MoonGoodandHappy Posted 9 hours ago Posted 9 hours ago (edited) I think it's a coincidence that her songs that recently hit number 1 are all duets. I'm sure if Gaga was alone on this song, it would have been just as successful. By the way, I would have loved a version of the song where Bruno Mars is replaced by Joe Calderone, her alter ego, and he would have been in the music video. I think that Gaga is cursed since 2011. She is so talented and deserves better. Edited 9 hours ago by MoonGoodandHappy 1 1 4
Solaria Posted 9 hours ago Posted 9 hours ago I dunno if it would have been the gigantic smash like it is now, because her and Bruno´s chemistry (both in the song and in the video) definitely helped a TON with it's popularity, but it definitely would not have been a flop either. It would've done much better than Disease. 5
Rico Shameless v2 Posted 9 hours ago Posted 9 hours ago I don't think so. Gaga wouldn't have mastered the melody as it is, just based off of her other ballads, and Bruno is kind of the highlight vocally throughout the track. It works as a duet together.
Sheep Posted 9 hours ago Posted 9 hours ago (edited) Gaga's songwriting is what carried it, not a coincidence every ballad she's ever released as a single became a classic. It's so transparent why a certain base is foaming at the mouth to tear Gaga down over this, some girls make songwriting their whole brand and won't ever have a truly classic ballad outside of their cult. Zaram Posted 9 hours ago Posted 9 hours ago Love ballads with a male & female singer are just easier to be mega smashes. DWAS would be solo also a hit but not the mega smash hit which it is rn 1
Loca Posted 8 hours ago Posted 8 hours ago (edited) The song only works as a duo so no Edited 8 hours ago by Loca 1
Havoc Posted 8 hours ago Posted 8 hours ago We will see if she can get a solo smash on LG7 then. 1 11 2
Erreur2 La Nature Posted 8 hours ago Posted 8 hours ago DWAS is a cute song but it 100% sounds like a Bruno Mars song. I think it could have done fine if it was just Gaga but certainly not as big as it currently is. Let's be real, the fact Bruno's on it and that it's a male/female duet is helping a lot.
kimberly Posted 8 hours ago Posted 8 hours ago yes, you're the only one. DWAS probably, realistically, wouldn't have worked with either Gaga or Bruno solo. Gaga's role is pretty much interchangeable whereas Bruno is integral to the song and its success, though. 9 5
Dear Reader Posted 8 hours ago Posted 8 hours ago I pray that one day this forum and the stan world in general will drop the word "solo" out of their vocabulary. It doesn't matter if a smash is a solo song or not. a smash is a smash 3 1 3
R.E.M. Posted 8 hours ago Posted 8 hours ago To answer this question, you would have to look at Gaga's track record for solo singles in the last few years: Disease: #27 Happy Mistake: N/A Hold My Hand: #49 It's not unreasonable to think that the success of this collaboration is bolstered by the fact that this is Bruno's first non-Silk Sonic 'comeback' single since 2016. This doesn't minimize Gaga's contributions or talent, but to act like the collaboration didn't benefit from being a collab is moronic. 16 minutes ago, Sheep said: Gaga's songwriting is what carried it, not a coincidence every ballad she's ever released as a single became a classic. Gaga is a legend and absolutely has nothing to prove, but it's this type of hyperbole that gets her base dragged 4 5 6 1 2
DiamondHoe Posted 8 hours ago Posted 8 hours ago I think the song would've been a hit for sure. But not to the same extent Boy/Girl love duets are often big classics Islands in the Stream, Don't Go Breaking my Heart, Shallow, etc.

In my opinion, a hit is a hit but if a certain fanbase formerly set a precedent that only solo hits matter, then they should stand firm in their stance 4 2 3 2
Katamari Posted 8 hours ago Posted 8 hours ago I was so confused at the responses in this thread until I realized the thread was not about DWUW 1
loveisdead9582 Posted 7 hours ago Posted 7 hours ago I mean, I think it still would have done well but it wouldn't have worked as well if either artists did it solo.
Red Velvet Posted 7 hours ago Posted 7 hours ago It would have been bad. I think she mentioned Bruno wanted to sing a very particular way for the record so she did. If she didn't have that guidance she would have done some grating vocals she likes to do recently.
Material Girl Posted 7 hours ago Posted 7 hours ago no, it sounds like a bruno song the other ballad gaga released this year (happy mistake) flopped to oblivion 1 3
Devin Posted 7 hours ago Posted 7 hours ago if dwas was solely gaga it would have not smash like this. prob top 10 debut with 6 week stability. this is one of those songs that needed a collab. 1
OrgVisual Posted 7 hours ago Posted 7 hours ago It doesn't work because Bruno wrote and came up with the song and Gaga only jumped in and finished it. She tried similar things with Happy Mistakes and the result is day and night 2 4
KingWitch Posted 7 hours ago Posted 7 hours ago Lol people only listen to that song because of Bruno, Gaga should consider herself lucky that Bruno agreed to do it 2 2

Arrows Posted 7 hours ago Posted 7 hours ago The song has Bruno's writing all over it, so it could never exist as a Gaga song.
