I always thought that, and it's not about the clothes or the aesthetics that she adopts with every era because every artist does that, but it's more about the fake accent, fake attitude & personality or the fake tan she had on during her R&B days. Everything about her is fake from her persona, appearance, and down to the way she sings. Her whole singing career, especially in the early days, was mimicking Mariah Carey. I still don't know what is her true singing voice. Is it the one on Higher or Dig Deeper or whatever it is called? Then she went from mimicking Mariah to  being Victoria Monet's Frankenstein. Nothing about her is original .

Her two most r&b albums, with zero pop producers on them, were Yours Truly and Positions and she didn't have the strong tan on either of them. Ariana's music has always been leaning towards r&b and she's been mentioning r&b artists as inspirations from the Victorious days, especially India.Arie. A lot of this is weird projection and revisionism. She literally got the career she has by connecting with fans on early social media during Victorious. 

 

Like it's one thing to kiki and cackle over some of the things - some of them even said affectionately by fans, some a bit of prickling she deserves for being clumsy at how she's handled criticisms at times - but her like.. actual speaking voice is actually largely unchanged and has been same throughout her career.   

 

The only change has largely been via the vocal training to speak like Glinda. Her manner of speech has largely been defined as sardonic with dry, sarcastic humor. 

 

 

Even her love for musicals is a through-line throughout her career. 7 Rings samples a Rodgers and Hammerstein musical number.

The past holds plenty to critique and there have been voices giving criticisms that were actionable and insightful, but trying to retcon some weird retelling of her entire career is.. silly.

The fact that the version of Positions we got is still much more restrained from how deep into r&b she wanted to go and that the scrapped demos from the album reveal just how deeply into the sound she was working, with her demos eventually being passed onto artists like Chris Brown, etc.

 

Mocking her for the tan is one thing and often deserved because she tried to course-correct discreetly, but erasing from history that she essentially went on to make her most r&b album after trying to course-correct and *didn't* drop the genre feels like dishonest criticism when people make it.

 

It also being completely written with the same set of collaborators she worked with on: Yours Truly, My Everything, Dangerous Woman, Sweetener, *AND* Thank U, Next. The *insane* **** people feel comfortable claiming about her and Victoria yet none of these same people were giving Victoria Monet her flowers, let alone not even a stream, back in the days of 2016, while Ariana was serving as the Official Victoria Monet Street Team.
