Just a Gay on ATRL Posted December 18, 2017 Posted December 18, 2017 Dua and Tove's albums were very good!
shelven Posted December 18, 2017 Posted December 18, 2017 HFK Tbh I wasn't that impressed with Blue Lips when I first listened to it, but I'm definitely going to give it another listen soon.
Mark Rih Posted December 18, 2017 Author Posted December 18, 2017 (edited) So far: HM: Kehlani - SweetSexySavage #20: Demi Lovato - Tell Me You Love Me #19: Taylor Swift - Reputation #18: The Chainsmokers - Memories...Do Not Open #17: Astrid S - Party's Over #16: Allie X - CollXtion II #15: Lil Uzi Vert - Luv Is Rage II #14: Sabrina Claudio - About Time #13: Zara Larsson - So Good #12: Lana Del Rey - Lust For Life #11: Kendrick Lamar - DAMN. #10: Harry Styles - Harry Styles #9: Dua Lipa - Dua Lipa #8: Tove Lo - Blue Lips #7: Kelela - Take Me Apart #6: Halsey - Hopeless Fountain Kingdom TOP 20 ALBUMS #5 - #1 #5 Khalid – American Teen Lately I’ve seen a bit of hate for him on ATRL and I don’t get why exactly. Khalid is my fave newbie of this year and this album is exactly what a young mainstream act should do in 2017 (well, imo at least): chill R&B-pop catchy tunes and careless lyrics. It's a great album to play in many occasions, and I still have to get tired of it, probably because I slowly discovered it during the year. Standouts: Location, Saved, Coaster, American Teen. #4 Calvin Harris – Funk Wav Bounces Calvin has always been my fave mainstream DJ, I liked him since his debut and then I fell in love with him with We Found Love for obvious reasons; last year, after the release of My Way, I thought for the first time that he was running out of ideas and that his decline was coming; I couldn’t have been more wrong. With Funk Was Bounces Calvin completely reinvented his sound following the current music trends but also never forgetting about his past, because you can still his classic input all over the album; the productions are fun and funky and with the help of an impressive amount of first quality features he gave me the perfect LP for my summer. The only negative thing: the best tracks are the singles, and we heard them all before the album release. (but luckily this wasn’t another So Good/Dua Lipa situation since the album was released at the right time). Standouts: Slide, Rollin, Feels, Faking It. #3 The xx – I See You I generally don’t use indie music that much but The xx are an exception, I always check their material out. The first time I played I See You was during a long road trip at night back in January, and I fell immediately in love with it and since then I never abandoned it. The album is full of captiving melodies that do not fail to get stuck in your head and create a beautiful atmosphere, Jamie did an amazing job. If you like dreamy electronic/indie songs you’ll probably love this record. Standouts: Replica, Lips, Say Something Loving. #2 Drake – More Life So after the huge success but mixed reactions of Views, Drake decided to come back with this ‘playlist’ to show that he’s still able to deliver quality, and he did that because this is his best work of the last few years imo. Take Care wasn’t topped obviously, but with More Life Aubrey proved all his versatility; he’s great at doing pop, R&B, rap, hip-hop, basically whatever he wants. The first part of the playlist is my favourite (pop/dancehall Drake) but the second one (which is more hip-hop) is good too, maybe it has a few fillers tho. Standouts: Jorja+Get It Together (a MOMENT in his discography), Passionfruit, Teenage Fever, Portland, Madiba Riddim, Blem. #1 SZA – CTRL Talented, brilliant, incredible, amazing, show stopping, spectacular, never the same, totally unique, completely not ever been done before, unafraid to reference or not reference, put it in a blender, **** on it, vomit on it, eat it, give birth to it. Jokes apart, I loved how cohesive and personal was this album; I generally don’t like spoken parts but the snippets of the conversation with her mother were very nice. The general sound of CTRL is everything, it's alternative R&B but it's still very accessible; it reminded me of ANTI a bit and this is probably one of the reasons why I liked it so much. Easily my most played album of the year. Standouts: The Weekend, Prom, Drew Barrymore, 20 Something (fume @navyofbadgals) --- This is everything for albums. Top 50 singles starting tomorrow/wednesday, we'll see. Edited December 18, 2017 by Mark Rih
