PerfectCure Posted Sunday at 03:21 PM Posted Sunday at 03:21 PM As promised, here is the second thread of the world vs Michael Jackson series. Yesterday, we saw ATRL believing ex-pop singer Rihanna ("California King Bed") has little to no chance at stealing the King of Pop's thunder. However, what about the Music Industry, also known as Taylor Swift? Keep in mind that: • Swift's last studio album debuted with 313 million streams on Spotify. • Swift's last studio album opened with 2.6 million units, whereas the King of Pop's opened with around 366k (Invincible in 2001). • In 2023, Taylor Swift achieved the feature of having 3 #1s from 3 different albums in a single year, an achievement the King of Pop hasn't reached since his Jackson 5 days (in 1970). Therefore, who do you think would go #1 if they released the same week today? Who do you want to see next to Michael tomorrow?

prettyinpink940 Posted Sunday at 03:31 PM Posted Sunday at 03:31 PM America loves pedophiles, so MJ probably. 2 2
Selegend Posted Sunday at 03:34 PM Posted Sunday at 03:34 PM Taylor MJ album would probably be even more stable than her and get both #1s in its 2nd week tho. 1
Vixen Eyes Posted Sunday at 03:41 PM Posted Sunday at 03:41 PM people still have rose tinted glasses with MJ so he would smash

Wicked Posted Sunday at 03:43 PM Posted Sunday at 03:43 PM Michaels release would have so much coverage it would be #1 by default.
Badgalbriel Posted Sunday at 03:50 PM Posted Sunday at 03:50 PM Taylor Swift. Young people would just not care enough for a MJ resurrection and they're the ones who dictate the charts. Not only that, but competion makes Taylor bigger. Swifties would be out there breaking all sorts of records left and right to try and prove she's the biggest artist of all time or something

LosingHimWasBlue Posted Sunday at 03:58 PM Posted Sunday at 03:58 PM Prime MJ can't sell 1.2M+ Copies in first week, let alone 2M++ So the answer is Taylor.
Feanor Posted Sunday at 03:59 PM Posted Sunday at 03:59 PM The Hot 100 #1 would be a close race, but Taylor would most likely get the #1 debut on the 200.
byzantium Posted Sunday at 04:02 PM Posted Sunday at 04:02 PM The majority of the American population (and even more of the music consuming population) was born after MJ's peak so I genuinely would not expect him to do different numbers than that brand new Beatles song they release a couple years ago.

What the hell. Please refrain from making such assumptions without even knowing me.

Loroy Posted Sunday at 05:27 PM Posted Sunday at 05:27 PM Taylor MJ never had insane first-week figures (except for Bad), but he always had amazing longevity on the charts

Strawberry Bubble Posted Sunday at 05:51 PM Posted Sunday at 05:51 PM I just don't understand what this scenario would even look like. Like, are we talking about a world where the news announces "Michael Jackson resurrects tomorrow and drops a new album"? Because if that's the case — he would absolutely obliterate every existing record and make Taylor look like an ant. But if we're imagining a world where Michael never died and is doing what Madonna's doing now (releasing albums past his peak), then yeah… it would be Taylor.
