The general public is relentless in making jokes about Madonna and her age / looks. However, the older Cher gets, the more she's treated as a legend and celebrated for how she looks at her age.

 

Why has Madonna had to suffer so much worse treatment by the general public than Cher? It's never made much sense.

Madonna continues to toy with sex appeal as she ages, Cher has long since toned that down.

 

Western culture truly does have a problem with women over 40 who still use sex appeal as part of their brand and Madonna has been treated with derision by the media for that.

 

Also society in the 2020's has regressed back to a form of conservatism that has more in common with the 1950's than the 1990's.

 

With that societal regression has come criticism of expressions of sexual freedom/ creativity and Madonna stands out as being out of sync with this return to conservative values that society has now regressed back to.

Honestly it really comes down to Cher being a bit more classy, respectful, and having a way better voice than Madonna. Yes Madonna is still the legend that she is but Cher would never rely on the sex gimmicks that Madonna has been in recent times.

this is just flat out false to the extreme. Cher was extremely controversial back in the day, during the 60s and 70s and for a period in the 80s. Cher herself was a trailblazer for woman in the entertainment industry before madonna ever came along, picked up the mantle and ran with it, pushing the limits even more. To say cher has never been controversial just shows you have no idea of the history of cher's career.

 

To answer the question, cher toned it down as she aged and become much more safe and chose to age somewhat more gracefully than madonna, at least in the eyes of the public. Cher has also always been a more beloved figure. Madonna is a massive figure with monumental success who refused to tone it down or not be cringy as she aged. Madonna has also always been somewhat of a butt head with a pissy attitude which many people do not like, so they attempt to target her and tear her down.

Cher stands alone as an almanac of Pop Culture in a unique way. Nobody rivals her in that regard or position.

 

She was releasing records in the 1960's, she is releasing records in the 2020's. She has met just about every Pop-star who ever lived.

 

Many years ago someone once said, if there is ever a nuclear war, the only life left afterwards would be cockroaches and Cher. 
 

Her former contemporaries are your great grandmother's idols.
