Song and Record of the Year: 2014

Gotye easily retained his Record of the Year win for “Somebody That I Used To Know (feat. Kimbra)” in our 2013 poll, while Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe” unsurprisingly took home the Song of the Year category with nearly half of the vote. In 2014, the Recording Academy nominated a bunch of hit songs from mostly unusual hitmakers. Daft Punk won Record of the Year for “Get Lucky (feat. Pharrell Williams and Nile Rodgers)” while Lorde took home Song of the Year for her breakthrough smash “Royals.” Vote now!

Song and Record of the Year: 2013

Adele easily retained her “Rolling in the Deep” wins in the 2012 poll, securing more than 65% of the vote in both categories. In 2013, the Grammys obviously jumped at the chance to nominate a bunch of indie songs that were genuine smashes. Gotye took home Record of the Year for “Somebody That I Used to Know.” He wasn’t eligible for Song of the Year, though, so that went home with Jack Antonoff and friends for “We Are Young.” But pop stars still had a strong showing in the field—none “Stronger” than Kelly Clarkson with her first general field nomination. Carly Rae Jepsen called us, maybe, but the Grammy voters didn’t call her back. Ed Sheeran made “The A Team” with his debut single (and still career-best song), and Taylor Swift suspiciously expanded the Record lineup to six nominees with her first Max Martin collaboration... like ever. (Gotye called WANEGOD the best nominee, proving that some indie dudes contain multitudes [not Jake Gyllenhaal]). Vote for your winners and rank the nominees below!

    Glory vs. Revival

  22. Do you find a lyrical masterpiece or vocal intricacy more impressive? I’m going to use these 2 artists as an example because they are known as being experts at each. [Bridge] Well, maybe we got lost in translation Maybe I asked for too much But maybe this thing was a masterpiece 'Til you tore it all up Running scared, I was there I remember it all too well And you call me up again Just to break me like a promise So casually cruel in the name of being honest I'm a crumpled up piece of paper lying here 'Cause I remember it all, all, all Too well [Verse 4] Time won't fly, it's like I'm paralyzed by it I'd like to be my old self again, but I'm still trying to find it After plaid shirt days and nights when you made me your own Now, you mail back my things and I walk home alone But you keep my old scarf from that very first week 'Cause it reminds you of innocence and it smells like me You can't get rid of it 'Cause you remember it all too well, yeah To kiss in cars and downtown bars Was all we needed You drew stars around my scars But now I'm bleedin' 'Cause I knew you Steppin' on the last train Marked me like a bloodstain, I I knew you Tried to change the ending Peter losing Wendy, I I knew you Leavin' like a father Running like water, I And when you are young, they assume you know nothing But I knew you'd linger like a tattoo kiss I knew you'd haunt all of my what-ifs The smell of smoke would hang around this long 'Cause I knew everything when I was young I knew I'd curse you for the longest time Chasin' shadows in the grocery line I knew you'd miss me once the thrill expired And you'd be standin' in my front porch light And I knew you'd come back to me You'd come back to me And you'd come back to me And you'd come back And when I felt like I was an old cardigan Under someone's bed You put me on and said I was your favorite VS

Song and Record of the Year: 2011

Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face” emerged as the early frontrunner in both categories in our 2010 poll, and easily managed to sweep the Record of the Year category; she ultimately finished with twice the votes of Beyoncé and Taylor Swift—combined. “You Belong With Me” did put up a much more valiant fight in the Song of the Year poll, trailing by only a few meager votes until swifties woke up on Christmas day and apparently decided that winning this poll was more important than spending time with their families. Gaga picked up a few more votes as well, but not enough to stop Taylor from taking home the prize. Bad Romance. Dancing On My Own. Teenage Dream. Whataya Want From Me. Only Girl (In The World). Just the Way You Are. California Gurls. The Only Exception. Many iconic pop hits earned nominations at the 2011 Grammys—just not in the top categories. Instead, the academy favored pop-rap collaborations and country-folk ballads in this year’s categories. Both awards went home with Lady A for their drunken booty call anthem “Need You Now.” What will ATRL make of that? Vote now and rank your faves in the comments!
