Here's the proof that they still use 1:100 for certifications: Quote At the halfway point of 2017, Shape Of You – one of Ed's double single release ahead of his third album ÷ back in January - leads the way with a massive 2.6 million shifted across all formats. 72% of that figure is streaming equivalent sales (184 million plays), while 28% is digital downloads (717,000), making Shape Of You both the biggest selling song of 2017 so far and sets a new record for the UK’s most streamed song of all time, overtaking Drake’s One Dance. The second of Ed’s ÷ releases, Castle On The Hill, is the second biggest song of the year to date, with 1.5 million equivalent units sold, made up of 455,000 downloads and 105m streams. http://www.officialcharts.com/chart-news/the-official-top-40-biggest-songs-of-2017-so-far__18652/

I guess the UK was always a fast paced, easily manipulated chart so the sudden stability based on actual public consumption had em shook idk if u already know this stuff but imma say it anyway— basically, in the UK, they had a bit of a chart culture for decades, with shows like top of the pops that were great promo for acts. the chart's instability let that culture flourish. even though such shows have vanished for the most part, UK music sites seemed to still celebrate chart culture and whatnot and then streaming became popular and the chart stop being so unstable. for example, for years before 2015, labels would release a song to radio first and then wait for like six months to actually release the song in hopes of maximising sales and getting a huge debut. that's why the UK had so many goddamn #1 songs every year that flew down the charts and had legit no longevity this practise ended once the IFPI made friday a global standard date now that streaming happened and it actually shows what people are still listening to, the OCC is SHOOK and now they're bogging down the charts with all of these rules. I mean, they haven't even added video streams to their charts tl;dr— streaming brought some UK chart stability and it made the OCC shook. the only factors on the songs charts are streams and sales and they managed to **** that up, even WITHOUT airplay which moves slower than sales and streams. fridayteenage Posted August 6, 2017 Posted August 6, 2017 i caught up a bit. young dumb and broke is more okay than butterfly effect and bank account. probably won't remember any of them
Cheetos Posted August 6, 2017 Posted August 6, 2017 So streaming has not caught up to sales yet? The number one song is averaging how many streams a week? When sales used to do 300k, 400k regularly? I'm not criticizing I'm wondering.

That is, the total number of units being earned by songs is on the rise: Despacito is a very strong streaming #1 right now and has been doing 55-65 million streams per week. Usually 40 million is enough for #1 though. Here are some screenshots from Nielsen reports illustrating the decline of sales (scroll through): Here is the Hot Digital Songs chart for this week. If you compare those numbers to some from 2012 or 2013 the decline becomes even more apparent.
