  5. Released just one year after Like a Prayer, I'm Breathless was released May 22nd, 1990 and included 12 brand new tracks, with three of them being featured in the movie Dick Tracy. The lead single off the album, Vogue, became a smash hit selling 2 million copies by the end of 1990 in the United States alone. The second single, a jazz song about spanking titled "Hanky Panky" was another top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 for Madonna. The album itself was a huge hit peaking at number 2 on the Billboard 200 for three weeks and spent a total of 13 weeks in the top 10 alone. The album was quickly replaced on the charts by The Immaculate Collection, which was released a mere five months later and featured Vogue. The album has sold around 3 million copies in the United States to date. This leads to my question, do you consider I'm Breathless to be Madonna's fifth studio album or do you consider it a Soundtrack to Dick Tracy? The album is subtitled to be "inspired" by the movie, hence the albums title "I'm Breathless" (the name of Madonna's character). However, many other albums are more like traditional soundtracks but are still considered studio albums. Examples are Prince's Purple Rain and Mariah Carey's Glitter. It seems like today, I'm Breathless is not considered a studio album, but features more songs that are not featured in the movie than these albums do. Also, if you read articles dating back to the 90s, I'm Breathless is often referred to as a studio album, and not a soundtrack. Even this 1994 press release of Bedtime Stories refers to it as her 7th studio album, not her 6th. What do you consider it?

    Golden Hour vs Deeper Well

Golden Hour was what got me into Kacey Musgraves and is still one of the best-produced albums I have ever heard, but there was always a few tracks I never clicked with. When I first heard Deeper Well earlier this year I was underwhelmed but it has massively grown on me, and at this point I think overall it stands toe-to-toe with Golden Hour (though that album's highs remain untouchable). What do you think? Cardinal VS Slow Burn Deeper Well VS Lonely Weekend Too Good to be True VS Butterflies Moving Out VS Oh, What a World Giver / Taker VS Mother Sway VS Love Is a Wild Thing Dinner with Friends VS Space Cowboy Heart of the Woods VS Happy & Sad Jade Green VS Velvet Elvis The Architect VS Wonder Woman Lonely Millionaire VS High Horse Heaven Is VS Golden Hour Anime Eyes VS Rainbow

  13. When it comes to making children's music, two pop stars come to mind: Katy Perry and Taylor Swift. For Katy Perry, the seeds were planted with her debut, One of the Boys, but the turning point was Teenage Dream which saw her sport colorful wigs, beach and candy-themed visuals, among others. That image stays true today. Her recent Las Vegas residency, Play, sees her in her own fantasy land, wearing outlandish kid-friendly costumes and singing sugary sweet numbers from her catalog. However, despite this, Katy Perry still manages to be sexy and it doesn't come off tacky. Her sense of humor and confidence sells the image she's trying to portray. For Taylor Swift, being childish has always been in her DNA. From her debut up to her latest album, she manages to make music fit for children—even with the occasional cursing (for the teenagers who think doing so makes them sound cool and edgy). Admittedly, she has taken breaks from making kid-friendly songs, such as in the albums Reputation, Folklore and Evermore. But those breaks are very short-lived and those more artistic endeavors are often undermined by her propensity to write songs for the lowest common denominator. Can't knock the hustle. I would too if I was making the same kind of money. In your opinion, who did it better? Katy or Taylor?

Does Taylor have the biggest peak of all time?

For years stans and haters alike acknowledged that Taylor's biggest accomplishment was her remarkable consistency. After Taylor's astonishing 2023 (the biggest tour of all time, largest music consumption year ever, Time's Person of the Year, and a shocking amount of media attention), many began to think Taylor's peak might also be the biggest of all time outright. This morning, Taylor's TTPD debuted with over 100 million more streams than the previous all-time record holder (her own Midnights). The album is expected to debut with numbers thought to be literally impossible just a few years ago because of music industry transitions. Next month, Taylor restarts the largest tour in history and will surely clench a new collection of all-time records in the coming weeks. She is doing this well into her 30s, bucking traditional career trajectories. Has Taylor successfully achieved the largest single peak ever? If not her, who?

  21. Let me preface by saying I like a lot of the album. However, it's not fully clicking w me and I couldn't figure out why. Then I realized this was literally the album I was asking for after Folklore + Evermore, and I was so disappointed that Midnights was a return to the pop sound when it first came out (although now I'm liking it better than TTPD bc I'm used to it. When Midnights first released, I even swapped in the orchestral and acoustic versions of songs, to make it more stripped down and Folklorevermore sounding). If TTPD had come out right after Folklorevermore (and then we had gotten SNTV, 1989TV, and Midnights now) would this album be more palatable?

Two giants, two massive albums... Which one takes the crown?
  23. In the months leading up to the release of Ariana Grande's seventh studio album, Eternal Sunshine, she was plagued by controversy surrounding her relationship with Ethan Slater (SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical). However, the album was very well-received and is continuing to perform well commercially a month on. It also feels like much of the online vitriol towards her has faded away since its release. So, did Eternal Sunshine redeem Ariana Grande in the eyes of the GP after Spongegate, or was the scandal never as big a deal as ATRL made it seem? Discuss.
