Is AI making people more stupid?

Recommended Posts

I've been observing the internet over the last year and while there's always been a fair share of stupid people, the comment sections are getting dumber and dumber

On any topic

Also there's a lot of people that are not real, which is another problem

This got me thinking about how AI is taking over people's brains, the dependence on chat gpt to even write emails or texts is shocking

I also think chat gpt might be one of the best, if not the best invention of all time but if you are using it to learn stuff.

What do you think?

Wow :clap3:it's so funny because i was literally thinking this exact same thing when my man sent me an obvious AI text asking if i clean my hole before coming over tonight.

Most of them are probably not even actual people. The dead Internet theory keeps making more and more sense as time goes by

For not native speakers , AI is great for reports - emails.

However, I am surprised by how rude are people when write on chatgtp. I am afraid that young people will forget to be polite when they aren't writing with ai.

You know—you may have a point! :cm:

Tbh yes myself included. :skull:

For example, I use it for math sometimes, but in the past I would do the math myself. Same for coding html/css.

But ultimately I don't care. I embrace technology and appreciate being able to get things done faster and having more time to do other things. :foxaylove3:

Gen alpha can't read and now you have AI dumbing everyone down. Double homocide.

Yes. I'm even noticing that people are using it for short and long ATRL posts and even in depth album/song reviews on this website.

Why are you on here if you're using AI unironically?

Not only is it making them more stupid, it's making them more arrogant. They think because their chatbot of choice gave them an answer that they're now researched on a topic. At best, it should be a starting point for your research. Not your entire research process.

Very sad tbh. I still remeber that wave of teachers saying kids weren't reading or writing past a second grade level or something like that :toofunny3:

Of course. Like television and smartphones before. We're doomed.

I think AI, much like the internet, can be useful if applied correctly but children especially have way too much access and yes it's absolutely dumbing kids down and regressing them in terms of critical thinking, problem solving, reading, writing, etc. But this is just an added issue on top of growing up with iPads that scientifically chip away at your attention span of a developing brain. I think the real issue is figuring out why Millennial parents are so lazy, entitled, and uninterested in actually raising their kids. It's always so cringe to see a kid glued to their screen while their parents just ignore them. All of this starts in the home.

As far as boomers...they've been a lost cause and think the most basic photoshopped pics are real :rip:

I have friends that are elementary and middle school teachers and they say the same thing. We're now seeing the effects of covid and you have education being gutted in the US + AI. Triple homocide. :deadbanana:

YES

and AI will get dumber because of so much dumb **** is being inputted aswell

Yes, there was an article about how it's completely screwing up college-level education, and it's of course also affecting compulsory education:

https://nymag.com/intelligencer/article/openai-chatgpt-ai-cheating-education-college-students-school.html

If it goes unchecked, I genuinely think we could face a societal collapse (once an entire generation is raised on ChatGPT and can't live without relying on it), not to mention the environmental impact of it all.

There is an irony in a tool about intelligence that has actually dramatically increased misinformation online tho. This is the next generation of Facebook Boomers 😆

Oh no no no

I'm not gonna get framed as a "boomer" just because I'm making a human observation

I'm not gonna accept everything corporations throw at us

Also I'm literally married to chatgpt but I use it to learn music theory, astronomy research( which it has its flaws but is still helpful) and prepare my nutritionist meals.

Chatgpt has actually increased my brain activity and productivity but most people use it the wrong way

I think schools need to teach how to use AI responsibly and also media literacy

The levels of misinformation this decade are absolutely insane

Yeah people are becoming TOO reliant on AI. I only use it to make lesson plans :rip:

Kind of a related point though no? Millennials are the ones who got iPhones and iPads and whatever first, and the algorithms worked as they were designed to fry the dopamine centers of our brains and get us hooked. Raising kids well is unbelievably hard & demanding, and now with parents who are more isolated than ever without being able to rely on in-person communities the way previous generations did, they have to use technology to get any semblance of a life for themselves. It's way too widespread a problem to even address. I hate to sound like the people of r/collapse but like... where else could this lead.

Ehh it's not as simple as making an "ok boomer" statement. I get the joke, but television and even smartphones alone couldn't just think for you and HEAVILY aid you in every facet of human communication and task productivity.

AI will have a more negative on younger generations who will never know a world without it, and thus won't be required to use their brains nearly as much as their predecessors. I can imagine it will make them even poorer leaders (lol as if that's possible) and will most likely create a general consensus of people that can't solve any of their problems, no matter how small or simple, without AI assisting them in some way, shape, or form. The younger generations will be completely dependent on it like a diabetes patient is on insulin.

if I were a teacher right now I'd be making those kids WRITE with a pen and paper in class for me. Especially at a university level in the humanities, where you being able to properly formulate an essay and craft a strong argument ON YOUR OWN is at the core of your learning experience. It's really frightening what it's doing to education, like the whole system is basically fried unless they figure out some way to go around AI
