Playa Playa Posted January 3, 2018 Posted January 3, 2018 So many films I haven't heard of! Let me peep the trailers to see if I'm interested I liked AG's structure even though it took awhile to get going. It's unfortunate both Fueller and Michael Green have left. Legion and Big Little Lies were both slayed the start of the year.

HBO just wants to milk it because it was a hit. There's no more story to tell and it'll just turn into generic murder-mystery because the core story (Assaults) is finished.
Luigi Posted January 5, 2018 Posted January 5, 2018 Ahhh, all that talent in the movies list. Lady Bird, Personal Shopper, On the Beach at Night Alone, A Quiet Passion I still need to see so much other films like Faces Places and Lady Macbeth. But omg, shocked @ that #1. I kinda just dismissed it when I first heard about it but I guess I was wrong. Will have to see that too!
Maddox Posted January 5, 2018 Author Posted January 5, 2018 (edited) Comedy #9-6: (sorry my comments are getting shorter) 9. The Good Place - NBC/People Of Earth - TBS: (Tie) The Good place proved it could still maintain its quality after the surprising cliffhanger of last year, creating new paths and exploring deep into its characters particularly Ted Danson's Michael and D'Arcy Carden's Janet. It's funny, smart, heartwarming and interesting to follow. People Of Earth is similar in the sense that it started as a silly guilty pleasure about a journalist who befriends a bunch of lunatics who believe in aliens and reptiles conspiracies; later turned into an engaging mystery show that keeps you hyped as each episode ends. I honestly did not expect to love it this much! There are elements of The Office's workplace comedy antics mixed the heart of Parks and Rec. I have no idea where the show intends to go next but i'm excited. Also there is a big event that happens halfway through the second season that changes the course of the series so stay away from spoilers. 8. The End of the F***ing World - Channel 4/Netflix: This was released earlier on Channel 4. It's about two psychotic teenagers who are sick of the world and decide to leave their town. It's basically a roadtrip series gone wrong, it kinda reminds me a bit of the movie "God Bless America" thematically. Anyway i loved it a lot, finished it in one evening. It's on netflix right now, don't watch any trailer so you won't get spoiled! 7. Search Party - TBS: After the events of last year, i was doubtful of S2's outcome but i'm glad the writers proved me wrong! Watching each member of the gang trying to cope with that unfortunate accident yet still self destruct in the process was hilarious. Early and Meredith Hagner may be the MVPs of the show but Alia Shawkat still had the best moment during the finale wearing that gorgeous red dress and that evil look when she (spoiler) (spoiler) from the (spoiler) Regarding the finale: Spoiler Either the whole scene with Dory getting caught may be one of her hallucinations since she's been feeling more guilty over what she's done, or she did turn herself in by making the call and waiting for the cops to catch her. Another possibility is the anonymous call may come from Portia since we've seen how vulnerable she can be when she's with Duplass' character. Anyway whatever it is, i'm perched to find out! 6. BoJack Horseman - Netflix: This was a lighter season compared to the third one. We got Mr Peanutbutter go through an election (not my favorite storyline, kinda dragged a bit...) BoJack dealing with a daughter he just discovered and his cold mother, Todd doing Todd stuff... but the true highlight of the season was Princess Carolyn. Just when it seemed she got her life back on track, everything fell apart with her suffering a miscarriage, breaking up with her boyfriend and firing Judah. The Ruthie episode hit me hard all thanks to Amy Sedaris' wonderful work. I can't believe i'm feeling sad over a fictional cat Edited January 5, 2018 by Maddox

Playa Playa Posted January 5, 2018 Posted January 5, 2018 (edited) I started The End of the F***ing World but the Channel 4 app was so bad. I'm going to finish it later, first 2 eps were good! Love The Good Place, Search Party and BoJack Horseman! Princess Carolyn The first two managing to avoid a sophomore slump was great. I loved Search Party's cliffhanger and all the possibilities it entails. 17 minutes ago, Maddox said: Most of them are online They better at least keep the cast together, even Kristin Chenoweth is unsure if she coming back... Wicked Posted January 7, 2018 Posted January 7, 2018 I didn't see End of the School Shooter World... I'll give it a try. Didn't get to watch Search Party S2 yet. I think this season of BoJack was just as heavy as last season though. The Good Place! I dropped People of Earth after the first episode of S2, might go back.
Uncatena Posted January 8, 2018 Posted January 8, 2018 TEOFTW is on my watchlist, loooved The Good Place and Search Party absolutely did that. The transition from a dark comedy to a comedic drama was flawless.
rihannafan Posted January 8, 2018 Posted January 8, 2018 I personally thought BH this season was sadder than the last
montrealxo Posted January 9, 2018 Posted January 9, 2018 i really need to get into Search Party. i hear nothing but good things about it
Maddox Posted January 10, 2018 Author Posted January 10, 2018 (edited) Drama: #9-3: 9. Broadchurch - ITV: I was worried this final season would turn into **** but i'm glad it didn't. It follows Miller and Hardy as they investigate a serious sexual assault case. First of all, props to the show for taking time to explore Trish's character, and understanding deep into her physical and mental state which not common on TV or worse get played for thrills (see ITV's Liar) The build up was executed brilliantly. We get left in doubt abt the culprit's identitiy and the revelation was really surprising. Also one of the highlights of the show is how they managed to inject more humanity into its characters partiularly the Latimers' journey through their pain and agony along the three seasons. The evolution of Mark's anguish was so well interpreted this season and Andrew Buchan was heartbreaking in the last episodes making this ending even more emotional Not to forget the Miller/Hardy pairing which is ICONIC and i'm going to miss it deeply! 8. The Americans - FX: This was my least favorite season of the show, it took me a long while to finish it. Felt they dedicated too much time for Paige which i get it but still... Despite that, the show is one of the best TV shows airing right now, it's more about the romantic journey between Philip and Elisabeth, and their transition from being the cold hearted soviets into an empathetic individuals who are capable of love and compassion. It really took some time to get there, and i understand why people would get turned off by it, but you ultimately stay for the performances especially from Rhys and Russell. Perched for the sixth season! 7. The Crown - Netflix: Despite being a little slow paced, this was way superior to the first season, we get to witness some interesting facts such as the Nazi-royal family connections, the Suez Crisis etc... But the heart of the show remains with Elizabeth and Margaret. The latter steals the show tbh, becoming the most interesting character to follow. Her unfortunate love hardships is intense and fascinating to watch, especially her relationship with Armstrong. I also felt really bad for the queen on the Kennedy episode when she learned what Jackie said abt her, it wouldn't work at all if it wasn't for Foy's performance. Phillip didn't bother me much although he's best when he's sidelined. Also this show is freaking well made, from the setting, the costumes, the cinematography. It's such a marvel to look at. 6. The Deuce - HBO: (From the TV Fanatics thread:) Abby was a useless character and it shows. She was literally being cramed in any story the writers could find. They made her Franco's girlfriend then turned her into a disposable plot device for the prostitutes + the gay bartender She's the typical manic pixie dream girl with no personality, her mysterious cold attitude is forced. I wouldn't mind if she left next season, the reporter did a better job at giving the viewer an outside view of the deuce than she did. Franco's performance was nice. I liked him more as Vinnie mainly because he got more screentime than his twin brother (although the scene with Frankie being uncomfortable with that gay **** movie was really good) As for Maggie she was amazing Seeing her slowly getting involved with the **** industry was the highlight of the show + her fight with Method Man deserves an award! It's brilliant how the writers were able to keep track of all their storylines with that big of an ensemble. I initially thought it would be The Franco/Gyllenhaal show yet everyone got their time to shine! Overall the show was good, slow at time times but still pleasant to watch thanks to the characters! 5. The Handmaid's Tale - Hulu: A gripping series abt a dystopian future where women who are called "Handmaids", are forced into sexual rituals to give birth to babies. It's chilling and tense. The way they sell you that cold atmosphere is perfect. I like how it took some time for Moss' character to evolve from a broken woman who gave up on the world into someone with a clear direction of escaping that abusive system, i'm intrigued at how they'll keep going for seven seasons, looks like it should end by three tbh. The rest of the cast are great too. Also i don't see it when people drew parallels between the show and the current political climate (like calm down ppl) 4. Mr Robot - USA: The third season got so many twists and turns, wonderful acting, great directing from Esmail. Y'all are so wrong for dropping this at S2, and it wasn't even that bad! 3. Alias Grace - CBC/Netflix: The better adaptation of Margaret Atwood novel won by demonstrating that despite Grace being an alleged murderess, she gets to tell her story in her own terms, she's like a Scheherazade, who controls the narrative and give the details she's comfortable with to Dr Jordan, and it couldn't work without Sarah Gadon's multilayered performance! She amazingly manages to convey Grace's evolution thoughout the years along with the hardships that she's been through, making the character look innocent, contemplative with a calculating demeanour. Overall Alias Grace is a frightening reflection to the unfortunate struggles faced by women during the 19th century and it's worth the watch. Edited January 10, 2018 by Maddox

Wicked Posted January 10, 2018 Posted January 10, 2018 Sex slavery is a reality for many women in foreign countries. If you're just talking about the United States political climate, Trump is putting fear into everybody, especially us, which is making some feel like THT type world for the US is a possibility. Surprised at Alias Grace' placement... And Mr. Robots. And yes BoJack was just as draining this year for Stupid Piece of Sh*t alone.
Maddox Posted January 13, 2018 Author Posted January 13, 2018 Comedy #5-2 5. Review - Comedy Central How can a comedy series end up being this depressing jesus Watching Forrest still being in denial abt the show's cancellation is so grim to watch. The show made a good point as to why he continued on his quests, i mean he survived way too much obstacles to quit but he was still duped by his manipulative producer Grant despite his wife's effort to save him. Overall i'm going to miss this show a lot. Andy Daly was perfect for this show and i can't wait to watch his other projects! 4. Insecure - HBO This year focused on our three main characters Lawrence, Issa and Molly trying to deal with their issues. Watching Issa's fail to handle her "hotation" circle was fun, i hated everything abt Lawrence... i get that they're trying to show that while getting his life back together he still facing relationship issues but at this point he should leave (although the finale made me warm up to him a little) I wish we focused more on Molly's pay gap plot instead of her constant will they won't they with Dro but anyway. The second season was a step down compared to the first, felt like it lacked a little direction but it was still good. The finale was definitely the best episode. Focusing on each character during that specific time period allowed us to understand why they still couldn't understand from their experiences. I'm excited for next season! 3. Crazy Ex Girlfriend - CW I just recently binged this show and i ultimately fell in love with it, it's that brilliant! Although season 2 was not the tea, it still ended on a heartbreaking point with Rebecca wondering why she's still unlucky with love after Josh left her alone at their wedding. Seeing her battling her demons and dealing with this "breakup" on the third season was fun at first then it turned really dark. Usually i don't like when comedies take a dark turn, it kind of messes up their pace (see Shameless) but i'm sure Rachel Bloom can manage to make a balance between the comedic and serious elements of the show + the songs are brilliant and i usually hate musicals. 2. Nathan For You - Comedy Central I was not expecting to be this amazed by the fourth season Nathan Fielder really took his concept to the next level by going waaay over the top to help these small business owners to get back on their feet. Watching the awkward interactions between the two and the way he manages to reach his goal is both hilarious and heartwarming. This is truly the smartest, funniest and most unique show of the year + "Finding Frances" is one of the best episodes of this TV season, if you're not a fan, at least go search for that episode and watch it, you will not regret it!
Wicked Posted January 13, 2018 Posted January 13, 2018 King Nathan + King Andy saving Comedy Central.
Wicked Posted January 13, 2018 Posted January 13, 2018 The entire Review finale was just like jesus christ. Grant is an asshole.

Uncatena Posted January 13, 2018 Posted January 13, 2018 Better Things did things to me this season, one of the most poignant and moving shows on television right now Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is perhaps one of the most underrated shows atm, it's insanely good on soooo many levels. It manages to be really funny and smart, while also covering important topics in a very earnest way. I love it.

I wanted to write about amazingly Adlon manages to convey motherhood on the show but alas... maybe i'll do it in the TV fanatics thread Crazy Ex Girlfriend did a great job at covering Rebecca's diagnosis without being all too dramatic about it, the show's really on a high rn! I hope it stays that way.

The show never feels forced, which is such a delight I agree, the way the handle mental illness is super refreshing, especially since it's through her POV, so it feels more realistic and troubling. Everytime she breaks into song it gets more sad at this point tbh. I hope they get their desired fourth season to finish it.
Playa Playa Posted January 13, 2018 Posted January 13, 2018 Here for THE Americans, Crown, Deuce and Handmaid's Tale getting paired together. Alias Grace lowkey deserves it. for catching up on CEG and showing love whew. You better some respect on S2
