aadrl1 Posted January 5 Posted January 5 (edited) As we all know, Jesy Nelson's solo career was pretty much over upon her debut. Everyone was canceling her for blackfishing. Her rapid rise and fall were largely defined by backlash and controversy. To a point that, If you Google 'Blackfishing,' the first result is an image of Jesy Nelson - featured in a BBC article. Similarly, Ariana Grande, a completely white Italian-American celebrity, has always been known for blackfishing to date—if not a more prominent case than Jesy's, from her skin tanning, music style, sound, to the most recent viral video of her alt personality/ urban accent that's been circulating on social media. However, these controversies haven't caused much of a stir in her career. For example, after the recent viral videos, half of the users praised her as 'talented' for owning and switching inbetween stereotyped black persona and urban accent. What do you think accounts for the different reactions between Jesy's blackfishing and Ariana's? Does commercial success shift people's perspectives on the same issue? KFC Posted January 5 Posted January 5 If Ariana had been hit with a blackfishing scandal upon the release of her DEBUT single her career probably would have been over too. As it is, she's been succesful enough historically to be able to ride out controversies of this variety 4
Dante Silva Posted January 5 Posted January 5 You make a good point but it seems the U.S. doesn't see this as any kind of issue and the U.K. does. 3 1
right where you left me Posted January 5 Posted January 5 Ariana didn't participate with Nicki Minaj in the dragging of a black member of her former group. Also Ariana is attractive and makes good music, something Jesy doesn't have. This doesn't excuse Ariana's actions but it's just tea But if you look at Twitter, Tik Tok and Instagram these days, Ariana is getting dragged more than she ever was for her racefishing
Angelo Posted January 5 Posted January 5 She was marketed as the next Mariah Carey during her debut, similar to Leona Lewis. 1
sugarysunflower Posted January 5 Posted January 5 Ariana has exceptional talent especially in the calibre of today's age 1 1 2 1
Popular Post St. Charles Posted January 5 Popular Post Posted January 5 I honestly think people decide pretty quickly whether or not they like someone based on a number of factors. When people get outraged or call someone out, it's usually that they finally feel like they have a reason to justify why they don't like them. View things in this context and most of the confusion around who gets canceled / who doesn't will begin to make sense. 25 1
PrettyHurts Posted January 5 Posted January 5 Because she was famous, successful and proved her talent before the "black fishing" talk. Plus her music was good 10
Popular Post Eternium Posted January 5 Popular Post Posted January 5 Jesy spent her time feuding with and dragging her black bandmates, which gives off racist vibes. It put her in the same light as Camila Cabello. Ariana had black influences, but she never felt racist because she was always paying her dues. Didn't she have Patti LaBelle perform at one of her birthday parties and develop a strong relationship with her? And she's constantly giving a platform to black artists in incredibly positive ways. If Jesy had spent more time building up black artists instead of trying to tear them down (including the ones that were closest to her), she'd probably have way better reception. 15 11 4
ericcartman Posted January 5 Posted January 5 (edited) Honestly? I don't know. It's something I've always wondered. I like her so I'm not complaining and would hate to make it a thing, but I will never understand how she gets away with it. Maybe most people still think she's mixed? aadrl1 Posted January 5 Author Posted January 5 (edited) "Because of Music" is really just another expression of Double Standard, which summarizes this issue What's worse than celebrity "Blackfishing"... is the normalization of "Blackfishing" due to fan support, as this thread has shown Edited January 5 by aadrl1 2 1
ICLDXU4HS Posted January 5 Posted January 5 Grande is going down eventually... and I hope I'm there. 1 3 11 9
prettyinpink940 Posted January 5 Posted January 5 Because Ariana looked like this And Jesy like this 1
wildsidenormani Posted January 5 Posted January 5 Because she never 'blackfished'. It never gave black

gr33dy4Ari Posted January 5 Posted January 5 Such a stupid allegation. Ariana may have been influenced by black artists, but she never tried to appear "black". Dont get me started with her tanning bec ALL OF YOUR WHITE FAVES tanned at one point in their career. Just freaking dont. People never confused her for being black—hispanic, yes, but I dont think there was ever a time that someone thought she was a black woman or was trying to be. STOP ✋🏻 And if we're talking about backlash, she's getting dragged on X and Tiktok on a daily basis so that's just false. The reason why she's still INCREDIBLY successful is bec of her talent and she never tried to bring anyone down. 8 1 2
hoax Posted January 5 Posted January 5 (edited) Ariana had two very successful albums under her belt before anything that could even reasonably be considered approaching... visual appropriation, and Jesy was promoting her debut single, so there was just no reason to keep her around Edited January 5 by wastedpotential 2
