Uncatena Posted December 21, 2017 Posted December 21, 2017 I Wanna Be Like You is a beautiful bop, an Ash highlight. Cool Your Heart is a bop but Dawn lowkey makes the song tbh.
ATRL Moderator madonnas Posted December 21, 2017 ATRL Moderator Posted December 21, 2017 Yeah Right was my #1 on Vince for SOOO long but now about 4-5 other tracks have stuck out to me. It's GREAT though, prob the most adventurous song of the album aside from Party People and Love Can Be.
Eeveelution Posted December 21, 2017 Author Posted December 21, 2017 (edited) 35. Allie X - "Casanova" From: Collxtion II Allie X is another artist who I feel like is a tad disingenuous with all this “avant-garde” imagery when her music is just.. basic pop. Thankfully, Alexandra knows her way around a melody, and on Collxtion II’s centerpiece she barely lets the listener catch his breath as she serves up hook upon hook on this kiss-of to some good-for-nothing boy. See also: "Paper Love" ; "Vintage" 34. Tei Shi - "Baby" From: Crawl Space Tei Shi tries on many different hats on her excellent debut, Crawl Space, but I think the lo-fi plink-plonk pop of Baby suits her best. The instrumentation is deceptively rich here if you pay attention, and her breathy, indie girl vocals get their full shine here. Lowkey don’t know why I like this so much but she did that so it’s here. See also: "How Far" ; "Your World" 33. Tove Lo - "disco tity" From: Blue Lips On paper this shouldn’t be anything special. Oh look, a midtempo Tove Lo song with provocative (well, maybe 10 years ago) lyrics. On first listen, it was really cool and interesting, but by the time Blue Lips dropped in November it was like, actually cool and interesting. I love how Tove kinda throws structure out the window in favour of just doling out lots of hooks over and over, even the synth-chords here are infectious. The video is kinda iconic too. See also: "shivering gold" ; "romantics" (feat. a rapper) 32. Sufjan Stevens - "The Hidden River of My Life" From: The Greatest Gift Mixtape Sufjan Stevens was a busy bee this year: from heartwrenching gay love songs written for Call Me By Your Name to a space concept album with The National alum, there was something for everyone. I think my favourite is this highlight from The Greatest Gift. I can totally see why it didn’t make Carrie & Lowell; the tempo is a little too upbeat, the chorus a little too weird. But I’m glad Suf decided to share this gift with the world nonetheless. See also: "Tonya Harding" ; "Visons of Gideon" 31. Beth Ditto - "Fake Sugar" From: Fake Sugar Beth Ditto’s solo debut as a whole didn’t leave a huge lasting impression on me, but its title track certainly did. The guitar chords here are so lovely and really help to conjure up this wistful and nostalgic mood which I really love. And Beth knows how to serve a vocal without necessarily doing the most, which is nice. See also: "In and Out" ; "Savoir Faire" Edited December 22, 2017 by Eeveelution
Pink Matter Posted December 21, 2017 Posted December 21, 2017 Only know Tove (good sing btw). I heard Wallowa Lake Monster a while ago and it's amazing so I'll probably check out The Hidden River of My Life soon.
ultraviolence.xx Posted December 21, 2017 Posted December 21, 2017 (edited) HIDDEN RIVER whew i love talent also tonya harding and VoG (which is my personal fav) Edited December 21, 2017 by ultraviolence.xx
Eeveelution Posted December 21, 2017 Author Posted December 21, 2017 (edited) 30. Marika Hackman - "Boyfriend" From: I'm Not Your Man You might expect Boyfriend to be a pining love song to some unattainable boy, especially after that first line. But no, written about how straight men do not take gay relationships seriously, Marika gleefully fantasizes about stealing some poor bloke’s girlfriend and imagines having his whole world in her soft, delicate hands. All sing-song hooks and sardonic lyrics (and some screams for good measure), this song is just so much fun, moreso than a lot of indie rock this year. See also: "Gina's World" ; "My Lover Cindy" 29. Fever Ray - "Idk About You" From: Plunge Idk About You (and a lot of the album) was so jarring to me initially, Karin Drejier’s voice is certainly something. But thankfully I saw the light and realised this is kinda of the club banger of the year? This song is just batshit crazy and I love it. Karin and Nidia really weren’t afraid to take it there with the production. I can feel my soul leave my body for a bit between 2:40 and 3:00. See also: "This Country" ; "An Itch" 28. Moses Sumney - "Quarrel" From: Aromanticism Moses Sumney’s debut album is called Aromanticism and, the title probably gives it away, it explores relationships lacking romantic love. How many of our faves have gone an album without writing a love song? Quarrel is sprawling and ambitious, but totally engaging throughout thanks to the stunning instrumentation and that voice. I remember I already raved about his voice in my best of last year but like, I can’t praise it enough. He literally could have Chris Brown’d an album of 45 songs and I would listen to it willingly. See also: "Doomed" 27. Laura Marling - "Wild Once" From: Semper Femina I thought this was about doing lots of coke and partying or something but it’s about how Laura feels at one with nature etc. ANYWAY, this is my favourite from Semper Femina. I love how she sings in this exaggerated English accent as though to poke fun at herself for being really really posh. Laura takes her sound in several interesting directions on Semper Femina, but I like how familiar sounding this is. Like many LM songs, a guitar forms the backbone here, but dapples of piano and strings creep into the mix as the song progresses, a choice which is one of many examples of how she has grown as an artist over 6 (!!) albums. See also: "The Valley" ; "Next Time" 26. The xx - "Dangerous" From: I See You Opening I See You, the xx’s best album to date, Dangerous is shock to anyone who thought that they would make another record of low-key bedroom pop. The song is about the age-old trope of falling for someone when you should know better: It reminds me of this one time I was accidentally talking to this alt-right… never-mind. The horns = sirens idea is a tad obvious, but the xx have always been unshowy songwriters and from a listener’s standpoint, it’s perfect. Yeah, like I said, i think it's probs their best record. I feel like they gave Jamie more control after In Colour cause the production is way more vibrant and fun this time around. Not a Coexist-type retread imo. 16 hours ago, Lazuli said: Disco Boobs Sufjan Wild Once and Quarrel are cute too Please contribute your story in the Your Crush 3.0 thread I am very eager to read it Hihi maybe one day. 13 hours ago, MP2K said: some good picks and write ups Lemme see what Marika is giving.
