Don't get me wrong it's still one of the best shows on TV, and obviously it has a flawless cast and enormous budget, but it's truly being let down by the writing. I mean I can't blame them - the creators are terrific adaptors, but that's a hell of a lot different to crafting their own story. I wish George R.R. Martin was more involved in the show. I know the books are like, well they're HIS books he can do whatever the hell he wants. But to take so many years to release the damn things is truly a travesty. It's hard to disagree. The Winterfell plot still gets me annoyed! I'm sure next season will have better episodes with Miguel Sapochnik returning though. I wish George was more involved too. How iconic would it be if he wrote an episode for the final season? And I'll be ready for when he decides to release the books lol. Seeing the differences is going to be so interesting but I'm not sure how I fully feel about that yet.
Playa Playa Posted December 27, 2017 Author Posted December 27, 2017 (edited) Quote 13. People talk about this being the weakest season but I still enjoyed it a lot. I'll agree that some episodes felt a little flat and like less interesting versions of a previous season episode. But it also houses a lot of the show's best ones (“The Ricklantis Mixup”, “Pickle Rick”, “Rest and Ricklaxation”), which contained a wonderful mix of the show's strong points with fresh concepts. “The Ricklantis Mixup” in particular is among the top episodes of the year, a showcase of both the masterful storytelling capabilities and voice acting of Justin Roiland that makes Rick and Morty so amazing....SN: **** the “bad fans”. It's a rampant problem within TV fandoms–unhealthy obsessions with clearly defined toxic characters–but this show especially doesn't deserve them. I think S3 did a solid job at exposing them and condemning Rick's awful behaviour. Even the ridiculous “Pickle Rick” feels like implicit commentary on how they chose to overlook the significant message in favour of the toxic stuff Rick does. This time being to shout a stupid catchphrase just makes them look even more ridiculous lol. Quote 12. Full disclosure: This is my first Amy Sherman-Palladino show, so I can't really compare and contrast with the others, but I sense that it's her most accomplished in tone. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel comes out fully formed in its pilot–a quick-witted delight that chronicles the changing landscape for women through a comedic (and slightly distorted) lens. The show’s titular character, Miriam “Midge” Maisel, played perfectly by Rachel Brosnahan, is a typical '50s housewife who experiences heartbreak and channels it into a becoming a professional stand-up comic. She's uncensored, explosive and most of all, hilarious. The scenes with her onstage are infectiously triumphant as she loses the housewife composure in favour of being a human with imperfections. And the extreme detail that Sherman-Palladino puts into the show's set design, costumes and overall sensibilities is immensely impressive. I didn't want it to end when the final episode started which is surprising, but luckily I knew in advance that another season would be coming. Quote 11. The show picks up the story where the movie left off, using the blackface Halloween party to drive the 10 episode character-driven storyline. Each episode for the first half of the season brilliantly examines the consequences of the event through a different character’s perspective. It's an interesting structure that made bingewatching the show so easy and fun but most importantly gave the time and space to explore each character individually, which was undoubtedly the show's biggest strength. It demonstrated the point that “blackness is not a monolith” and how class, gender, sexual orientation and skin colour all intersect with race. The sharp note of humour is never missing when the characters are getting explored, nor is the sense of fun and freedom expressed. It allows the show to go beyond a gloom narrative of back oppression, however, later on we do get the devastating Barry Jenkins-directed "Chapter V", a standout episode that changed the focus of the second half of the season to a police brutality incident. It was a timely moment handled with care and respect, and though there are a couple of minor flaws elsewhere, Dear White People remains a confident, assured debut season. Wicked Posted December 27, 2017 Posted December 27, 2017 I hope to **** that DWP doesn't turn a mess in its 2nd season
Navyofbadgals Posted December 27, 2017 Posted December 27, 2017 RaM I don't really see how it was the weakest szn, especially considering it has my fav episode of the series
montrealxo Posted December 27, 2017 Posted December 27, 2017 Rick and Morty and Dear White People I still need to watch that Amazon show. i'll watch it when I finish The Tick
Maddox Posted December 28, 2017 Posted December 28, 2017 Yas @ Mrs Maisel Rachel Brosnahan needs to win all the awards! Tessa Thompson was the better Sam imo but anyway i'm perched for the 2nd season
Playa Playa Posted December 29, 2017 Author Posted December 29, 2017 (edited) Jay-Z - 4:44 Quote 20. Leaning on a sample from Hannah Williams & the Affirmations' soulful “Late Nights & Heartbreak”, “4:44” vacuum packs the visceral emotion of the original into something even more tighter and tense, converting it into an open apology letter to wife Beyoncé. Jay strips away his characteristic bravado and opens about his immaturity and infidelity. The song was recorded in the middle of the night which comes across clearly in Jay's conviction and when he decides to sometimes abandon rhyming entirely to just bare his soul. Spoiler Moses Sumney - Quarrel Quote 19. From its quiet keyboard sounds to its delicate harp to its brilliant crescendo of bass, strings, drums, a piercing synth line and jazz-tinged piano outro, “Quarrel” is an absolute stunner–a soaring, experimental fantasia, all brought together under the strain of Moses Sumney's pristine vocals and harmonies. Lyrically, Sumney reflects on how social structures influence and characterize interpersonal relationships. Spoiler Arca - Desafío Quote 18. “Desafío” is mildly ambitious in that it seems to arise from a state of queer deviance, an outright display of violence and eroticism and the complicated nature of queer sexuality, but it’s also one of Arca's most straightforward compositions. Over warm sirens and synths, he comfortably intones lustful demands that combine sensuality and bodily violence in frightening ways. It's a wonderful pop song that's still very much in the idiosyncratic world of Arca. Spoiler Rina Sawayama - Alterlife Quote 17. Newcomer Rina Sawayama has made a huge splash on ATRL's Best of 2017 with her self-titled EP, and this dazzling song about “finding yourself through trying to be other people” was my favourite cut. Aided by Clarence Clarity, “Alterlife” combines sleek pop melodies, bursting synths and amped-up guitars to sound like the soundtrack for a video game about the backdrop of a futuristic revolution. My favourite moment comes with the key change that lacks subtlety to its advantage. Spoiler Trends & Boylan - Krueger (feat. Riko Dan) Quote 16. Still to be officially released, “Krueger” is one of the hardest, terrifying affairs on this list. Over some of Trent & Boylan's most threatening production to date, and accompanied by sampled sections from the “A Nightmare on Elm Street” films, Riko Dan blesses the riddim with his yardie-styled flow that only adds to the song’s frantic dread. It is this year's best grime moment. Spoiler Edited December 29, 2017 by Playa Playa
