I think toxic masculinity is kinda to blame. Women can listen to male and female issues without an issue but men "can't" really listen to female musicians without feeling like they're being emasculated. Straight men are weird. Urban music is dominating right now. Having grown up around such an environment, I'll say it really is part of the problem cause the audiences that predominantly stream urban music do have hyper-masculine issues. It's a deep-rooted issue into the culture. It'll be a while before the tide turns again. It won't go the other way as easily like a lot of people are expecting or hoping. Hip-hop/rap/trap has pretty much always been popular. Their demographics have always pirated the music though. With them now streaming, we're seeing just how big it is. It's crazy.
bjnono001 Posted June 15, 2017 Posted June 15, 2017 It's weird because we had "Dark Horse", "Fancy" and "All About That Bass" dominate streaming back in 2014, and more recently "Hello" and "Work", so I don't know what changed with streaming.

Well, it's certainly plausible that the first cohort to embrace streaming was not representative of the general public with regards to their taste. More specifically, perhaps there were a disproportionate amount of pop listeners among the early adopters of streaming services. While this is a distinct possibility, I don't have a hypothesis as to why this might be. I wish we could access the demographics of those who began to stream in 2013/2014 and compare them to the demographics of those who began to stream last year or this year.

FanOfPop Posted June 16, 2017 Posted June 16, 2017 "Believer"'s jumps on Spotify these last few days are really impressive.
Blue Rose Posted June 17, 2017 Posted June 17, 2017 Apple Music: Wild Thoughts #8 overall Despacito still #1 Attention by Charlie Puth still climbing. Believer #13 (Non Urban tracks) Lorde's highest song is Sober at #112 but has 7 songs charting in the top200. She's doing less than Harry Styles on Apple Music. Homemade Dynamite and The Louvre lead the non singles songs. Underwhelming album performance tbh. 2 Chainz is slaying this Urban centric chart with his new album.
