  1. Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' Extends Reign as Highest Certified Album in U.S. History Doug Morris, Rob Stringer, John Branca, Richard Story, L.A. Reid and Karen Langford. Michael Jackson’s blockbuster album Thriller just keeps on getting bigger. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has certified the set at 33-times platinum in the U.S., extending Thriller’s record as the highest certified album in history. That means Thriller -- released in 1982 -- has earned 33 million equivalent album units in the U.S. That sum blends traditional album sales (one album sale equals one unit), tracks sold from an album (10 tracks sold equals one unit) and on-demand audio and/or video streams (1,500 streams equals one unit). A plaque commemorating the milestone was presented at the home of Epic Records chairman Antonio "L.A." Reid over Grammy weekend, where Sony Music CEO Doug Morris, Columbia Records chairman and incoming Sony Music CEO Rob Stringer, Sony president, commercial group Richard Story, attorneys Karen Langford and John Branca toasted the certification. The RIAA revamped its Gold & Platinum Awards Program on Feb. 1, 2016, growing from a pure album sales certification process to one that includes tracks and streams. That same day, Thriller’s certification was raised from 30 million to 32 million. Thriller continues to maintain its place as the highest-certified album ever, ahead of Eagles’ Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975, with 29 million (It was last certified on Jan. 30, 2006.) Simultaneous with Thriller’s raised certification, its follow-up, Bad, climbs to 10-times platinum (the RIAA’s Diamond award). Jackson is one of just 22 acts with more than one Diamond-certified album. 2. PRINCE: ROYALLY AWESOME STREAMING NUMBERS The long-awaited release of the Prince catalog on all on-demand streaming services bore immediate fruit, according to info from BuzzAngle Music. The first two days the music was available (2/12 and 2/13), Prince songs were streamed 5.9 million times. Previously exclusive to Tidal, the across-the-board availability of Prince’s music resulted in astronomical increases. The last time Prince received more than 5 million streams was on April 29, 2016, just weeks after his death. This was just the second time in the past six months when more than 1 million Prince tracks were streamed. Total streaming activity on Prince albums increased 5,578 % compared to the previous five days. During those first two days, Purple Rain was the most streamed album (1,535,608 streams), followed by 1999 (701,153 total streams). “Let’s Go Crazy” was the most streamed song (339, 748 streams). In related news, Jim Lidestri knows what it sounds like when doves cry. http://hitsdailydouble.com/news&id=305003 Glad they realize that Tidal alone doesn't pay the bills
  3. Michael Jackson's Thriller has become the first album certified 33x Diamond for United States sales and streams. Thinking about how to redecorate the offices to fit the new artwork are, from left, Sony Music CEO Doug Morris, Columbia Records Chairman & CEO Rob Stringer, Estate Co-Executor John Branca, Commercial Music Group President Richard Story, Epic RecordsChairman & CEO L.A. Reid and the Jackson Estate’s Karen Langford. Alternative fact: Doug Morris scored higher than Rob Stringer at Sony’s annual “Moonwalk” competition. http://hitsdailydouble.com/news&id=304993 Dang
  4. What are some songs that could have gone #1? STATE ACTUAL FACTS! So don't say "oh Monster would have for sure been a smash but it was not released as a single Some examples: No Doubt's Don't Speak: #1 on radio for 16 weeks, but couldn't chart on the Hot 100 because there was no physical release Madonna's Into the Groove: overshadowed the #5 peaking "Angel." The song was not issued as a 7" single so did not chart. It was the B-Side to the Angel 12' single. At the time however 12" singles did not count towards the Hot 100 (until 1987). Angel could have peaked higher if the 12" sales were included. The 12' was the first 12" to be certified GOLD in the usa (and at the time, if a single went gold that meant a million copies)
  5. Lovers who plan to celebrate Valentine’s Day with some music in the bedroom have voted — they do it to Rihanna. Leading streaming service Spotify marked the holiday of love Tuesday by analyzing playlists described by users as songs for making love. The top choice was Rihanna’s “Sex With Me,” a track off her latest album “Anti” in which the sultry singer boasts of her prowess. 18. After selling 25,000 copies this week, the total in pure sales is 5,401,000. I believe it's Justin's second highest selling album after My World. 2.0. Super impressive considering the stats of Under the Mistletoe/Believe/Journals combined with the current sales climate. I think he can push 6 million copies by the end of the year
