I had a lot of expectations for Xiu Xiu's album but I didn't like it. As for albums I do like, I see Feel Infinite and Boo Boo. Sadly, none of them got too much replay value, so I don't think I'll place them on my lists.

The Assassination of Julis Caesar

 

 

So this used to be like a dark gothic metal band, and then they went synthpop with this release.  It's sort of if Depeche Mode took a different career path after their prime was over and they went dark and abstract instead of more poppy/sassy.  Overall it gets a bit repetitive but there are some great musical moments especially the two longest songs, they're journeys!  Their vocal delivery isn't obnoxious or overwrought, it's just dramatic and believable enough!

AOA - Angel's Knock

 

 

This Kpop placement is basically me just confessing my love for the group.  They're probably my favorite modern Kpop girl group.  Uhm, it has at least 5 BOPS so its a good kpop album.  The title track isn't even the best song, Feeling is!

however i felt like the album was a step-down from their EP's. it had too much filler for my taste. but Melting Love, Excuse Me, & Bing Bing are too damn great that i dont blame you for just listing the whole album all together

Anna of the North - Lovers

 

Anna of the North gives us sad girl synthpop that does has a hint of optimism and hope in it.  I'm struggling to say much about this album though, to be honest.  It's catchy and a few of the songs have really amazing hooks.  It's really so low because I KNOW it's nothing new or groundbreaking and it doesn't even try to be.  But Fire and Someone, well, they just speak for themselves, and the rest isn't bad at all.

Fire had interesting production/instrumentals but Someone has the better melody/writing.

Blanck Mass - World Eater

 

Instrumental electronic albums are actually really hard for me to listen to for some reason now, but I really tried to get back into them this year (kinda failed ngl).  Anyway this one was really good, Please is my favorite song.  It's "noise" but honestly, very hypnotic, and repetitive without getting too nauseating.  It gave me dystopian but hopeful vibes, if that makes sense.  Like beauty in the shitfest that is our ****ty world rn.  Maybe somebody else can analyze this album better than me lol.

For some reason I can imagine it only as completely amazing or unlistenable, like no in between so maybe I'll listen.

 

AOA are fantastic, easily my favourite of the younger groups too. Excuse Me and Feeling are definitely among its strongest but honestly the only thing that felt totally unnecessary was the boring closer.

someone was actually super decent an all, it made me chill a bit, it's perfect for you know when you smoke weed, but then, friends was also gr8 but it really have dull moments. tho i could see myself bringing back to this, maybe it needs time.

Yeah its not like its groundbreaking or necessary lol but still a good album that is useful for more than one listen

I welcomed Ulver into their pop era even tho I like their ambient/metal past as well. Blanck Mass had a great year.
