jose168 Posted December 30, 2017 Posted December 30, 2017 tonite, midnight and lmk in our top 10 special shout outs for Liability and Every Night too

Maddox Posted December 30, 2017 Author Posted December 30, 2017 Comedy: #12-10 12. Girls - HBO: This final season did a great job wrapping its storylines while still offering some memorable stand outs, paticularly "American bitch" which dealt with sexual harassement and the abuse of power, "What Will We Do This Time About Adam?" and "Goodbye Tour" I personally like "Goodbye Tour" bc they could've chosen to end the season with the cheesy "we'll always be girfriends!11!!" reunion, instead they went on a sour note bc sometimes friends fall out, relatonships change and people move on. It's a hard truth yet the show portrayed it with a beautiful sequence that almost rivals S1's classic "All Adventurous Women Do" Another thing about this show, is how it showcased Shoshanna's evolution over the years, from the fast talking nonsensical girl into a mature woman who don't take **** even from her close~ friends. Zosia Mamet did a great job at depicting her character's growth and indifference toward the toxic nature of the other girls and i wish we could've seen more of her. Anyway, i'll have fond memories of this season, despite how problematic Lena may be. 11. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel - Amazon: I've been anticipating this show since Amazon shared its pilot back in march and let's just say it exceeded my expectations! I honestly just want to talk about how amazing Rachel Brosnahan is. I was not familiar with her work before but WOW she was so outstanding here i almost want to revisit freaking House Of Cards She truly oozes positivity and charm throughout the season, she commands your attention when she's on screen everyone else looks amateurish next to her. Also her stand ups are solid too! Anyway i just want to be her friend Special shoutout to Tony Shalhoub and Alex Borstein who were brilliant; as well as their beautiful costumes and the wonderful soundtrack. The only setback here is Joel, i like Michael Zegen; he was good on France Ha and Brooklyn, but i don't believe one bit that Midge and him are in love. ASP desperatly wants to convince you that they had something special together yet it doesn't translate well in the show... also almost everyone (besides Miriam and Susie) are not fully developed characters, they just do the same thing every episode. But these are minor weaknesses. If you're a fan of Gilmore Girls and Mad Men or you need to stan for a new icon go watch this NOW!!! 10. Vice Principals - HBO: Walton ****ing Goggins I feel like it's established that antihero based shows are becoming a fad(?) Yet this show makes a compelling case that you could still produce a complex evil character you could still root for. Lee Russell is a selfish, manipulative and a deeply insecure hunty, yet it's so fun watching him trying to stand up for himself and maintain his perfect image while hurting the people around him and fall apart afterwards. This entire series wouldn't work without Goggins' award worthy performance. The rest was good too; we get to know the identity of Gamby's shooter, finally seeing him develop a relationship with Snodgrass and deal with the crazy Jen. Can't wait for McBride and Jody Hill's upcoming projects!

I feel like they don't know whether they want be perceived as serious drama or a cheap thriller relying on twists. It's like as if BLL was centered on whether Celeste or Perry were lying abt the abuse, while giving false hints that Celeste might be lying. That would be made in poor taste. That's the issue to me with Liar.
Wicked Posted December 30, 2017 Posted December 30, 2017 Vice Principals is too low, and shouldn't be in a set with that pos Lena.
Playa Playa Posted December 30, 2017 Posted December 30, 2017 Rachel Brosnahan really did that. You might want to watch Manhattan instead (I haven't watched it but I've heard great things). Didn't really like Joel but he kinda redeemed himself in the finale. Seeing his reaction was priceless Vice Principals & Walton

I understand you point of view, I think that it was a way to get more attention and curiosity from the audience that wanted to know who was the actual liar and it actually worked (It was the highest ratings tv show on British television this year), to me it was very enjoyable as tv show and I like the 2 main actors, I read there will be a second season, I really can't imagine a second season from this kind of story with the same characters
Pink Matter Posted January 1, 2018 Posted January 1, 2018 Not really a TV buff so I can't really comment on your TV list but I peaked through some of your songs and I found some great gems in there (Colour of Water, tonite, LMK, Midnight, Deadly Valentine in your top 10 ). Personal Shopper - Olivier Assayas Spoiler 4. Mudbound - Dee Rees Spoiler 3. Lady Bird - Greta Gerwig Spoiler 2. Faces Places - Agnès Varda, JR Spoiler And my N°1 movie is..... Spoiler 1. Brad's Status - Mike White This might be a pretty basic choice for a number one especially since this year offered many quality movies, yet this one looks like an inoffensive little indie flick. It still feels more relevant because it deals with themes of privilege, entitlement, and bitterness and that's why it stayed with me. Also one of the reasons why i loved this movie is because of Mike White, one of the most talented people out there. He brought us many gems notably the creepy stalker movie "Chuck & Buck", the quirky dramedy "Year Of The Dog", "The Wire" of this decade "Enlightened" (don't @ me) and recently "Beatriz At Dinner". The movie has a simple premise. When taking his son to visit colleges, a middle class father working for a non profit reflects on his life choices when he checks out on his friends from college who became rich and successful unlike him. The biggest strength of Brad's Status is its script, its brutaly honest and precise. You delve directly inside Ben Stiller's mind (who gave a wonderful performance as a whiny old man) technically the movie employs White's signature monologues but they are never grating. You see how Brad gradually contemplates on his "failures": he wonders whether he lacked ambition, or his wife (played by Jenna Fisher) didn't push him enough to the best of his abilities. White here goes through a structured mix of ideas and feelings to make you understand Brad's anguish but he doesn't make his protagonist sympathetic enough (like with Dern's Enlightened) which is showcased on the very end when he gets confronted by a Harvard student who calls him out on his "first world problems" and his lack of perception. "Brad's Status" is a touching lesson on modesty and how we act upon the feeling of lack of fulfillement. It's human to compare ourselves to other people, but we should always remind ourselves of the good things in our life.
Maddox Posted January 2, 2018 Author Posted January 2, 2018 #12-10 Dramas coming later tonight (hopefully)
ATRL Moderator feelslikeadream Posted January 2, 2018 ATRL Moderator Posted January 2, 2018 WTF my fave actor Joaquin Phoenix had a new movie this year and I didn't even know???
Maddox Posted January 2, 2018 Author Posted January 2, 2018 Drama #12-10: 12. American Gods - Starz: After his Hannibal project, Fuller comes back with an adaptation of Gaiman's novel "American Gods" centered around an ex-convict called Shadow Moon, who meets a creepy con man named Mr. Wednesday and quickly gets caught up in a war between the Old Gods and the New Gods. I loved this series a lot. It has all the ingredients. It's crazy, messy, sexy and has an outstanding cast: Ian McShane who was born to play Mr Wednesday, Crispin Glover who was really terrifying as Mr World, Yetide Badaki as Bilquis the goddess of love devouring her lovers inside her vadge, Gillian Anderson (my favorite) as Media turning as Marilyn, Lucille Ball and David Bowie, Orlando Jones as Mr. Nancy who delivered a brilliant monologue in episode 2, the lovely Kristin Chenoweth and Omid Abtahi as Salim the gay muslim taxi driver (props to the show for not appeasing the masses and avoid treating his practice as a hindrance tsk tsk Ansari and Nanjiani) Shadow Moon and Mad Sweeney were okay; they didn't bother me much, unlike Emily Browning who had too much time dedicated to her character... The structure of the show is a bit messy, so unless you haven't read the book you'll have a hard time following this, there were some complaints about the “Coming to America” vignettes, i thought they were fine. Overall the entire show comes together during the finale which was the best of the series so far. Shame that Fuller left during the making of S2 but i'll still be tuning next year to see if it'll get better. 11. Legion - FX: I'm not really into comics, i only wanted to watch this because Noah Hawley was involved. So i peeped the pilot, it was really ****ed up, like there was a random musical sequence, some loud noises, weird editing but i very much enjoyed it. Dan Stevens really surprised me here, he was always the cute Matthew Crawley from Downton to me. Here he plays David Haller, a patient diagnosed with schizophrenia and later discovers he got some superpowers. The season kinda stalled after the pilot when trying to deal with David's memory but then things kicked into full gear by chapter 5. Plaza is absolutely mindblowing as Lenny, one of the most terrifying villains of the year. it's sad how she didn't get any award love this year. The rest of the cast was good too. Perched for S2 even if i'm a bit disappointed Taghmaoui is no longer involved :/ 10. Big Little Lies - HBO: I feel like i have nothing to add about this show but anyway. Great performances, awesome work from Jean-Marc Vallée. It was fun, intriguing, poignant with a relevant message. I don't what they intend to do with the second season but i'll be watching it...
