Was 2013-2014 the best year for R&B?

Atmospheric, chill & timeless sounding R&B. Couldn't get better than Tinashe, FKA, Sevyn, Doja, Banks, Beys best album aka ST etc.

Masterpiece after masterpiece. The production and melodies cannot be compared.

Very valid points but also 2016 had A Seat at the Table, Blonde, Nightride, HEAVN, Anti, Lemonade, Oh No, Malibu, Freetown Sound and more

No, 2010s in general wasn't very good for the genre to me.

We're still recovering now.

10 years before 2014 we had afrodisiac, confessions, goodies, destiny fulfilled, jill scott, gaelle and damita joe all in the same year and that still isn't the best year for r&b….sadly nothing in the 2010's stands a chance

also the snubbing of jhene's best album "souled out" is crazy

2014  at least was in fact one of the worst in that decade if you compare it to years that came after, 2015-2017.

Some of those albums you mention are very good (especially Sevyn's EP) but yea, 2014 is far from being the best year for R&B

Are you serious? R&B wasn't mainstream since Destiny's Child.

:toofunny2: it's clear they weren't referring to the charts, but quality.

There are many R&B albums and songs of the '10s that I appreciate but like others have said OP, the genre has seen better quality years than 2013-14, especially in terms of melodies as you so noted.

I think it should be noted though that this was the period when R&B started adapting for this current generation. It hadn't had a mainstream makeover in well over a decade. Of course, that comes with some caveats and perceived downsides but had it not continued to adapt in spite of the charts, the genre would've become completely niche.

"Follow Me" and "Lowkey" >>>>>

That's a good era for R&B, but the 80s, 90s and 00s exist so I beg to differ :coffee:

I feel like the 2013-2014 era of R&B - every song just had immaculate vibes/atmosphere almost aquatic. That's why I enjoyed it so much
