The article is referring to their new "Sponsored Songs" feature. You can read about it here. Many people have surmised that labels can pay Spotify to guarantee placement of songs on their popular playlists, though this has not been proven and Spotify vehemently denies such accusations and alleges that it independently curates its playlists.

not exactly. you have those couple megapopular playlist but if you as you created playlist "my tunes" and somehow that playlist will get like 100k subscribers than spotify paid by label can put a song into your playlist

I really have no idea how that "Popular" section works, and I wouldn't read too much into it. Swish Swish is currently #47 on the WW chart while BA is #92, so the latter definitely isn't her most popular track right now.

I always thought it was to do with relative plays in the past 7-day period (updated daily). Could be wrong tho. Maybe playlists factor in too? Idk.

 

Oh well, a #1 peak is a #1 peak.
