dumbsparce Posted Monday at 01:06 AM Posted Monday at 01:06 AM (edited) I love how she didn't hold back with the "girl was a dude" line. There's a fine line between potentially exposing someone and telling your raw honest story and she did it perfectly with this song. Edited Monday at 01:07 AM by dumbsparce

That's why I think Cardi is the last female to rise and eventually smash like this in recent times. nn lets not discredit Doja on a genre technicality with the way they share a similar trajectory with their breakout hits though. What It Is could've been Doechii's Say So moment had they pushed for it as a solo track from the jump, and you could even argue that they were trying to emulate the Dojaprint with her making music engineered to take off on TikTok. I see Doja's rise from Mooo! with Tia Tamera and Juicy right before Say So being sorta comparable to Alter Ego and Nissan Altima coming right before Denial. A Rap track with an upcoming female rapper followed by the lead single for the project, and then the big hit coming a few months after the project has been out. Sounds familiar right? Either way, the similarities are almost uncanny and Doechii defo fits more into the Doja genre-hopping world rather than Cardi's predominantly hip-hop orientated sound & image. It also helps that Doechii is also a singer and is pushing for Pop radio visibility (Katy collab etc.) unlike Cardi who was focused on presenting herself as a rapper only before crossing over, so I feel like that's where the apt comparisons spawn from, regardless of what type of song really took off for them. Not to say I don't see where you're coming from, but I also don't want to endorse the idea that Doja can't ever get her flowers for being a rapper because she made the wise decision to market herself to a pop audience to secure her position. 2
