So far in 2019, total plays of the U.S. Spotify top 10 have actually slightly declined from 2018. Total top 200 plays have grown but at a much more modest rate than they did during this period last year:

If you break it down, January and February were decent but March and April were not. The top 10 was at 2017 levels in March and below them in April (though April '17 was a particularly huge month because of DAMN.):

 

 

Of course, the big caveat here is that we've had no major rap releases so far this year. But I doubt we return to the growth rates of 2017 because the market is far more saturated now & AM is much stronger than it was then. Also, note the other big trend here: the growth is coming from the bottom of the chart, not the top. Long-term trend is towards growth due to better longevity of hits, NOT due to higher and higher peaks.

@alexanderao Great data, and it matches what I remember from watching the charts closely during Delicate's run in the top 50 on Spotify  in Spring 2018 - the Spotify charts don't look any stronger than they were a year ago.

 

Does anyone know what the total growth in users has been from 2018 to 2019?

 

I wonder if in addition to better longevity for current hits, the increases in streaming activity have also gone to smaller non-charting new songs, and to older songs. We now have 8 songs from the 20th century and 10 songs from the 00s that have over 500 million streams and it feels like those aren't slowing down.
