According to AlbumOfTheYear

Do you agree? Do these four have the most mediocre albums among the pop girls?

I mean... Yea it makes perfect sense tbh. Pop girls were harshly reviewed in the late 2000's and didn't get much acclaim until the mid 2010's? around then. Rihanna has always been known to be a singles heavy artist. Katy's only album worthy of acclaim is TD imo. Gaga's discography is very hit or miss & Nicki repackages and releases the same just OK album every few years.

That's what happens when you don't play it safe. Unlike the top 3 who made the same album 2 or 3 times in a row.

If this is Metacritic scores, Gaga's is only low cos they count the remix albums for some reason

Her main LG1-6 albums average her out in the mid-70s I'm pretty sure?

Album wise rih is weak but her singles are way stronger than the other bottom 4.

gaga is a very polarizing artist

rihanna - her not "writing" most of her music is the reason

lol her singles are way stronger than anyone on the list, Anti is one of the most acclamied and revered albums of the past decade. Rated R and GGGB also have 75+ on metacritic when poptimism was not a thing, i think she's good.

Olivia, Billie, and Dua haven't released enough music to really deserve their spots. A miss or two will drop them down. They also benefit from popism. Charli also is a bit lopsided because of her mainstream breakthrough this year. Taylor and Beyonce being so high despite having such huge discographies and debuting before the rise of popism (which they heralded) is really really impressive.

The girls you mentioned would benefit from their early work getting popism, but I also think it's not that surprising. As a Monster, Gaga's output is very uneven. Very high highs, but ARTPOP and Joanne are not good records even though I have a special place in my heart for the former. Rihanna has always been a singles artist (though I love ANTI), and Katy and Nicki just put out a lot of bad music.

It comes down to when all these girls peaked, their music was seen as trashy and disposable bops at the time but the recurrent streams on certain projects proved that wrong. They are our generation's classics. :cm:

I feel like these should be weighted against the average pop album score for that year

Rihanna didn't need to be mentioned. The ones at the "bottom" aren't that far from the middle of the pack. Katy is the standout here being red and far below the other 3 you named and should have headlined this thread.

Lana is too low I never understood how critics can give Lana with as straight face low scores on her music and criticizing her lyrics when Billie basically followed Lana archetype of sad girl music the same way as well.  Don't me wrong I like Billie but it's very clear favoritism out here!

I truly believe Lana should easily be above Taylor in this list.

Katy being dead last is accurate.

cause they released their best music before poptimism kicked off? really not difficult to understand. back then 78 for the fame monster was the peak of critical acclaim female pop star could get.

Rihanna has the best of both worlds, though.  Most albums are forgotten no matter what, but her singles from her non-acclaimed albums are forever iconic and stood the test of time.

Meanwhile, Anti was critically acclaimed and has spent 450+ weeks on the BB200 so far, making it more acclaimed and easily more iconic than almost all (if not all) of the albums by the other girlies.

gaga has a better discog than the other 3 by far

It's no surprise Gaga and Rih have lower scores tbh. It's bound to happen when you have the most diverse discographies among this group.

Katy and Nicki definitely release bad music, though. :rip:

As a Monster, I also agree her output was inconsistent through the middle half of her career but it's gotten much better and cleaner in recent years. Since 2018 she's released ASIB, Chromatica, Die With a Smile, Disease, etc. all of which are arguably strong material that easily stands next to her early material and definitely beats her weaker material 2013-2017. Even Sweet Sounds of Heaven and Hold My Hand were pretty good and well-received. I expect her to (hopefully) continue leaning more toward acclaimed moving forward.

If we only listened to what the "critics" think is the best, we would never have our good old fun pop.
