The playlist always has a lot of "interesting" songs on it, the payola is kinda obvious.

Having Nevermind by Dennis Lloyd as #2 is a very interesting choice. 1950 by King Princess is also getting a lot of promotion for whatever reason.

Those songs have to be pushed by labels. King Princess is apparently a Mark Ronson protegee and the first artist signed to his label, so yea, that's who's paying for her playlist support.

It might not always be that way. Playlist curators are given a lot of leeway in selecting songs, and oftentimes they purposely pick songs that aren't hits because they believe that they will be hits.

I understand that for a lot of playlists, but for a playlist called "today's top hits" it makes no sense that there are so many song that are so far from being a top hit today.

Yeah, I agree that the title is highly misleading. You could debate over whether that is intentional or not, but regardless the playlist is more like a hodgepodge of actual top hits and little-known pop/dance tracks.
