Desert Eagle, Blow, MOOD 4 Eva + many other moments are tongue in cheek moments that to me are not that different from what Marina is pulling at. If anything Bey constantly focuses on the idea that raunchiness should coexist without invalidating a woman's maturity and elegance. There have been various means through which Marina has shared her less playful side (especially in 2017-19 outside of music) but also when she does include that in the music, people call her trite and overstepping her pop star bounds. Again, we can focus on specific missteps (I'm still not sold on the pitched vocals on Butterfly) without trying to rewrite the quirkiness that is at the core of her approach to pop.

What is with the same select few Marina stans being so allergic (and seemingly personally offended) over other people, most of whom are actual fans of her past work, having an opinion that isn't emphatically positive. 
 

This is a forum where people are meant to openly discuss the song the thread is about. There's no requirement that it needs to be conformist to your opinion of the song  It would be one thing if people were being unnecessarily rude but the critiques I'm seeing here are very valid and just a matter of opinion. 
 

Let's unpack why these opinions trigger some of yall so deeply? Is it rly that serious?

I'm honestly still a fan but I think she should evolve and mature. This is why she hasn't been more successful 😵‍💫.

Her debut album's title is an euphemism for a man's balls, and has a single which starts with her chanting "CUCKOO" over a wacky beat over and over again; then her sophomore project is literally a whole epos about the archetypes women have followed through history, and just to give you another example her third record is literally titled "fruit" but misspelled cuz #yolo.

Camp and jarring **** always have been a huge part of Marina's artistic identity and branding no matter how serious the topics of some of her songs were, hell, when she did Love + Fear the whole world rightfully complained about how bland it was for her standards. This actually feels like old Marina, I swear if the current concept of cvnt existed back in 2009 she would've probably done a song called Cuntissimo for TFJ lmfao

THIS! There's room for all kinds of musicians in the industry, and if some people yearn for sophistipop that's completely fine and respectable, but the fake outrage at Marina for being over-the-top and theatrical's always seemed forced to me when she's always been like that. At this point, asking her to change would be like asking Madonna to stop being sex-positive or Mariah to stop doing whistle notes, it's part of their personas, and if it ain't broken why would they need a fix?

So, for years it was fine for Marina threads to be spammed with hate and how trash her music was but the minute someone voices criticism with actual arguments for her recent output everyone jumps at them for being annoying?   This is a public forum and everyone can say what they want, as long as it's not trolling or rampant hating. 

I will agree that so far none of these songs come close to her previous album, which I loved. They are just mediocre or rehashed versions of previous work , like Butterfly which feels like a demo from 2019. I'll just wait and see what's the overall direction for this album because its not very clear yet.

Exactly, the problem is the appease to the slay mama crowd which comes in direct contrast to what she's been doing for the past decade with her music. Marina's essense is her quirkiness and campiness which we all love and made us fans, the need to pull a Katy Perry out of nowhere is what's weird and unnecessary.

If that's what they wanted to say, then they should articulate themselves better. 

 

Personally, I replied only in regards to their maturity notion which also had a subtle hint of ageism ("she was in her twenties, it was ok for her to be silly and ridiculous"). All I said was that maturity is not linear, not one thing, and maturity does not equal self-aware seriousness and self-righteousness. Maturity can also be knowing when to be laid back and speaking about silly stuff which are not profound. Couldn't care less about who likes or dislikes BUTTERFLY or CG or why.
