paramore – hard times

ParamoreHardTimes.jpg

this song was criminally underrated this year by both consumers and critics.

"hard times" and after laughter are basically pop paramore at apex. the guitar is absolutely groovy and disco-y, which definitely complements hayley and is probably something that paramore definitely needed to try all this time, for real.

the way how hayley screams "andigottagettorockbottom!" and "hit me like lightning!!" is honestly great too. i feel like those parts are truly underrated and they deserve attention.

and i truly dig the pessimistic lyrics. happy but sad songs with super pessimistic lyrics are honestly great, and I don't know why?

I'm ready for more paramore, honestly.

alt-J – in cold blood

In_Cold_Blood_alt-J.jpg

01110011…

alt-J came back this year with their third album, relaxer, in what i like to call, june madness 2017, when artists from SZA to bleachers to lorde to katy perry were all releasing. alt-J had released relaxer on 2 june. quite early.

the song's setting is at what seems to be a nice summer pool party that is going well, up until a murder happens:

Kelly, let's dive, dive down
To the pool's bottom where we belong
Kelly, you're sinking like a bleeding stone
All above crowd around, so f*cking loud

[…]
My pool, summer, summer, pool, summer vibes killed
In cold blood

though the thing about this song is that one could interpret the lyrics to be something about life and how everyone sees summer as a season of life and fun, without knowing that everything can easily go wrong.

the instrumentation is a bit like a huge slam of sound and instruments, from the guitar to that insane keyboard riff towards the end of the song. joe newman comes in with his standard somewhat-nasal voice with a pretty sick note that he manages to hold towards the end for a bit of a long time considering the song's length. simply put, the instrumentation is quite a treat.

i honestly wonder what is gonna come next from alt-J.

logic – 1-800-273-8255 (featuring alessia cara, khalid)

18002738255Logic.jpg

things that are good about this song:

  • the original idea
  • the production

okay? but there's a lot of things wrong with this song.

the first thing that obviously everyone keeps mentioning is the really obnoxious "WHO CAN RELATE? WOO!" adlib in the hook. for a suicide song, you can't help but laugh as logic doesn't even realise he's being highkey insensitive for including such a bane line as some kind of way to pep your listener.

the second thing is the song itself. it's super shallow, from the hook to the whole idea that calling a hotline is gonna free you from the shackles that are suicidal thoughts and deep depression. what logic — and everyone else involved with this song — don't get is that a lot of these people who are at-risk and suicidal are quite past the point of simply just dialling the national suicide prevention helpline.

like, let's be real. does anyone genuinely think that dialling 1-800-273-8255 is gonna turn at-risk suicidal people away from those thoughts? thought so.

this song is straight [monique]clownery[/monique] and, again, is extremely shallow and bad. the lyrics definitely do NOT help people. he has his heart in the right place but he seriously poorly executed this concept, inadvertently making it seem like he's mocking suicidal people.

though sometimes i do have my doubts that he even really cares and is just doing this as self-service, considering he's the same guy who was gonna name the album this song shows up on (everybody) africaryan until people told him how rightfully f*cked up that name is, yet he reserved it as the name of a track on the album. go figure, logic. sigh.

POST WRITING NOTE: so i wrote this before billboard wrote an article saying that drew taggart wrote this song. not surprised. no wonder the "hook" is so banal and the song sounds like a mockery of actually suicidal people.

the entirety of memories… do not open by the chainsmokers

Memories...Do_Not_Open.jpg

even the title of the album warned me to not listen!

the EDM trolls of the music industry have struck back again with their debut LP, memories… do not open.

i mean the album came out at the most opportune time; right at the end of spring break for most american teenagers, and only a few weeks before the first slew of music festivals kick in (coachella). this is probably the best time for the labels to get out any generic "bright" EDM music stuff that music festivalgoers eat up. the radios start getting hungry for brighter music as the school year is coming to an end in the US. I guess this was the perfect time for the chainsmokers to release… this.

to be honest, i find my biggest issue with the production and the vocals. i mean, the lyrics are pretty bad as well; from "we were staying in paris // to get away from your parents" to "i know it's pathetic // f*ck it, yeah, i said it" to that… "hook" in "my type". this doesn't help. they reek of narcissism. (side note: seeing the chainsmokers pretending as if they're some poetic geniuses for making up a "definition" for the word "paris" for their song is srsly hilarious)

first of all, i want to know who exactly told drew taggart that he could sing and write? like, seriously. he's super flat and monotone. listening to his voice after a minute is quite grating. he sounds super whiney and it doesn't help that the lyrics that he writes are super grating and whiney.

and the production absolutely sucks. a lot of the songs are basic pop songs with a sh*tty generic EDM drop (or "break" in the case of the song "paris") thrown into the hook because why not? it doesn't help that the song they did with chris martin coldplay is literally "roses" with a reworked instrumental for the pre-hook and the verses. before i even first heard the "drop" i had already thought the song was pretty bad, but then the drop came and i was just… wow

honestly at this point, i don't think the chainsmokers will come back to the quality they served pre-collage EP era. "roses" and "kanye" are absolutely nice songs, and it's a shame that they quickly sold themselves out to the cheesy coachella youtube royalty free EDM sh*t.

kendrick lamar – DNA.

Kendrick_Lamar_-_Damn.png

I will be honest; I am a sucker for political rap, especially when it's coming from black artists. these are, at least 99.9% of the time, artists who have been through actual struggles. kendrick lamar is one of these artists; he grew up in section 8 housing and his family lived on welfare. I… think he knows the struggle.

so to hear an artist who's been through struggle actually rap about struggle is refreshing in today's mainstream music culture.

I know murder, conviction
Burners, boosters, burglars, ballers, dead, redemption
Scholars, fathers dead with kids
And I wish I was fed forgiveness
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, soldier's DNA
Born inside the beast, my expertise checked out in second grade
When I was 9, on-sale motel, we didn't have nowhere to stay
At 29, I've done so well, hit cartwheel in my estate

not only is the song refreshing because of his background, the song is refreshing because it just sounds f*cking GOOD. he has amazing flow on this song, first of all. back-to-back bars with great references. the lyrics themselves are also great (I told you I'm a sucker for political rap).

Tell me somethin'
You motherf*ckers can't tell me nothin'
I'd rather die than to listen to you
My DNA not for imitation
Your DNA an abomination

those last two lines: "my DNA not for imitation, your DNA an abomination". those are two amazing lines. especially now that rap and its cousin genres are going through another wave of mainstream relevance.

and asides from the lyrics and his flow, the production on this track is impeccable. his flow complements the hard-hitting beats so well. by the way, note that I said "beats". 's'. with a plural. the beat switch on this song is amazing, and so is the little intermission verse between the two beats.

all-in-all, the song is f*cking great. amazing flow, amazing beats, amazing lyrics, and the background. it's a socially aware political banger.

lil uzi vert – xo tour llif3

C7n5slUX0AAz-Qu.jpg

2017 was the year of the rise of, something that I and a lot of critics like to call, emo rap. star artists of these genres include lil uzi vert and xxxtentacion. like I just said, I'm not really alone in this: reading music forums like rateyourmusic and 4chan's /mu/, you can see people even call this movement "punk rap".

anyway, XO tour life (you won't catch me spelling it like that in writing ever again) is one of emo rap's breakout tracks.

lil uzi vert is typically an artist who doesn't really offer that much to the table compared to other new mainstream trap acts. his flow is mostly monotone… his lyrics are usually not that special neither. but XO tour life carries something different from lil uzi vert. something special.

XO tour life's lyrics are pretty nihilistic and quite melancholy, which is unlike most of his other songs. it's not following the standard that he and other newcomer trap artists set. it breaks past this standard, settings its own. it's about him getting f*cked over by a relationship that's gone wrong, chasing his sorrows and pain away with money ("all my friends are dead", a reference to US presidents on USD banknotes) and drugs ("please, xanny, make it go away"), while making references to suicide ("shoulda saw the way she looked me in my eyes // she said 'baby, I am not afraid to die' // all my friends are dead, push me to the edge") and betrayal. it's gutting, it's sad, it's an emotional rollercoaster.

his flow is definitely on a new level in this song. it's still a bit monotone, but it's definitely changed for the better. it suits the lyrics very well.

then there's the beat. it's quite hypnotic. the bass hits hard, and that door creak sound is a bit awesome… lowkey.

this song is amazing and gutting, and it deserves to be the smash that it was (or still is? it's still charting quite high on Spotify). I hope to see more of this music in the mainstream in the future.

yaeji – drink i'm sippin on

gm137-yaeji.jpg

if I'm gonna be honest, this song is awesome on multiple levels. there's not that much korean-language indie music that one can find; a lot of korean music is pop/idol stuff. that being said, yaeji is a pure diamond in the world of indie.

her breakout single "drink i'm sippin on" is a sultry, lean, and sensual song about forgetting things you do, people not getting you (and you knowing it), and enjoying being yourself. the bass in this song is quite bumpy… not sure how to describe it, honestly. you can hear for yourself if you listen to the song.

yaeji's leaned-back vocals carry this song into a mellow atmosphere, with a simple line repeated over and over for the hook: "geugeaniya, geugeaniya, geugeaniya, aniya geugeaniya…"… "that's not it, that's not it, that's not it, no, that's not it"… simple, and seemingly nonsensical, but the line sounds so beautiful phonetically. with something that sounds so lovely repeated over and over like this on a perfectly mellow beat, it's super therapeutic.

this song absolutely slaps, and deserves the underground recognition it has.

sza – the weekend

24c1fa32099bbf3f8b4c06232730624e.600x600x1.jpg

the great thing about sza is that, despite her openness about her insecurities in her music ("drew barrymore"), she still owns it like the badass she is ("supermodel").

in "the weekend", you see sza talking about timesharing and being the "weekend girl". songs with topics like these usually aren't sultry like this song. they're more bitter and harsh; this song has a bouncy synth bassline with a somewhat soulful justin timberlake vocal sample.

the production is great; the synth that starts off the song with the vocal samples just sound great. there's those little sparkly noises in the seconds before the first verse that I simply adore. then there's that bass. WHEW. it sounds sooooo good in my earphones, like, legit, it's so good. I also kind of dig that stereo panning in the hook, where parts of her vocals go towards the right channel. nice touch by thankgod4cody.

the thing that makes this song so good is how she asserts her position, with expectations ("10:30, no later than / drop them draws, give me what I want") of her own. she knows that she's the weekend girl and she's owning it like a boss.

there's also the freestyle-ish vocals that made me fall in love with sza's album CTRL anyway. you can hear more of this in songs like "supermodel" and "drew barrymore".

this song is truly great.

honourable mentions

kesha - "praying" // absolutely gutting and saturnine, this song deserved to get the critical praise it did. it truly comes form a place of pain, considering the allegations she made against dr luke. it's great to see kesha branching out into new genres outside of the usual "dance" stuff she used to do.

yaeji - "raingurl" // a total club bop about letting loose, with a hard-hitting bass in the beat at the start of the song. surely a song to capture everyone's attention in the club. can't wait to see more from yaeji.

lorde – everything else from melodrama // I would have put "melodrama" as the entry for lorde in the main list, but that would simply be a blurb far too long. the whole album is f*cking amazing and honestly, it deserves every single accolade and recognition it gets. the album is a painting of pain, recovery, and life in general. "sober", "homemade dynamite", and "the louvre" are all amazing tracks. there are so many f*cking amazing musical moments in this album it's honestly astounding, from the instrumentation to the heartfelt vocals and writing, everything about this album is amazing. brava, lorde.

kendrick lamar – everything else from damn. // i would have put "HUMBLE." in the main list but since that song was so acclaimed already and was already the hit from DAMN., I decided to put "DNA." instead. (also, the lyrical content with the context kind of > "HUMBLE.") the album is phenomenal in every aspect. "LOVE." is f*cking amazing, and I'm happy it's turning into a top 40 hit. can't wait to see him next time.

bleachers – everything else from gone now // sorry for there being so many albums in this section. I would have done a "best albums" section but I don't listen to albums like that… lol. this album is total 80's bruce springsteen nostalgia stuff, with a few experimental tracks like "I'm ready to move on/mickey mantle reprise". like I already said, truly cannot wait for their next LP.

sza – "love galore" (featuring travis scott), "drew barrymore" // these two songs are major standouts from CTRL. they absolutely slap and "drew barrymore" is so raw and personal and I absolutely love it. GAH! and "love galore" is amazing. the tropical laidback chill beat is every-f*cking-thing, and travis scott lays it down on this track too. brava!

alt-J – "3WW" and "deadcrush" // "3WW", the lead single from relaxer, and "deadcrush" are absolutely great. that weird shaky-ish sound in "deadcrush" is a bit of an earcandy for me. the way how "3WW"'s chorus just slams in is awesome. these songs are both standouts. there's also "hit me like that snare" but that song is way too hilarious for me to like.

post malone – "rockstar" (featuring 21 savage), "i fall apart" // i like this song but not enough for me to consider it one of the best of the year. this song has a nice atmosphere to it and the beat is great. post malone's singing stuff near the hook is great as well. 21 laid down a good verse too. "i fall apart" is an emotional anthem of some sort about suffering after a brutal breakup. post malone showing his emotional side is all we need, to be honest.

calvin harris – "slide" (featuring frank ocean, migos) // a modern disco slapper, this song has a seriously groovy beat. the riff at the start is absolute ear candy. frank ocean lays down nice vocals and migos comes in with nice verses. calvin absolutely bodied the instrumentals.

sigrid – "don't kill my vibe" // scandi talent does it again, with upcoming norwegian songstress/songwriter sigrid debuting this year with her breakout single "don't kill my vibe", an EDM song with a booming hook and lean production during the verses. a song about being a bad bitch and not letting people get in your way (probably even more so considering she's a young woman in the music industry), the pop music scene truly needed a song like this.

worstsongsg6stp.png

hopsin – happy ending

2f183295c52035959a6b3f775cddc0ec.630x630x1.jpg

this song is so sh*t i can't believe i'm actually giving it attention.

idk how but this song managed to fly under the radar for literally every major music publication, but the music community rightfully didn't hold back when the song came out.

i'm gonna be short and straight to the point. this song is quite possibly the most sh*t rap song i've heard this year, probably ever to be honest. devoid of humour, it's a racist "joke" about asian masseuses giving their clients beejes and having sex with them, because… exoticism of foreign cultures is so hilarious!!, or something.

even if you just ignore the racist bullsh*t in this song, it's a steaming pile of autotuned crap with sh*t production.

I was gonna simply post a video of a monkey pissing into its own mouth for a video, but i'd rather not get warned for obscene content for a song like this.

luis fonsi, daddy yankee – despacito (justin bieber remix also)

d01f15b3cec316f3baef2fb637ef8305.1000x1000x1.jpg

there's so many things wrong with this song.

first, i have something to say about luis fonsi himself. why is he suddenly some king of reggaeton? he used to do pop ballads and **** with a bowl cut, now he's suddenly this cool dude doing reggaeton? like, okay… lmao.

my other issue with this song is that it's literally every trope of reggaeton music, but somehow everyone ate it up. did the US not learn from the mid/late 00's when reggaeton had a slight moment? i guess not.

there's nothing unique or good about this song. it's your standard washed out reggaeton beat with some salsa music thrown into it, with """sexy""" lyrics (there's a lyric about him wanting to explore a woman's labyrinth, nuff said).

and it doesn't help that justin bieber actually went and remixed this. his verse is not really that good and the way he says "despacito" is actually quite grating after a few listens. what even makes it funnier is that he can't even remember the lyrics live… whoops!

ed sheeran – shape of you

92f0a248f93f5113dcead2f62c1ff24d.1000x1000x1.jpg

do i really have to explain why this song sucks?

first of all, is it me or does ed sound seriously smug/creepy in this song? like, "put that body on me"? "my bedsheets smell like you"? it's seriously creepy and hearing him sing it makes me feel like i need to bathe in hot water to rinse myself of any dirt i picked up listening to those lines. he doesn't sound sexy at all.

and then there's the beat. it's the most uninspired thing… ever. it's sia's "cheap thrills" but watered down to a simple xylophone. at least "cheap thrills" had some texture to it… this song is largely barebones asides from the "oh-wa-oh-wa" vocalisations in the middle of the hook, and ed's occasional guitar strumming. it's just lazy and uninteresting.

though what's funny about this track is how he seemingly tried to get away with not giving writing credit for the people behind TLC's "no scrubs". it took legal threats for him to actually recognise that he did take melodies from the song. now that's hilarious.

there's not much to say about this bc the song is quite barebones anyway.

dishonourable mentions

lil pump – "gucci gang" // i would've put this on the list but for what it is, it doesn't deserve to be on the same list as songs like "take a knee my ass" and "happy ending". i guess the beat is cute but the way how "gucci gang" is repeated ad nauseum with that stupid "my bih luh do cocaine" line is… no.

maroon 5 – "what lovers do" (featuring SZA) // it's everything annoying with maroon 5 put into one song with an annoying hook. only thing that kept me from putting it on the actual list was the inclusion of SZA.

cardi b – bodak yellow

b15ce4ad5ab3346f90bebf66916c8de9.1000x1000x1.jpg

one of the greatest things to have happened to the US (and the US urban scene) in 2017 is cardi B's rise from instagram personality and reality TV star to full-time rap star.

this song is a ring of shots fired at her detractors, critics, and everyone in between who told her that she wouldn't be able to make it anywhere. it's about her climb from living in poverty and being in an abusive relationship to being "the hottest in the streets", as she calls it.

"bodak yellow" speaks on many themes relating to cardi B; that is, her work ethic ("dropped two mixtapes in six months // what bitch working as hard as me?"), her personality, her HBIC-ness, her struggle, and her legitimacy. also, her ability to steal anyone's mans:

I might just chill with your boo
I might just feel on your babe
My p*ssy feel like a lake
He wanna swim with his face; I'm like, "Okay"
I let him get what he want, he buy me Yves Saint-Laurent

more on her p*ssy:

My p*ssy glitter, it's gold

cardi B on this track exerts her dominance and her let-loose attitude that most of us long-time cardi B lovers already know of. you can hear it in her flow. actually…

I get that she took her flow from kodak black (hence the song being named à la his name), but the thing is that she kind of took the flow and made it hers in a way. in "no flockin'", you didn't really hear the same attitude and aggressiveness that cardi B displays when she's using the same flow. you can tell she really worked, and is working, hard for this, and that she really wants it.

I'm so happy for cardi B, though. I'm so happy she's finally found major success and that she's becoming a major name in the entertainment industry. and I'm also happy that she's now tangentially related to ms. lauren hill, in that they are both the only two female rap artists to see the #1 spot while being the only act on their respective songs. "doo-wop (that thing)" is also a great song, and I'm happy that it's now related to "bodak yellow". congrats, cardi B.

lorde – green light

GOD. WHERE DO I F*CKING START. sorry but this blurb will be extremely scatterbrained.

so many things about this songs are just so goddamn amazing I simply cannot find the words for it. it's an experience.

the song teeters on the edge of commercial electropop, but at the same time the production is so unique and captivating, you wouldn't expect to hear this on Z100 or BBC 1.

the lyrics of this song are quite heartwrenching; a song about a painful breakup and needing the "green light" to get over it, a song about breaking free from baggage of breaking up, and a song about trying to hide the emotional pain of breaking up (the lyric about doing makeup, and the video shows her leaving a party and losing her mind elsewhere throughout a city).

the instrumentation first felt quite jarring, as it felt like it went from one song to another, but then after the second listen, I was truly, truly hooked. then there's piano that waltzes in without any warning, and it seems to fit in so well. like a piano in a house song, it captivates. the song has a bassline that simply is phenomenal, and is something everyone can get behind. the piano chords that play throughout the verses easily add more feeling to the song.

and lorde sounds completely gutted, just like the lyrics in the song; you can hear her pain and her wanting to break free, through the verses and the hook. raspy, moody, gutted, but all the while sounding euphoric, especially when the hook hits. the absolute catharsis of the hook is what makes this song so emotional and euphoric.

also, can we PLEASE f*cking talk about that monstrous synth in the outro? jesus christ. the literal poster child of intended catharsis in music. absolutely phenomenal.

this song is quite possibly THE best song of 2017. 2017 has been the year of the lorde for me and honestly, I couldn't have been more happier. I love this type of lorde. the emotional and captivating lorde. this is the lorde we wanted, and she that is the lorde she gave, with this elated song and the absolutely stellar album that it heralded, melodrama. I can't wait to see what she gives us next.

liam payne – strip that down (featuring quavo)

Liam_Payne_-_Strip_That_Down_(Official_Single_Cover).png

there's a reason why the acronym for this song is 'STD'!

just like "shape of you", there's not much to say about this song because that's literally one of the defeating qualities of this song; there's not much to it.

the thing about this song is that it really tries hard to be this kind of sexy pop-R&B club bop, but it truly falls flat as soon as that first bass kicks. it's literally "shape of you: the electric boogaloo". which is funny because guess who wrote this?

but that's the thing. the song literally sounds like a demo reject of "shape of you". i mean, even down to the whole rent-a-rapper feature from quavo! i genuinely believe that this is quite possibly a throwaway track from divide. that weird xylophone tropical house sound that shows up in "shape of you" is extremely reminiscent of the driving beat behind "strip that down".

but anyway, liam used to be one of the more "tame" members of one direction (which he's now "free" of at this time, i guess). but now all of a sudden he's sexy and a bad boy? like, comparing yourself to a ferrari? coke and bacardi? "girl I love it when your body grinds on me"? like, it doesn't even sound like liam payne had barely anything involved with this. (though that's actually pretty likely; there's 16 writers on this song, 13 excluding ed, liam, and quavo.)

how do you book 16 writers for a song and yet come out with this? jesus christ.

jake paul's entire discography this year

I SMELL GOOD!

when "it's everyday bro" initially came out, i really wanted to believe that this song was just novelty rap/a joke and that jake paul and his posse weren't being serious. until he released another song. and another song. and another song. in short, he was actually being serious about this.

there's so many things that are simply wrong about his music that i feel like 90% of the other songs on this list are merely dishonourable mentions compared to this stuff.

first of all, the beat for "it's everyday bro" is simply nonexistent asides from a really boring synth that basically acts as the main and only instrument in the song. then there's those weird female vocals adlibbing throughout the song for… whatever reason? i don't get it. the whole song is a sloppy mess. from that british guy's verse about how england is "his city" to chance talking about how he always "stay litty", or something along those lines. tessa brooks's verse is actually the best part of "it's everyday bro".

i barely have even listened to "jerika" and "ohio fried chicken" but from the <1 minute that i've listened to for each song, they're pretty bad as well.

then there's "that ain't on the news", when jake paul finally got what was coming to him. he had a whole kerfuffle with his neighbours because his "jake paulers" kept coming over to his house, causing disturbance in the neighbourhood. not only that, his vlogs actually became so dangerous that the city of los angeles had to put them on hold because they had literally set a sofa on fire in the backyard of their old house. they had wasted a whole entire hot tub by throwing literal garbage into it, which is an obvious health hazard. this forced him and his posse to move into a new house into calabasas. ANYWAY, the song is really some kind of diss track against the media for accurately reporting stuff that he does. it's him going like "but i did THIS and the media doesn't report that!!". zzz.

just recently (as of the time i've been writing this), he's put out a remix of "it's everyday bro" with gucci mane (who is collabbing with literally everyone) and did a christmas EP with his posse, featuring a track that's a collab with slim jxmmi of rae sremmurd.

slim jxmmi of rae sremmurd.

let that sink in.

i have no idea what this guy's MO is, but if he truly thinks that he's even an okay rapper, he really isn't. if he's serious he needs some serious learning to do… we already know he's only doing this because people hate it and that's how sh*t songs become viral (see: rebecca black's "friday").

let's just hope someone squats on the usernames "jakepaul", "pauljake", "loganpaul", and "paullogan" when vine 2 comes. yes, his brother "raps" too and is also sh*t at it.

PS- as i'm posting this, team 10 is literally falling apart. go figure.

Yep, I enjoyed Liam in 1D but his solo material is incredibly disappointing thus far. So overwhelmingly basic, bland, boring...

Jake Paul :clap3: I barely consider his stuff "music" though. Just an attention-seeking joke.

Never been a fan of Bodak Yellow but it's not unlistenable, at least. Green Light :worship2: Queen went off!

This was a nice Best Of :alexz3: Hope to see you back this December
