Drake, Dre, Weeknd some of its earliest A-list celebs. Most of the exclusives and artist deals were with hip hop artists like Chance, Future, Frank Ocean, Khaled + it being an Apple product helped. A lot of the young hip hop fans naturally moved to where their faves were doing interesting things.

They targeted urban listeners early on, knowing there are enough of them to carry the service to prosperity. But they still need higher levels of engagement from their users. Look at this report from last month: http://www.vertoanalytics.com/verto-index-streaming-music-services/ Apple Music has a larger user base than Spotify, but its users are much less engaged. Part of that has to do with Spotify’s state-of-the-art playlist ecosystem (I think in their SEC filing Spotify stated that around one-fifth of total listening comes from their curated playlists and another one-fifth or so from algorithmically generated personalized playlists) and offers like the Spotify/Hulu bundle. Recently Spotify has begun surveying users over a potential vinyl bundle, too. In short, I think Spotify is really good at engaging its users and that will allow it to keep pace with AM.

It's too confusing
