Most artists right now are just lazy and think that word of mouth thru a couple of tweets and some fake YouTube views are gonna send their songs to #1. The old generation of popstars would NEVER

Then Taylor Swift has the most promoted single of the year so far. I agree with all your points but the promotion (according to the pre-social media era term) excuse is just not valid anymore. 

And tons of songs have gone #1 with no radio support or social media adverts. Bad and Boujee for instance.

Yeah but still they didn't have to pay radios/streaming services to get success and they didn't perform the song anywhere. That's my point. 

Cardi B is another good example. She just performed the song live once at Wendy Williams back in May or June and the song only really blew up last month. 

Radio and streaming ads are good promo but Taylor had all of that and more, so what that user said remains incorrect

For example everyone has been saying that Havana by Camila has had no promo. While I love the song, it’s been number one on TTH and a few other playlists, also iTunes hot tracks. We should start considering playlist placements promo

Some stats from RIAA on 1st half of 2017:

 

Perhaps the most encouraging news from the RIAA’s figures regards streaming subscriber numbers.

At the end of June this year, there were 30.4m paying subscribers to music services in the US.

That was up 50.6% on the 20.2m paying subs attracted at the end of H1 2016 – and more than three times the figure seen just two years ago (9.1m).

Playlist placements do indeed give exposure. But it's important to note that a lot of the time, labels don't get to control what happens on playlists. There are human playlist curators behind every Spotify-branded playlist (like TTH), and most of the time they're the ones deciding which songs get to be on a playlist (and they look at analytics to determine if the song should stay or be removed from the playlist). So it's not "promo" in the traditional sense because the label isn't in full control of it.

True, but 1-800 is the exception, not the rule. Compared to the iTunes chart, songs really don't tend to see big boosts from TV performances or special events on Spotify, and oftentimes they don't see boosts at all.

And they forgotten how Katy's CTTR jumped from less than 50k to over 100k. Over an 100% jump, well that's definitely no 'impact' from performance and promotion. :coffee:

Yes, performances and things like that don't always yield the same surefire boosts that they used to, but that user was saying that promotion is useless in 2017, when that is not true at all.

 

Another example: Imagine Dragon's Thunder got a big boost from the song being featured in a commercial that aired multiple times during the Emmys just the other night :celestial6:

Post Malone's "rockstar" (Republic) is more than living up to its name, and is on track to surpass the first-week streams of Taylor Swift's "Look What You Made Me Do" (Big Machine) and become one of the Top 5 streaming debuts of the year. Based on the track's performance at the top-tier streaming services, "rockstar" is set to do some 35m streams.

Taylor's first week saw 29m streams, while Sam Smith's "Too Good at Goodbyes" (Capitol) bowed with 20m streams at the big streameries.

Because of the huge spectacle of the video? Of course! But it looks like people are actively dropping the song on streaming, which usually foreshadows how a song will perform on other platforms :/

But that isn't what you said, you said people weren't checking for her anymore on streaming, and the video counts as streaming.
