What are some songs that you've heard during their peak, but you didn't think were as big as they were?

 

I remember hearing Bad Habits a lot in 2021 but thinking it was some local unknown Canadian flop artist that the radio would spam for quotas. Bad Habits was serving random generic covid-era ballad in the worst way.

 

I also thought the same thing with Big Energy. I heard it a couple of times, but didn't register that it was Latto. Not my ass thinking that it was some new upcoming female rap duo (a la City Girls). Not sure why it sounded like a rap duo at the time. 

 

Another older example would be Best I Never Had in 2009. I heard it often, but it was serving an album deep cut that caught on. I had no idea that it peaked at #2 on the Hot 100

That Heat Waves song, just recently found out that was a number one hit for five weeks?? It's also the only song Glass Animals have ever charted with.

They even made a Simlish version of it for Sims 4 and actually had the lead vocalist as a sim added to the game to perform it.

This is hard to say cause I've been looking at Billboard since I was like 9… 

 

But one that stood out to me the most was seeing that High School Musical's "Breaking Free" peaked at #4 on The Hot 100 when I didn't even know Disney Channel songs could ever peak that high without the support of US radio…

 

Come to find out it ended up being the first song in history to do so lol

I remember seeing it somewhat frequently on MTV when I was a child but not really much outside of that. I was really surprised years down the line when I read about how big it was lol.

How old are you? I was 16 when this song came out and it was EVERYWHERE for a solid year. 
 

OT: Kid Laroi x Stay. I heard it being played now and again. I thought it would've had something like 500 million streams which is still huge. Nope. The song has 3 and a half BILLION.
