Eeveelution Posted December 22, 2017 Author Posted December 22, 2017 (edited) 25. Rina Sawayama - "Alterlife" From: RINA Early 2000s pop is legit a throwback now. Before long people will be making The Fame pastiches and it will be considered unique and interesting, a startling concept. Anyway, Rina Sawayama and her Britney Spears hologram in 3001 shtick is very interesting to me somehow and this song is the best execution of her vision thus far. I live for how intense and crunchy the guitars are and that extended intro is a moment. The chorus here is also huge and anthematic without feeling trite or ‘been there done that’, an excellent song all around. See also: "Take Me as I Am" 24. Taylor Swift - "Don't Blame Me" From: Reputation I think that Reputation’s fatal flaw lies therein the fact that Taylor just can’t seem to decide which narrative she wants to be part of. Across the album, sometimes within the same song (I Did Something Bad), Taylor flits between writing herself as the victim and the villain in her story: it all comes across as looking somewhat confused and hypocritical. Taylor has gotten a lot of flack for writing love songs but honestly it’s where she shines, and her love-crazed turn on Don’t Blame me is much more successful. The song employs subtle gospel influences, one of Reputation’s more interesting stylistic choices, while Taylor herself summons the ghost of Etta James in a truly powerhouse vocal performance. See also: "Delicate" ; "Call it What You Want" 23. Charlotte Gainsbourg - "Deadly Valentine" From: Rest This was a nice surprise, I didn’t know Charlotte sang, I thought she acted or w/e. I love her deadpan delivery in contrast to the maximalist disco production. Word on the street is that Charlotte was streaming the global acclaimed smash “Bad Liar” and modeled her delivery on Selegend’s. Anyway, Deadly Valentine is basically wedding vows over a beat. The gag is, Miss Charlotte is noted for never marrying the father of her kids. I’m not sure exactly what point she’s trying to make with this but I do know that it’s a damn bop. See also: "Kate" ; "Rest" 22. Mura Masa - "Helpline" (feat. Tom Tripp) From: Mura Masa I’ve seen Mura Masa’s debut get some mixed reviews here on ATRL but I liked it! There are many big names on this album: the XCX bop 1 Night, the lovely Christine and the Queens electroballad Second 2 None, he even got Blur’s frontman to sing on the closer. But it was Helpline, featuring Tom Tripp - who I had never heard of before, which ended up as my favourite. I love the little British-isms sprinkled across the lyrics (“I got no money left in my NatWest!”) and also how much energy this song has throughout – It’s a bop! See also: "Nuggets" (feat. Bonzai) ; "Who is it gonna b" (feat. A.K. Paul) 21. Sevdaliza - "Angel" From: ISON it shouldn’t hurt this much to be your angel. Many artists agonize over the perfect metaphors and imagery to perfectly capture their heartbreak, but trip-hop newcomer Sevdaliza needed only those nine words. Over the course of the track, Sevdaliza sighs, coos and roars those words, and in each repetition lies the guilt, resentment, pain, and powerlessness in loving someone that little bit too much. Next time a pop girl attempts a closing piano ballad, they should listen to this first. See also: "Loves Way" ; "Mad Woman" Edited December 23, 2017 by Eeveelution

theblackestday Posted December 22, 2017 Posted December 22, 2017 (edited) Angel... cute next to gorgeous (the rest of ISON) I need writeups tutoring Edited December 22, 2017 by theblackestday
Pink Matter Posted December 23, 2017 Posted December 23, 2017 Nice set! Alterlife, Deadly Valentine, and Helpline are my faves here. Would've chose a different Mura Masa song like Nuggets or 1 Night. And I think the mixed reviews are due to him putting like half of the album out pre-release, most of which were among the best songs on the album.

And I just perused through the album's wiki page and dating back to last April, he released: What If I Go? Love$ick 1 Night All Around The World Second 2 None Blu Nuggets and Helpline all before the album was released this July No wonder people were going 'meh' when the album dropped
