ATRL Moderator Unoriginal Posted December 15, 2017 Author ATRL Moderator Posted December 15, 2017 10 minutes ago, Unoriginal said: UNORIGINAL'S BEST OF 2017 2017's 50 Best Singles 40 - 36 #40 DJ Khaled, Rihanna & Bryson Tiller - Wild Thoughts Realistically there's a few things to criticise about this song: Khaled sampled Santana's Maria Maria to the point where it's pretty much just the song's instrumental, screamed his name over it, shouted whatever came to mind and called it a day. That's genuinely all he does on the song. Rih and Bryson, on the other hand, do all the heavy lifting and pull it off amazingly well. This is 2017's true song of the summer imo (I'd call it the definitive song of the summer but that'd be denying Despacito existed which is silly as unfortunate as its existence is); it's raunchy and explicit and filled to the brim with innuendos - BT takes it from implicit to highly explicit in his verse too - and it works effortlessly to create a slinky (this feels like the right word to describe the song and I have no clue why), fantastic summer jam. Rihanna is, of course, the song's clear standout. listen here #39 When I Was Young - MØ This is actually my least favourite song on When I Was Young and probably any other song could've brought MØ up like at least five spots. Even though this is my personal least favourite on the EP, it's undeniably catchy and infectious and kind of a return to form for MØ where I haven't really been a fan of most of her standalone singles. This song - and the EP as a whole (but I'll speak about that later) - sound like the perfect blend between old and new MØ; the drop is insanely catchy and its replayability is crazy. An excellent single from an excellent EP and a welcome return to form imho. listen here #38 When You're Gone - VÉRITÉ Google told me this was the song's single art so correct me if it's wrong. VÉRITÉ was recommended to me by @K$Ellie and @Diarrhoea so I have to thank them because otherwise there's pretty much no way I would've found out about Somewhere In Between. VÉRITÉ tragically also suffers from the 'not my favourite song' curse but this is a great single choice and also a really effective album opener. The subject of the lyrics is something VÉRITÉ addresses excellently on the song and I love the chorus quite a bit too. The instrumental break is great but I do wish the chorus production went in a bit harder personally. listen here #37 Paloma Faith - Crybaby Paloma's lead singles have been pretty good leads into the album in the past but Crybaby was definitely not the route I was anticipating Paloma going down after A Perfect Contradiction but it's a pretty great song and it's a great blend between the political commentary Paloma was aiming for (fragile masculinity in this song for example) with The Architect and a catchy, funky feelgood song. listen here #36 WESLEE - Bathwater I don't really have loads to say about this but that's not necessarily a bad thing. The subtle guitar that comes through occasionally is fantastic, the vocal effects in the chorus (I think it's a vocoder but it might just be a few vocal takes layered? I don't have a very musical ear I can't actually tell which is kinda tragic) are great and the second half of the second verse is also very very good. The way the guitar comes through more and more as the song progresses is brilliant too. Bathwater's just one of those songs I like but can't quite place exactly why that's the case but nevertheless this is a deserved place in the top 50. listen here 35 - 31 are coming imminently too anddddd lemme bump

K$Ellie Posted December 15, 2017 Posted December 15, 2017 Quote VÉRITÉ was recommended to me by @K$Ellie and @Diarrhoea so I have to thank them because otherwise there's pretty much no way I would've found out about Somewhere In Between. Whew legends only It's not one of my favorite VERITE songs but it's good Cry Baby, When I Was Young and Wild Thoughts
theblackestday Posted December 15, 2017 Posted December 15, 2017 Wow you went in on Mr. Khaled you didn't lie tho
TheWayWeWere Posted December 15, 2017 Posted December 15, 2017 Rihanna was flawless in WT vid, song is annoying to me tho When I Was Young love this one and EP was pretty amazing, very excited for album (for 3 years already ) Crybaby it's such a perfect pop song
ATRL Moderator Unoriginal Posted December 15, 2017 Author ATRL Moderator Posted December 15, 2017 UNORIGINAL'S BEST OF 2017 2017's 50 Best Singles 35 - 31 #35 SZA - The Weekend Not my favourite SZA song at all but yeah I kinda prefer it a tiny bit to Love Galore. SZA's been serving the R&B/neo-soul everyone needed in 2017 and The Weekend is just one of the numerous testaments to this on CTRL. ThankGod4Cody's production is so smooth and chill and absolutely perfect for the song. It works so well because every element of the song just feels like it slots together audibly perfectly and the kind-of-a-drop halfway through the chorus is outstanding. SZA's self-harmonies are beautiful in the second verse and the segue at the end of the song kind of goes off too. listen here #34 Goldfrapp - Systemagic One of the highlights on Silver Eye and a single choice I actually won't fault for once. The lyrics are kind of basic but the production is cool and this was undeniably one of my jams when Silver Eye came out. My kinda Goldfrapp (though most Goldfrapps are passable at worst). The instrumental break after the second chorus is great (my vocabulary apparently lacks diverse adjectives but whatever) so yeah I like this quite a fair bit. listen here #33 Dua Lipa - New Rules The better of Dua's two 2017 singles. Still not one of the best on the album despite what ATRL will continue to claim but obviously the better of Dua's two single outputs this year. A nice drop in the chorus and fun lyrics help this to be one of 2017's most deserving and rightful organic worldwide hits. Genesis would've been top fifteen. listen here #32 Charli XCX - Boys Charli's output this year in terms of mixtapes this year has been... far from my cup of tea. Boys, on the other hand, is bubblegum pop greatness. Everything about Boys is executed tremendously well: the production is dreamy and minimally brilliant and Charli's coos of 'boys' in the chorus sound absolutely infatuated with boys. The mood of the song is conveyed perfectly throughout the song and I just adore the mood of innocent obsession the song perfectly captures. For my benefit I'm going to pretend this was all Charli released this year along with Dreamer, 3AM and Out of My Head. listen here #31 Arcade Fire - Everything Now I'll address the song's parent album at a later date so we'll ignore any feelings towards Everything Now as an album at this moment in time. As an introduction into the Everything Now era, however, the title track does a glorious job of feeling euphoric and musically impressive. The ABBA vibes are immense but it works in Arcade Fire's favour and the whole disco-rock thing is pulled off on this particular song very well. Apart from the first couple of lines on which Win's vocals are... something... the vocals are nice and the chorus screams 'stadium chant' which is nice. listen here okay so i'm back on track now. top 30 tomorrow so we're slowly getting to the best of the best. hope this batch of five isn't too tragic
theblackestday Posted December 15, 2017 Posted December 15, 2017 Love Galore >>>> The Weekday Luv New Rules even if it’s pretty overrated on ATRL (pretends to be shocked)
