The Taliban had been making advances as far back as 2019. It's why Trump negotiated with them to begin with. A Taliban win was expected, it was just faster than normal. On the other hand, two weeks ago everyone more or less agreed Assad had "won" the civil war. Even yesterday, I thought they'd put up a fight in Damascus at least.
