The top 3 songs of 2024 were more acclaimed than #1 songs of the last 3 years. Why?

According to AOTY's year-end aggregator, the top 3 songs of last year were more acclaimed than the #1 songs of 2023, 2022 and 2021. What went right in 2024?

Less competition maybe, these do stand out amongst everything that was released last year

Didn't even know they had song rankings

People are forgetting just how much the pandemic affected music output not just in 2020 but the following two years as well.

What's the correlation?

As explained to you before, you can't compare these ratings across years the way you are trying to do it...:ace:

A&W best song here by far, so rankings void

More publications and magazines making lists each year, plus there's a consensus of praise amongst critics for those 3 songs

The crazy part is AOTY omits a lot of lists, so this isn't even that definitive but yeah, I think music journalism has boomed this year and might continue to get bigger. There's new publications, more critics and the Uproxx Critics Poll (a successor to Pazz & Jop) is gonna get the most submissions ever this year.

Where can I find the year-end aggregator for songs? (2024 specifically)

Yes, that's why I prefer Acclaimed Music. They gather reviews from all around the world, which unfortunately makes their list take longer to be posted

Well, 2024 was the best and most exciting year of this decade so far musically :clap3: so I'm not really surprised.

Yeah, and the guy that usually makes the spreadsheet is busy rn so it'll be a while before we have a wider picture. One discrepancy is boygenius being #1 on AOTY's aggregate but Javelin being #1 on AM.

well the three songs from this year are all classics, the ones from the last three years are all terrible especially that meme song A&W

I noticed it's usually discrepant, but that might happen because of how many more sources they base their lists from. For instance, Lorde's "Green Light" was #5 on AOTY's aggregate, but #1 on AM's.
