base talk Tired of MPGs mostly singing about love & relationship dynamics

Anyone else getting to that point? I am TIRED of MPGs singing mostly about love, breakups, toxic relationships, sex with a partner etc...it's getting STALE AF after 20+ years of this. During the 90s MPGs were way more expansive with their topics. Sometimes u could find a solid balance of like 50% love and 50% other stuff like world stuff, spirituality etc...

 

Indie popgirls or smaller popgirls do have more of a varied discography in terms of topics but the MPGs literally mostly only talk about this with the occasional one off song here and there. 

 

Anyone else feel that way at all?

That's why they're MPG, general public don't actually want to hear deep stuffs, love and sex are the easiest topics to sell to them, that's why they're popular. It's not that they/industry can't write them, but they generally don't sell as well nowadays. Also MPG nowadays are more self oriented than past generations, they don't really care other stuffs but themselves mostly, and people find writing about artists themselves interesting because it gives them parasocial relationship with artists.

she always has tracks that break out of that mould.

I do think it's kinda funny todays pop artists can really say anything and get away with it because it's over a catchy melody, easily digestible production & most of their fans won't even notice unless it's pointed out they still aren't interesting conceptually.

 

On the other hand, in todays day you can literally find someone who is, so does it really matter?

If anything the most recent breakouts (Charli, Sabrina, Chappell, and Tyla) are very varied with the topics in their music which plays into why they're so successful now as opposed to the manufactured pop model that is getting too predictable now. It also explains why country music in general is getting a huge resurgence because they just sing about anything. I'm excited to see where pop leads to for the remainder of this decade.

That's why Kesha is usually the popgirl with more interesting songs imo. She has songs about a former bestie stealing her car, partying at a rich dude's house, old men at the club hitting on her, her own car, being tired of living with humans and waiting for a spaceship to send her to another place, how much she likes her cat, how happiness is the most important thing for her to have, and even has a song about ditching the popgirl lifestyle and live on an island naked and growing potatoes

Beyoncé albums tends to have good number of  songs not about love and sex; Texas Hold'Em, Break my soul, 16 carriages, American Requiem, I'm that girl, Heated , Move,America Has a problem, etc . A good number really and all quality songs

Songs about marginalization and race (Outside, Looking In, There's Got to Be a Way, Can't Take That Away), death (The Wind, One Sweet Day, Bye Bye, Sunflowers for Alfred Roy), faith and empowerment (Anytime You Need a Friend, Make It Happen, Fly Like a Bird, My Saving Grace, Through the Rain, I Am Free), childhood trauma (Petals, Close My Eyes, Side Effects, Reflections), holidays (duh), disses (Clown, Obsessed), celebration (It's Like That), suicide (Twister).

If you want radio pop songs about topics that don't revolve around love and relationships, you have to go way back to the 80s when mainstream artists were encouraged to still be activists and humanitarians. Also a time where people still read books so all the songwriters of the era had better vocabulary.

 

There were still some residuals of this into the 90s and early 00s but it's been pretty much gone in the last 15+ years.

I don't think there's anything wrong with it. But maybe it's because I love R&B music as well, which is centered around love, seduction, and relationship dynamics as well.

 

I do find refreshing Pop artists like Rina Sawayama, you won't find a single love song in her albums, I'm not exaggerating.

95% of pop music has always been about love, sex, partying etc. Sure there are the occasional pop albums that are about spirituality, identity, mental health etc but they're few and far between.

especially for us gays who are less likely to have been in a relationship than our straight counterparts. theres just so much more going on in life that pop artists can explore other than love. besides, what new can possibly be said about love that hasnt been said in the past 70 years of mainstream music? its time to come up with something else

Love & relationships is something everyone has experienced about: they connect with people with these narratives. 

I don't mind about this because I like breakup songs for example. There are many artists who speaks about different topics and love in different ways. For example I appreaciate Secret Love Song from Little Mix or Sorry Mom (Kelsea Ballerini) both about love but not the typical love song.
