Madonna, Mariah, Whitney, Janet, Britney, Beyonce, Taylor, and others have been snubbed for acting Oscar nominations despite varying box office receipts. Yet here comes Ariana in her first real Hollywood movie attempt and scores a prestigious acting nomination. Why was she able to do what so many of her predecessors were not? Is it due to her previous acting experience? Better screen charisma? Better acting talent? The right role? Just a fluke? Edited January 24 by ericcartman
gr33dy4Ari Posted January 24 Posted January 24 The people you have mentioned do not have the broadway/acting background that Ariana has. She may have gotten globally popular because of her music, but her roots/training has always started in musical theatre which includes acting performances. It also helps she's been a big fan of Wicked; the familiarity she has with the story, music, and the characters allowed her to shine in the best way possible. The Universe conspired for her this time and deservingly so! 11 2

Minto Posted January 24 Posted January 24 Her past roles have kind of trained her for this and she's broadway adjacent + she's always been passionate about wicked, more so than any pop girl i've seen for a movie role. Not to discredit her either but the oscar competition this year was quite weak so that also factors into it. Overall, a culmination of many things.

She was always a singer first and singing is how she ended up in acting. She started doing musical theater so she could have opportunities to sing on stage as a kid. She started working professionally as a child actress because they told her she was too young to do music/get a record deal and to book acting jobs in the meantime. Besides almost all of her acting gigs involve music/singing (Broadway, Victorious, Don't Look Up, Hairspray Live, Wicked). The only ones that didn't involve music was her small role on Scream Queens and Sam & Cat. 2

Comedor Posted January 24 Posted January 24 I can only speak about Beyonce, she never dedicated herself to acting, it was a side hustle for her. She still delivered a great popcorn movie in Obsessed. Love that one.
