Until it's proven otherwise, I'm much more willing to believe Adele still holds the record. It makes a lot more sense given her debut positions as well as numbers.

Adele is from the UK, and she did 1.3-1.4 M in the US her first day. This is well above Katy, who is obviously from the US. I'm not trying to shade Katy. I'm just questioning the source saying she outdid Adele when the main Spotify sources on record show otherwise. You are right– the sources have no merit. Spotify's own charts show that Adele debuted with more than Katy.

It's just strange that people were reporting that she was and even had figures to support their claim. But I'm sure it'll be clarified eventually. Adele still holds the record in my eyes.
alexanderao Posted February 12, 2017 Posted February 12, 2017 But I have no idea how anyone at Spotify could be so oblivious to send out a press release saying that Katy broke the record. I don't see how that can happen. It's completely inexcusable.

I know there's the Spotify-Katy partnership but surely they wouldn't lie to make it look like the partnership was more fruitful than it actually was. Numbers don't lie.

But somehow, Spotify communicated that info to HDD (otherwise, HDD wouldn't have posted their story about it). And I don't know why whoever sent that info did so or how they were allowed to.

Anyway, I downloaded the archive from 10/20-10/25 and before Hello was released, it shows the #1 position but from 10/23-10/24 Adele is excluded from the list. If that isn't a glitch and they got some cash for a record headline.. #2 was at 3.1M on 10/23, so obviously Adele had more streams. Well, it's clearly something is off.
