- 17% of all streams are from personalized, algorithmically generated playlists (Discover Weekly, Release Radar, etc.)

- 15% of all streams are from curated playlists (TTH, Rap Caviar, etc.)

 

The fact that people think curated playlists make or break a song's performance is disappointing. Yes, they can help a lot, depending on the song and playlist. But to say that a song is succeeding because it's on playlists or flopping because it's not is just not accurate.

This basically means an artist has to work hard to make a connection with its listeners by putting out really good music every few months. Of course initially by playlisting aggressively. But when he has established himself, then he can enjoy their patronage like how Ed Sheeran does. That's when people take the initiative to playlist you in their personal playlists. Of course that means you put out mushy generic music.
