There have been MANY examples of this being a false notion. Sams next era is not a sure fire success at all. Its not like he's a huge popstar personality the public will easily remember. He has to deliver great music to get the publics attention. Unlike a few artists who get away with any ole rubbish but their superstar profile still has fans rushing out in droves to buy. Not you again. People like me? Listen dude, pop girls have been over for all of 2017. Men have dominated. If I were betting on an Oscar and Grammy winning man to pull an Ed Sheeran or a Lorde with his followup release, I would put all my money on the guy pulling an Ed Sheeran. There was no indication that Sam had taken a career hit that would cause him to flop. I never witnessed any #samsmithisoverparties and his music is being well received. Again, all things were working in his favor. Adele is the only artist in RECENT years to win an Oscar and we all saw how great her comeback was after that win. So more proof Sam would never pull a Lorde. I am totally NOT surprised by his success. It actually has tons of room to grow. Edited September 9, 2017 by SilverSky
Rentboy Posted September 9, 2017 Posted September 9, 2017 (edited) You seem obsessed with the notion that Oscars mean something to music fans. Er no, they really do not. Even Grammys are not hovering over peoples minds when deciding if they like somebodies music still. I doubt 90% of the GP even remember they have any. So get over the awards obsession. Nobody cares. I said this exact same thing yesterday, essentially (excluding male/female, he was coming back strong regardless). Multiplatinum debut, Oscar/Grammys, multiple top ten hits. Album had/has great longevity. Tour was a major success. He built a stable fanbase, including pushing every single song heavily to adult urban audiences. Why certain people act like he was destined to potentially fail is beyond me. Did I miss something? He's a safe act with a great voice who built a strong support. He was always going to be the hot item for the Winter. His label was going to make sure of that. Hell, he was going to make sure of it by staying completely in his lane. The same 3 people argue for the sake of it honestly, even when they're being illogical/backtracking/hypocritical. You know them, just start ignoring them like everyone else who wants to peacefully visit this section LOL. Edited September 9, 2017 by Rico Shameless v2
freddisier Posted September 9, 2017 Posted September 9, 2017 sam was not going to pull a lorde for many very valid reasons people have mentioned above. also one of the biggest reasons is that his music is very mainstream cookie cutter pop, while lorde is indie and very very unlikely to ever have a huge crossover hit again, like royals. he was expected to do well if he serves what people expect of him, a typical sam smith sad ballad. some people were just not sure how he would perform in the heavy streaming age cos the music industry landscape has changed a lot, but apparently he has transitioned himself very well with streaming.

A song with drastic change in tempo and a very odd structure is not generic pop and certainly, not GP friendly.

Starkboy Posted September 9, 2017 Posted September 9, 2017 It is and it flopped Alessia being the only female on Spotify top3. What a HITMAKER
Rentboy Posted September 9, 2017 Posted September 9, 2017 (edited) John Legend is known for ballads. He is ten times more famous than Sam. He recently had a huge era with a massive global smash. Oh, and he won that important precious oscar in 2015. And has ten Grammys. So I guess he ticks all the boxes Sam ticks. And then some. But his last album debuted at #14 and sold 26k in pure sales in 2016. Just saying. Logic doesnt always apply in music. Sams success in streaming & sales is incredible and you will not downplay it by acting like it was just automatically expected. Edited September 9, 2017 by Rentboy
NoMythologies Posted September 9, 2017 Posted September 9, 2017 I swear... generic has become the cop out criticism for music people don't like.

If you followed US charts closely, you would see how Sam's singles didn't really smashed as, for example, "Royals" did for Lorde. Moreover, "Stay With Me" was blocked by Magic's "Rude", which even got to top the Hot100 without being #1 on any component So that tells you how week was "Rude" during its reign. Besides, Sam strongest point during the Lonely Hour era was radio, not streaming. And to further prove you wrong, you say this is the year of males and then you go on with comparing him to Ed Sheeran, well, first of all, Sam is an openly gay man, so he doesn't receive the same reception as the other men that have dominated this year, and secondly, Sheeran has released more albums and way more singles than Sam, so he is far better established. But, I understand your distressed about Taylor not being #1 anymore on Spotify or iTunes, therefore your defensiveness. If Cardi is releasing in October, then Bodak has still a lot of room to grow on Spotify
NoMythologies Posted September 9, 2017 Posted September 9, 2017 Taylor fell quite a bit on YouTube on Wednesday so it looks like the race for streaming #1 is now on. Per YouTube insights (9/6) 1. LWYMMD - 3,288,515 2. BY - 2,998,443 8. 1-800-273-8255 - 1,349,087 BY could be #1 on streaming next week but it all depends on how Taylor stabilizes on YouTube. Logic is still down a ways on YouTube but could be #1 for on-demand streaming as early as next week. The video is definitely on an upwards trend tho so it'll be interesting to see how these 3 songs hold up. LWYMMD still has a significant sales advantage (still 2:1 to Logic) and radio advantage, so Taylor still seems to have a pretty firm grasp on BB #1.
