Did Demi fumble her comeback in 2020?

Demi Lovato had all the hype back in 2020 to return to new career heights... and then she released 'I Love Me' as a lead single (scrapped afterward) for her forthcoming album.

 

Do you think she needed something stronger to release and capitalize on her career? 

 

While the topic she explores in the lyrics could have worked for a comeback, in my opinion, the production and the melody of the song are quite weak for a lead single. Which is really baffling, because she had great and anthemic songs that she usually released for lead singles before (Skyscraper, Heart Attack, Cool for the Summer, Sorry Not Sorry). Even more baffling that this happened under Scooter Braun managing her.

Honestly "Anyone" killed her comeback hype, no one was checking for whatever came next.

her coming back to the grammys with "anyone" was such a bad choice then she goes and releases an anne marie reject at her grown age….scooter was really just saying yes to anything.

Of course. The instrumental is a mess, like, the instumental of the chorus comes out of no where, then it goes back to the verses instrumental, and then it goes back go the anthemic sound again :rip:

 

Also, she waited too long. Anyone was a cute moment, but witg such repetitive chorus it wasn't bound to go anywhere, so she needed to release the lead single right after... and yet she took until March to do it. Scooter really despised her.

 

And let's not talk about her spending the rest of the year wasting the hype that was left for her, just for being too busy hanging out with Selena's stalker

Shes been telling the same "woe is me" / recovery story since Skyscraper. How many comeback singles she's had with the same narrative is exhausting :deadbanana2:

Yes, but she was doing what she wanted.. She should have just done DWTD as her lead with a video and the Grammy performance. But she wanted to do Anyone ever since she was in the hospital, so she went with it. 
 

most of her career choices are frustrating for the old me that was obsessed with charts and wanted success for her… like wdym there is no video for 29 and absolutely no album promo after week 1 or Spotify playlisting for HF..

 

but she is doing what she wants which is playing with her dogs and thirsting over her man. She clearly doesn't want to be "famous" anymore and only does it to maintain the lifestyle she has.. it's sad as a Stan but I'm happy she's happy and Idc about charts and certifications either  anymore, so who cares.. I'm sure she spends zero time thinking if she "fumbled" her post-overdose comeback while planning her dream wedding.

A better song would have definitely helped but maybe her time was simply up? Especially after her OD I feel like the gp shifted their attention toward the person instead of the popstar, in the sense that they were pitying her/worried for her more than they were rooting for her to make a comeback.

For someone who's struggled with the pressures of being famous and finding her sound in a saturated market, hiring Scooter Braun was actually the worst decision she could have made. He was never going to seriously invest in taking her career to the next level and what resulted was more uninspired music designed to exploit her traumas for capital. Holy **** was much better.

That's just her brand. Just like the brand of others is to keep releasing singles about 'whoa I'm so different and crazy!'

Very fumbled, but she clearly was still not in a good place, so going back full force into the industry would've probably done her more harm than good. I Love Me (or anything really) becoming a hit would've NOT been ideal at the time.
 

DWTD may have flopped the year after but it had her best lyricism out of any of her other albums, and she vented all the **** she was feeling.

Maybe, just maybe, because most of her music is self reflective and as an addict she is prone to relapse, get clean, rinse and repeat for the rest of her life? :psyduck: She's not catering for a new narrative, she's just being real of what's going on.

short answer, yes. 

 

long answer, i think her fumbling the comeback (and the DWTDTAOSO roll out as a whole) was actually good for her? it's very clear from Holy **** and Child Star that she no longer wants anything to do with being a pop super star, and as a fan, it's clear she is NOT fit for that lifestyle either. now she can just release passion projects for her core fans when it makes her happy and still experience moderate success.

Yeah, but like many have said, it's probably what was best for her health. It does sadden me to remember the momentum she had during the Tell Me You Love Me/collabs 2017-2018 era, and how that couldn't keep going (for obvious reasons). She still released 2 incredible albums afterwards, but she deserves so much more success.

I liked Confident and TMYLM pretty much, loved Solo with Clean Bandit, ILM was mid, DWTD pretty meh but i completely lost connection with her stuff with the release of holy ****. 

The farther she went from pop the less interested I was i guess. 

It's a pity she ran away from pop cause cause I loved her pop catalogue.

it wasn't her best but not long afterwards she dropped  HOLY **** which was probably one of the best albums she's ever dropped, kinda do wish she dropped it in 2020 but I feel the timing when she dropped it worked

either way she won with that, only problem is charts don't really sell rock :dancehall:

the Travis Barker remix is the only version of I Love Me i use (and i love it)

I think Anyone was a great moment at the Grammys, while I Love Me was pretty bad.

 

She had a lot of promo and coverage when her album (Dancing With The Devil) dropped and honestly I've always thought there was a solid 12 tracks album in there, but as it always happens in the past few years artists release bloated albums full of sales for higher streams.

I think so too. Some people aren't cut for this life, she's been through so much during her peak she's probably doing much better now.

 

I don't understand how some can say she was never big to begin with when she was in one of Disney's biggest movies and was touring the world at 17. She worked hard and was still a solid B-lister for most of her career.
