Even if nobody bought the album it would still be praised. Thats why it isnt overrated. I never said It was overrated or not critically acclaimed upon release? I'm saying it's impact is why it's even more praised 6 months later.
Bartender Posted 3 hours ago Posted 3 hours ago I'm sorry but I can't take the argument of this album being overrated or forced, the marketing of this album is kind of a double edged sword where it propelled it to new heights of exposure but where does the force come in? I remember the reception from the fanbase when it first leaked released and everyone declaring it her best work yet and how Apple was kind of the weakest track (which turned out to be one of the biggest hits from the album!). I'm honestly glad that her newfound popularity didn't affect the year end critical acclaim because if we're being honest no other album deserved it as much as this one did. So no, the overrated discussion only relates to the *now* iconic cover still being repurposed to this day. 1 4

JoeAg Posted 3 hours ago Posted 3 hours ago I love Brat but I have to be completely honest in that I haven't listened to it front to back since like… September it's in my top 10 of the year, but it's nowhere near #1 for me lol

People dismissing his critiques in broad strokes need to pay attention to all of his points, per usual. For example, he makes the point that Eusexua's singles should have at least the same amount of hype, which is true. Good album and great branding, but anyone acting like it's this groundbreaking club album would get laughed at by people actually tapped into the dance/techno scene. The hype is over the top, but that doesn't mean the music is bad. I feel like BRAT is kind of the modern version of Madonna's Music where a big glam pop star takes underground influences that are happening in the dance/techno scene (whatever variant of hyperpop and late 90s French house respectively) and puts a lick of pop perfection over it and slays and even the haters begrudgingly agree she slayed

With such hit classics like Hot Stuff, Dim All The Lights and the titular track? Everything Donna released in 1979 went top 5 on the H100. Charli was lucky to get a couple of top 10s this year lol

My comment was also in reference to the production sounds from the tech used on key sections of each album and you can literally hear the zeitgeist from the separate time periods in which each album was created. Additionally, anyone who has ever stood in a DJ booth and witnessed a collective crowd reaction to key songs from "Brat" can attest to the visceral impact they have on an audience in terms of frisson. 1
