ATRL Moderator Unoriginal Posted December 16, 2017 Author ATRL Moderator Posted December 16, 2017 UNORIGINAL'S BEST OF 2017 2017's 50 Best Singles 30 - 26 #30 Jessie J - Think About That Another unexpected comeback single that went down an entirely different route to what I was expecting the artist to go down. Think About That details the struggles Jessie went through with her previous management as well as her own inner personal struggles during her previous era. It's an incredibly powerful song with fascinating production that leans into R&B territory, a genre I think Jessie could fit into really well if she stuck with it for her upcoming album. listen here #29 Sufjan Stevens - Wallowa Lake Monster Admittedly and shamefully, I've never 100% gotten into Sufjan despite him theoretically being right up my alley. When this song popped up in my Discover Weekly a little while ago, however, I was instantly captivated. To put it as simply as possible, everything about this song is stunning and beautiful. The production succeeds with its foundations built in delayed gratification as opposed to instantly bombarding you with everything; as each chorus unfolds, a new layer of production is uncovered and the lyrics continue Sufjan's winning streak of combining Oregon homestate tales and incredibly dark, personal lyrics. To top everything off, the song's outro is nothing short of flooring. listen here #28 Harry Styles - Sign of the Times Despite Harry having referenced many older artists as some of his influences and inspirations whenever I saw something about him related to it, a glam-rock inspired, nearly 6 minute long epic was not the lead single I was expecting Harry to come out with; I doubt many people were expecting it in all honesty but it was a brilliant way to introduce the world to solo Harry. The influences felt ranged from David Bowie to Queen to Pink Floyd in their most epic moments with an explosive chorus that I wouldn't have expected in the slightest. Styles' willingness to come straight out of the radio fodder of One Direction to a song that ignored a majority of the radio trends that have dominated 2017 needs to of course also be commended. listen here #27 Tove Lo - Disco T!ts Lady Wood was one of 2016's best albums so I was highly anticipating Tove's 2017 return with the promised second instalment of the era, Blue Lips. Most of the year came and went without much from Tove except for a live performance of Struggle so when Disco T!ts came out I was surprised to say the least but - above all - excited. Blue Lips' lead single definitely didn't disappoint and on first listen I was confident I preferred it to most of Lady Wood (I've since repented). The song lives up to the 'disco' in its name with glossy, trance-y production that was as perfectly polished as I'd come to expect from Tove. The lyrics are without a doubt a bit absurd and neither the most appealing nor the best of the year but that's ultimately the point of the song. If people don't like it, Tove'll do it more. Disco T!ts proved that incredibly well with everything from the lyrics to the music video (which I don't want to go into in detail because I didn't want this list to be a MVs list) and whilst it certainly isn't a Cool Girl, it's still cute next to cool. listen here #26 Rina Sawayama - Cyber Stockholm Syndrome Cyber Stockholm Syndrome isn't even RINA's highpoint and it's nothing short of incredible. Rina is amazing in that she's able to blend together so flawlessly current issues with the internet, social perception and personal opinion on one's self with production that so strongly and powerfully recalls the early 2000s. Equally, though, on Cyber Stockholm Syndrome, Rina manages to sound futuristic and advanced, which in a way was the 2000s industrial-pop production sound aim. Mixing relatively dark lyrics with the bouncy, future-nostalgic production effortlessly and amazingly effectively earns Cyber Stockholm Syndrome a very deserved high place on this list. listen here top 25 tomorrow. whew.
Remmy Posted December 16, 2017 Posted December 16, 2017 Jessie J hasn't interested me at all this era. Probably not even gonna bother listening to the album. Disco Tots Sign of the Times Both snapped with their underappreciated lead singles, whew!
theblackestday Posted December 16, 2017 Posted December 16, 2017 Sign of the Times is fantastic indeed
