ATRL Moderator madonnas Posted December 30, 2017 ATRL Moderator Posted December 30, 2017 YezsssS! Annie in the same place as me I agree with your assessment, though idk how much more pop it is than St. Vincent cause some of the songs have weirder structures than in s/t but I guess some moments are catchier.

ATRL Moderator Unoriginal Posted December 30, 2017 Author ATRL Moderator Posted December 30, 2017 UNORIGINAL'S BEST OF 2017 2017's 20 Best Albums 5 - 1 #2 Fleet Foxes Crack-Up I knew from first listen this was something special. From the moment I Am All That I Need... explodes just over a minute in, the production is layered, detailed, textured and just generally glorious. Robin Pecknold's lyrics are similarly detailed and layered; there are references spanning back as far as Ancient Egypt and across a huge range of mythology and other stories. The moods are dramatic and stormy and the list of instruments used is startlingly expansive. Every single one feels as if its place is more than earned. Crack-Up expands on the pure folk sounds of its two predecessors and explores more experimental, orchestral elements of their music on songs such as Third of May and I Am All That I Need to stunningly effective results. The outros on some of the songs sample other songs, venturing into jazzy territory (On Another Ocean) whilst others take their time to develop and unfold in a suitably tense and dramatic manner; Cassius, for example, dedicates its last minute to a slowly building instrumental that gorgeously melts into Cassadies, arguably Crack-Up's most mellow, laid back moment coming straight after one of the most tense songs that deals with the issue of police brutality and racism. The themes of Pecknold's lyrics are modern, current and relevant despite their references (Cassius being Cassius Clay, better known as Muhammad Ali) and reveal something new on every listen. The instrumentation does this too as it glides and jumps along, the disjointed mood sometimes created by the sudden changes in tempo and even entire instrumentation feeling (and being) entirely intentional. Every song justifies its place on the album and its length and the album doesn't feel like a slog even at nearly an hour long. Put simply, Crack-Up is an immensely special album to me and was the first album to stun me as much as it did in a long time. I wouldn't hesitate to put it close to the top of a list of my favourite albums ever and it, along with Pure Comedy and my #1 album of 2017, helped to make this year a special year for folk music, ranging from the experimental to the pure folk, and helped Crack-Up earn its place as a truly flawless album from Fleet Foxes and one of 2017's best by a wide, wide margin. ATRL Moderator Unoriginal Posted December 30, 2017 Author ATRL Moderator Posted December 30, 2017 (edited) UNORIGINAL'S BEST OF 2017 2017's 20 Best Albums 5 - 1 #1 Susanne Sundfør Music for People in Trouble If you want to read my 539 word essay of a writeup for my favourite album of 2017, it's in the spoiler below. It's not been proofread because I know I'll want to delete it if I do that so it's there for you to read if you want it. Spoiler The top two albums of the year for me were, and still are, incredibly far ahead of everything else released in 2017. The question for me was which order to put them in the top two; I was honestly debating it right up until I posted the writeup for Crack-Up. In a way, the top two is an exploration of opposites of sorts: whereas Crack-Up is a very maximal album in instrumental and lyrical content, Sundfør proves that, equally, less is sometimes just as much as more. Music for People in Trouble is a drastic departure from the primarily electro/synth/experimental pop of 2015's Ten Love Songs, though even on that there were hints of a more stripped back sound on highlights like Silencer. The songs on Music for People in Trouble are stripped back and instrumentally minimal whilst retaining the full extent of the power they can hold and convey in a song. Some songs are backed by little more than a piano (No One Believes in Love Anymore) before Sundfør's vocals melt away to leave the instruments to close the song out; at times, the outros can take up as much as half of a song's length and with good reason. On the topic of lyrics, and to quote @ultraviolence.xx (in his writeup for Big Thief's Capacity), 'the lyrics here sound less like lyrics and more like stunning, precisely crafted poems delivered through top lines.' It's truly a marvel to hear the simplicity of Sundfør's lyrics carrying the emotional weight that they manage to. Most songs don't even have a chorus here and instead work on a base that makes the verses feel like stanzas. The Sound of War, one of the album's ten standout songs, has six verses that all follow the same structure but all carry their own heavy, emotionally dark weight that effectively and crushingly convey the despair and desolation Sundfør wants the listener to feel before the lyrics menacingly give way to a dark soundscape backed by muffled gunfire, the sounds of drones and eerie synths. It's simply stunning and the darkness of it leads into one of the album's lighter moments, an answer to the question 'what would you say to someone who has given up on life?' on the title track. The acoustic instrumental that follows the answer is gorgeous and is one of the few hopeful moments on an album with lyrics such as 'I'm as empty as the earth', 'well maybe that's where our love ends up // no holy grail, just an empty cup' and 'what is love but a frail little dreamcatcher?' The album is emotionally soul crushing yet so hopeful at the same time and the haunting John Grant feature on closer Mountaineers feels aptly atmospheric. Music for People in Trouble is a masterwork of an album that feels timeless little more than three months after its release. It didn't deserve this tragic messay (mess + essay get it?) of a writeup but I could gush about it for hours so I'll conclude by saying that Susanne Sundfør, through juxtaposing despair and hope so subtly and effectively and creating a virtually perfect album, ultimately came out on top of all the competition with my favourite album of 2017. Highlights - Mantra, Reincarnation, Good Luck Bad Luck, The Sound of War, Music for People in Trouble, Bedtime Story, Undercover, No One Believes in Love Anymore, The Golden Age, Mountaineers listen to my favourite album of 2017 here Edited December 30, 2017 by Unoriginal
