  2. CHART FINAL: MIDNIGHTS' MASSIVE WEEK Taylor Swift records the biggest debut of her career with her 10th studio album, Midnights (Republic). The record-breaking LP opens with 1.53m on the HITS Top 50, earning the biggest bow of the year, and biggest since Adele’s 25 in 2015. Midnights’ milestones include selling the most vinyl units ever in one week (around 500k) and becoming the most streamed album in a week by a female artist—surpassing Ariana Grande’s thank u, next—with an estimated 540m+ audio and video streams. It's given Swift her biggest-ever first week; it’s earned more streams than any other album by a female artist; and it's responsible for more vinyl-album sales in a single week than any other title in the modern chart era. Still, the question remains: How big will its first-week total be? On Tuesday, we projected 1.46m+, but it’s trended a little better than we expected. Will it hit 1.5m? More? We'll have the final figure on the HITS Top 50 later today; keep refreshing! [Update since Page 56] Taylor Swift’s ‘Midnights’ Has Already Sold 1 Million Albums in the U.S. UPDATE (Oct. 26): According to initial reports to Luminate, the album, which was released on Oct. 21, has earned more than 1.4 million equivalent album units in the U.S. through its first five days of release (through Oct. 25). Of that sum, traditional album sales comprise more than 1.05 million across all available formats (multiple digital album download, CD, vinyl and cassette variants). Vinyl LP sales for the title have surpassed 515,000. Plus, the album’s 20 tracks (the standard set’s 13 tracks plus seven tracks added to a deluxe edition) have registered more than 423 million on-demand official streams (audio and video combined) in the U.S. in the album’s first five days. As reported on Oct. 25, Midnights has the largest streaming week for an album in 2022, by total streams for its collected songs. It is also the largest streaming week ever for an album by a non-R&B/hip-hop title, or for any album by a female artist. In its first five days, Midnights has the fifth-most streams in a single week by an album ever. The largest streaming week was registered by the opening frame of Drake’s Scorpion, with 745.92 million (July 14, 2018-dated chart). PREVIOUSLY (Oct. 25): According to initial reports to Luminate, the album, which was released on Oct. 21, has earned more than 1.3 million equivalent album units in the U.S. through its first four days of release (through Oct. 24). Of that sum, traditional album sales comprise more than 1 million across all available formats (multiple digital album download, CD, vinyl and cassette variants). Vinyl LP sales for the title have surpassed 500,000. In terms of albums by female artists, Midnights surpasses the debut week of Ariana Grande’s Thank U, Next (it launched with 307.07 million streams for its collected songs on the chart dated Feb. 23, 2019). [Update since Page 51] A TAILORED TOP 20 Taylor Swift achieves the fifth million-selling first week of her career with the debut of Midnights (Republic). She not only sets the record for the most first-week streams by a female artist—which is about 500m besting Ariana Grande’s 307m for Thank U, Next—but she also becomes the first artist to surpass 1m since ticket/merch bundles were disallowed on the charts. The last album to open north of 1m was Swift’s Reputation (Republic) in November 2017 with 1.24m. [Update since Page 50] [Billboard Oct 24th Update] According to initial reports to Luminate, the album, which was released on Oct. 21, has earned more than 1.2 million equivalent album units in the U.S. through its first three days of release (through Oct. 23). Of that sum, traditional album sales comprise more than 955,000 across all available formats (multiple digital album download, CD, vinyl and cassette variants). Vinyl LP sales for the title is nearing 500,000. [Update since Page 45] NEW RELEASE: SWIFT VICTORY Taylor Swift’s Midnights (Republic) is headed for a huge bow. A full-week total in the 1.4m-1.6m range makes Midnights the first album to debut at or past the million mark in the post-bundling era. The album has already destroyed the one-week vinyl sales record that Harry Styles set earlier this year. In only its first two days of release, Midnights is fast approaching 500k in vinyl albums alone. That more than doubles the 182k of Styles’ Harry’s House (Columbia) in May. [Update since Page 36] Taylor Swift’s ‘Midnights’ Off to Record-Breaking Start in U.S. According to initial reports to Luminate, the album, which was released on Oct. 21, has sold more than 800,000 copies in the U.S. through its first day across all available formats (multiple digital album download, CD, vinyl and cassette variants). It has already logged the largest sales week for any album since 2017, is the top-selling album of 2022 year-to-date, and has set a modern-era record for single-week vinyl album sales. Further, Midnights handily breaks the modern-era record for single-week vinyl album sales in the U.S., with over 400,000 copies sold so far. That’s the largest week for an album on vinyl since Luminate began tracking music sales in 1991. It surpasses the previous high, set earlier this year, when Harry’s House debuted with 182,000 vinyl copies (week ending May 26, 2021). [Update since Page 22] ONE-DAYS: SWIFT VICTORY Taylor Swift’s Midnights (Republic) is headed for a huge bow. First-day sales and streams suggest a full-week total in the 1m-1.2m range as Midnights is set to become the first album to debut at or past the million mark in the post-bundling era. This will be Tay's fifth album to debut north of 1m. Full-week streaming projections are now close to 500m and could increase thanks to her 3AM version of Midnights, which includes seven tracks that are unavailable on any of the set's physical versions. Meanwhile, as we've noted, Spotify confirms that Tay has broken the first-day record for streams of an album, with 88m U.S. and 185m worldwide. She's also busted first-day records at Apple Music and Amazon Music. [Update since Page 11] CLOCKIN' AFTER MIDNIGHTS: IS TAY ABOUT TO BREAK SOME RECORDS? We have only overnight numbers to pore over, but having hauled out the ol’ abacus, we believe Taylor Swift’s brand-new Republic release, Midnights, may well be on the way to breaking at least two key first-week records: Adele’s post-bundling-era bow of 839k for 30 and Harry Styles’ 182k in vinyl sales for Harry’s House (that set’s first-week total activity was 521k, giving him the biggest debut of 2022 so far). We’re still counting on our fingers and toes, but we’re pretty sure Tay can blow past these benchmarks on her way to a stunning first-week total. We’re not quite ready to predict what that number will be, but for now, just set up your Midnights souvenir clock; we’ll keep you posted.

  17. TOP 20: LIL BABY GOES BIG Quality Control/Motown’s Lil Baby lands on top of this week’s HITS Top 50 as It’s Only Me tracks to first-week activity of over 200k. Red Hot Chili Peppers look solid at #3 with Return of the Dream Canteen (Warner), the band’s second release of 2022. The album is projected to collect north of 60k in activity and will open with the largest pure-sales total of the week. Meanwhile, Bailey Zimmerman’s Leave the Light On (Warner Nashville) and The 1975’s Being Funny in a Foreign Language (Dirty Hit) will also debut in the Top 10, at #8 and #10, respectively. Backstreet Boys’ new Christmas album, A Very Backstreet Christmas (BMG), starts off in the Top 15, suggesting this may be the holiday title to watch this year.
