    Say So >>>> Super Bass

I never understood the appeal of Super Bass as someone who does love bubblegum pop it was a bit too sweet for me and kinda boring. Nicki had better pop-rap songs. Say So is pop-rap done right

    Ariana Grande: What went right?

Many new female artists achieve massive success with a string of huge hits and successful eras, but by their third album, they often start to underperform or struggle to connect with the general public. The last true breakout star was Ariana Grande. Despite some questionable choices, her hits are incredibly memorable, and she has built a strong identity. Even after multiple eras, she continues to sell records, produce hits, and resonate with the masses. What went right for Ariana Grande, and what is the secret to her success? Could new artists replicate this formula and achieve the same results?
  3. When you stream music, is it always because you truly feel like listening to the song/album for the art because it moves you? Do you ever stream just because you want to increase your fave's stats? What about during chart battles? Do you give one artist streams because you want to see them on top? For example, did you stream Billie or Taylor because you wanted one of them to be #1? Did you want to fight the other stan base?
  4. There's no way in hell this should've been a single in early 2014 and without a music video. Jump would've fared better if it was buzz / promotional single shortly after it was recorded back in 2012.
  5. As we know, Katy Perry was on a massive career high from 2010 to 2014, a period of time in which she racked up numerous #1 singles & albums and smashed records left and right. At the time, Taylor was just beginning to veer into pop music, having released Red in 2012 (her first pop-leaning record) and 1989 in 2014, the first album where she went "full pop." After the latter singles from Prism failed to make as much of an impact on the charts as the prior Teenage Dream singles did, Katy began to spiral, going so far as to chop off half her hair, giving her a more butch, Ellen DeGeneres-influenced aesthetic, which sent the gays running for the hills. After releasing multiple flop singles in a row (Chained to Prism, Boner Petit, Swift Swift), she finally dropped her 5th studio album, titled Whiteness. Although the album did have a decent chart position initially, it didn't have nearly as much longevity as Teenage Dream did, leading many to call it a "flop." But let's re-imagine history for a moment. What if Witness had had the same levels of success as Teenage Dream (several back-to-back #1 singles + high album sales + chart longevity). If that had happened, do you think Taylor still would have extended an olive branch to Katy in 2019, when she pity-invited her to join the You Need to Calm Down music video? Discuss, and keep it Kyoto

    Can Radical Optimism still rebound?

What would it take for it to rebound?
  8. Often looked over in such a huge and diverse career, Madonna's cover of 'American Pie' is almost the perfect Madonna song, even with it being a cover. It's almost as the track was made for her, with lyrics like "and I knew that if I had my chance, I could make those people dance, and maybe they'd be happy for awhile..." sets out Madonna's ability to capture people's attention, forget their troubles for an hour or two, and make them dance and sing (get up and do your thing). Also the visuals in the video perfectly capture American life circa 1999/2000. Agree?
  9. I always thought Gaga could make an epic main theme for a Bond movie. BUUUUT, Lately, with all the hype around the Joker and Aaron Taylor-Johnson being the next 007, it also occurred to me that Gaga could play a sexy villain trying to take over the world. Could she do both? Has that ever happened? Something like this would fit her voice like a glove
  10. Do you think music videos still play a role in an album cycle's longevity? Is this the reason Cowboy Carter feels like a dead era already? What are your thoughts?

    Your fave's cancelled/scrapped singles ?

What are your fave's album tracks that were supposed to become singles... but were replaced by another track, or simply scrapped ? My fave has quite a few, so I'm assuming other pop girls/boys have a few as well, and I'm intrigued! Post them in this thread
  12. What was your initial reaction to Xtina's "Not Myself Tonight" music video? I know at the time of release, it was polarizing. My initial reaction? - I have to STAN this *****!! (been stanning ever since) These two guys couldn't handle the heat/ending: POST YOUR GIF REACTION BELOW (& PURCHASE BIONIC WITH YOU'RE AT IT)!!

Was Aaliyah the coolest singer ever?

Her style was immaculate. Her swagger was unmatched. Her brand of futuristic R&B still sounds fresh to this day. I can't think of anyone who irradiates "cool" quite like she did.
  14. Imagine Dragon

Is this the best song of Ava Max?

Tove Lo snapped on this one I fear. Deserved to be a single, it would have smashed.
  15. Give her her flowers. This was ahead of its time. Next time at a club/bar I will have them play this!
  16. Shorter songs are often associated with the streaming era and gen z artists, but I was surprised to discover The Beatles didn't release a song over 3 minutes long until their 5th album Multiple songs on their albums are even less than 2 minutes long. For reference this is the tracklist of their debut album: Thoughts?
  17. Eternal Sunshine sounds very Mariah-esque, particularly bridge. The vocal effect is reminiscent of Faded. Won't break, can't shake This fate, rewrite Deep breaths, tight chest Life, death, rewind
  18. Welcome to the 2nd thread of the 3-part series 'Radical Optimism: The Tankage', where we shall be covering the promotion rollouts of each single of the era as they evaporate, vaporize and TBA off the Spotify charts one by one! The final thread of the series should be coming any day now, with Training Season being the only remaining song on the chart, at #187(-37) as of today. Check out the former thread in the series, 'Illusion' evaporates ! Let's get right into it! Dua Lipa began teasing 'Houdini's release by doing what she does best: serving a beauty shot on Instagram. The post seemingly gained a lot of attention for her standards, as the likes count (2.6M) is about 4 times the amount of likes of her posts nowadays (700-800K) The singer, known for her Spotify shenanigans, started practicing her antics rather earlier than usual, changing the Spotify covers of her entire discography a month before the release. This way, innocent people looking for songs such as One Kiss (feat. Dua Lipa) by Calvin Harris or Prisoner (feat. Dua Lipa) by Miley Cyrus would stumble upon these new cover arts and be alert of her upcoming release. The song then came out in November to what has become synonymous with a Dua Lipa release: an immediate #1 placement on Spotify's biggest playlist, TTH, with the cover. The track was also sent to radio on release day with a radio deal The song showed signs of underperformance right on: it failed to outstream then two months old Greedy on release day, flopped out of the Spotify Global top 10 in a week, failed to go #1 at her very own home market the UK, failed to go top 10 in the US and spent only 1 (one) (UNO) week in the top 20. But under Warner's very generous funding, Dua Lipa continued following the footsteps of 2019's Don't Start Now and promoted the track well into 2024, spamming various new versions to streaming platforms weekly while continuing the reign at the top of TTH. And then And THEN... ... Including a brand new visual for it And THEN......... Dua Lipa had also performed the track numerous times during the period, most notoriously to millions of people watching the Grammys. Warner finally dropped the track from TTH after over 5 months, on April 12 (only to make space for 'Illusion' topping the playlist starting that day). The song is still enjoying a playlist reach of mostly over 100M since then, currently sitting at a whopping 92,276,575 while still missing the top 200 of the Spotify chart. In comparison with the playlist reach of some singles by her peers from last year, that are actually charting right now: #62 SZA - Snooze (81M reach) #78 Sabrina Carpenter - Feather (111M reach) #88 Billie Eilish - What Was I Made For (89M reach) #122 Sabrina Carpenter - Nonsense (57M reach) #137 Doja Cat - Paint The Town Red (116M reach) #139 The Weeknd - Popular (47M reach) #153 Olivia Rodrigo - Vamprie (66M reach) Houdini is more recent than all of these songs, yet fails to make the chart with a similar playlist reach or more. It is also noteworthy that Houdini's parent album was released only 3 weeks ago, and that the song sits at the front of the tracklist as track #2. So, ATRL, why?
  19. one of the best girl groups & THE BEST 4th gen group is here and they just dropped KAOTY have you listened to it? what are your initial thoughts and later thoughts? stream this skipless grower masterpiece 💚
  20. What are your predictions for this category so far? I'm expecting already some songs like: "Houdini" or "Illusion" - Dua Lipa "Whatever" - Kygo & Ava Max "Von Dutch" - Charli XCX "I Don't Wanna Wait" David Guetta & OneRepublic "CONTIGO" - KAROL G & Tiesto "Got Me Started" - Troye Sivan I still don't know if "MY HOUSE" by Beyoncé fits in this category. Another songs i'm confused about is "yes, and?" by Ariana Grande because i don't know if her team will send the Remix to Best Pop Duo or this category, can be both elegible?
  21. What are the artists who could be evolving and trying new things musically, but won't because of their stans' close-mindedness? Ngl, I love Kylie, but her fanbase is the reason she's been accharine dance-pop since 2004 - with a few exceptions. The reception they gave to Body Language (one of her best) is unforgivable. Also, Chromatica had some bops, but the energy around that project always felt like this: What other artists fit the bill?
  22. Literally deserve to be 2 of the biggest hits of the summer I fear
  23. As we know, many popgirls these days are very hands-on when it comes to the creation of their music, only choosing to release songs and albums that reflect what's going on in their personal lives. Nowadays, it's almost expected that the girls write or co-write their own material, in order to seem "authentic" to their fans, who romanticize the idea that their fave is communicating to them directly via their music. With that in mind, which of the popgirl's music feels most impersonal to her, as if her A&R team curated a bunch of demos, purchased them for her to sing, and then slapped her name in the co-writing credits, in order to make it seem like she was more involved than she actually was? Discuss, and keep it Caillou
