physical singles as twice), songs like I Will Always Love You would be 7×P instead of "just" earning 4×P. Of course, Houston's 4×P was the first of the SS era. We Are The World went 4×P when the level for Platinum was 2 M copies, meaning it sold 8 M in 1985.

Thank you. I knew her albums were under certified. ☺

Really?  :jonny2:

In cases like this they should re-certify old singles according to their new rules. For example We are the world should be 8x Platinum at least based on sales alone.

I agree with you about including physical and digital singles sales in just one certification.

For example "You're still the one" has 2 certifications according to the RIAA: Platinum physical and 2x Platinum digital.

Yeah I don’t understand it either. It’s sad that a lot of songs before 2010 doesn’t even have a certification in the US even though they are obviously big. It should change.

Wait how do you do this? Like knowing the certs of the album based on the singles? I wanna do that too!

Total of the singles certifications of the album / 10

For example for Prism: 24x Platinum singles certifications = 24.000.000 / 10 = 2.400.000 + 1.700.000 (pure sales of the album) = 4.100.000

But this only gives you an idea because we don't know the SPS of the rest of the album tracks and not all their artists have their singles certifications updated.

Oh I see. But for example Camila has only Havana certified 3x Plat and the album has sold 86k pure copies, and that is still not enough for Gold, and the album is certified Gold. Unless the weekly SPS count in that case idk how much has Camila sold with SPS (i only know it did 119k first week)

The streams for all album tracks divided by 1500 are also counted

For certifications they also count shipments and I'm sure Camila's label already shipped more than 200k copies in the US, even when she hasn't sold them yet.

For example Reputation's SPS is around 2,5 million and it's already certified 3x Platinum since December (that certification counts shipments that still haven't been sold yet).

Also like MTrain Grande said the SPS of the rest of the album tracks are counted too.

So then I guess Prism can be more than 4x Platinum certified since album track streams also count.
