I'm sorry but I don't see the big deal here. Teenagers and young adults are impressionable and will often mimic the lingo of those who are around them and those they idolize in pop culture.

People change the way they talk many times during a lifetime, depending on who they sourround themselves with, the place they live, what they perceive as cool... language is a way to belong to something. 

Not saying this wasn't cringe or unproblematic, but give her a break. She's a young woman still growing and learning and everyone changes, folks. Having been under the public eye for years just makes it easier to see.

I don't even think she was necessarily trying to be black back then she was just hanging around alot of gays and drag queens so she started to speak/act like them.

However most drag/gay lingo is bastardized from black women so she was indirectly mimicking a black woman.

I recently watched her Actors on Actors interview with Paul Mescal, and she straight-up had a Trans-Atlantic accent sometimes, like she was channeling Audrey Hepburn or something.

 

I wouldn't say Ariana is a bigot, but I do find it questionable that she was darkening her skin and using AAVE during her R&B era, but is now acting like an Old Hollywood actress to secure an Oscar nomination.
