Vermouth Posted Friday at 03:56 PM Posted Friday at 03:56 PM (edited) For those that don't know how the courts work in criminal cases in England and Wales, broadly there are two sorts of courts (ignoring appeal courts etc). Magistrates Court and Crown Court. Magistrates are lay judges drawn from the community (and are called Justices of the Peace or JP's) who do certain number of days per month or year or whatever, and are advised by a legal clerk. They deal with vast majority of cases: Traffic stuff like speeding, most burglaries, drunks etc etc. they can impose prison sentences where appropriate of up to six months per individual charge up to ( I think) a max of twelve months if more than one charge. For stuff that is more weighty, it's taken out of the hands of the magistrates and given to the Crown Court where there are juries of lay people deciding the verdict and professional judges of various ranks presiding, who are drawn from experienced people in the legal profession. This is the world of wigs and robes, and King's Counsels and all that paraphernalia. The Crown Court can really throw the book at you, and for GBH we are usually talking years. So to sum up: sh*t got serious. Edited yesterday at 08:05 AM by Vermouth 1 1

MatiRod Posted Friday at 10:13 PM Posted Friday at 10:13 PM He shouldn't have tried it in the UK. There are countries that would've bent to the pressure of arresting an American celebrity and just kicked him out with a slap on the wrist (remember when Bieber got in trouble in Brazil? Or Paul McCartney in Japan), but not the UK.
May Posted Friday at 10:19 PM Posted Friday at 10:19 PM omg I thought he'd just get a slap on the wrist

slw84 Posted yesterday at 12:28 AM Posted yesterday at 12:28 AM Somehow I'm not upset about this outcome
C_Colstead Posted yesterday at 10:55 AM Posted yesterday at 10:55 AM (edited) I mean... had this been the very first time he'd done something like this, I might have sympathy for him. You could argue if that were the case he could be genuinely remorseful, knows what he did was wrong, and will resolve to never repeat it and truly change. But how many times is this now? The man clearly has anger and violence issues, and in spite of his stans insisting that the Rih incident 16 (!!!) years ago was an isolated case, it very obviously isn't. He needs to be locked up, because it's pretty apparent that he'll continue lashing out like this again, and again, and again. The judge was right to refuse him bail.
