Feanor Posted Wednesday at 11:33 PM Posted Wednesday at 11:33 PM No music video, no tour montage video, no animated video, no visualizer, no lyric video, not even the live performance from the tour which is already filmed and could've just been uploaded… beyond its audio "video", Taylor Swift's "Cruel Summer" has no visual whatsoever on YouTube, despite being one of her biggest hits. Taylor has made music videos for almost all of her other singles this decade and has released cute little lyric videos for pretty much every song she has put out over the past few years, including even TV tracks, yet "Cruel Summer" didn't get anything. Why do you think that is?
HarajukuPrincess Posted Wednesday at 11:36 PM Posted Wednesday at 11:36 PM It's rare that a song can smash so hard without any of that so it really is quite impressive. 4 1
Tusk Posted Wednesday at 11:37 PM Posted Wednesday at 11:37 PM Why spend money on promo when the song was already a smash?
tost1 Posted Wednesday at 11:40 PM Posted Wednesday at 11:40 PM The budget went to the streaming farms and paid audience 1 1 5
MidnightsAtPeace Posted Wednesday at 11:42 PM Posted Wednesday at 11:42 PM She didn't have to do anything but it would've been so nice for Cruel Summer to have a video. I don't like the fact that two of her most recent #1 hits (one being one of her biggest hits ever) don't have visuals attached to them because music videos truly mean so much to me and many more. 6 6
sugarysunflower Posted Wednesday at 11:52 PM Posted Wednesday at 11:52 PM The video budget was likely allocated to radio probably. Plus radio gives more points to the Hot100 than YouTube. Wasn't CS the number one song on pop radio for 10 weeks? 1
Cry Posted Thursday at 12:07 AM Posted Thursday at 12:07 AM Why would she if the song already became viral and took off? Would have been a waste of money, for most part.
Taylor fanboy Posted Thursday at 12:16 AM Posted Thursday at 12:16 AM She needs to recoup the losses incurred from ME! to The Man somehow. Rumor has it she's still in debt. 9
fememeist Posted Thursday at 12:34 AM Posted Thursday at 12:34 AM (edited) She wanted to mimick a Cowboy Carter level of promo for this Edited Thursday at 12:34 AM by fememeist 1
Park Jinyoung Posted Thursday at 12:34 AM Posted Thursday at 12:34 AM for the bragging rights "#1 with no mv" etc 1
AvadaKedavra Posted Thursday at 12:42 AM Posted Thursday at 12:42 AM (edited) Cause is a song about Joe and she's done with him and she was also really busy. Edited Thursday at 12:43 AM by AvadaKedavra 2
Cruel Summer Posted Thursday at 12:52 AM Posted Thursday at 12:52 AM I think she sort of knew it wouldn't really do anything. Cruel Summer happened almost entirely without her trying to make it happen, apparently derailing actual plans she had for a Speak Now TV single, and became a once-in-a-career hit all on its own, with the fans starting it and the label eventually capitulating by sending it to radio. It was essentially the purest crystallization of Taylormania and it was out of her hands entirely. If she tried to make more of it, nothing would have really been different, so it would have been a sunk cost for no reason. I think it was smart to let it run its course mostly naturally, the odd live version or remix notwithstanding. 4 2
Oktober Knight Posted Thursday at 01:06 AM Posted Thursday at 01:06 AM Maybe she wanted to give other pop girls a break for 20 seconds? Wait, who am I kidding... 2
umich Posted Thursday at 01:43 AM Posted Thursday at 01:43 AM No sense in wasting money on promo when the Eras Tour did all the work for it to smash.
Peak Now Posted Thursday at 01:53 AM Posted Thursday at 01:53 AM She's bitter that the fans were right and displayed taste in her own music (which she lacks) 2 12
ArtDeco Posted Thursday at 02:00 AM Posted Thursday at 02:00 AM She put all her coin into the "You Need to Calm Down" video and queer baited
JoeAg Posted Thursday at 03:36 AM Posted Thursday at 03:36 AM it was her Rock n Roll Suicide moment (released as a single well into another album cycle after several other eras had already passed, didn't need a music video to be a success, fed into her contemporaneous success in the zeitgeist…) Spoiler I'm kind of joking but also kind of not because it's a similar type of situation. they did release singles back in the day after the era of the original album the single appeared on had already faded so there are similarities if you think about it 2
